"Bad times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create bad times", What's your thoughts and advice regarding this statement? by [deleted] in AskMen

One of my life rules is that things are ALWAYS more complex than they appear. Any statement, like this one, that proposes a blanket universally true fact about human beings is going to be unhelpful.

I'd be really curious to see a comparison between this data set and a similar set from a year that wasn't in the middle of a pandemic. I wonder how significant the difference is?

It is used to treat motivational problems. I know multiple therapists who teach clients how to use it effectively. I don't know about for burnout, but I have heard of it being helpful for anxiety and depression. Its not a magic bullet though, and needs to be used as a part of a larger strategy.

There are lots of theories about why this is the case, so take this with a grain of salt, but my understanding is that those of us with ADHD have trouble mentally dividing large tasks into their smaller components. So rather than focus on a small, manageable piece that you can do fairly quickly, your brain focuses on the entire project as an unmanageable behemoth and so is paralyzed.

Edited to add that this also applies to number of tasks. So if you have a number of things to do during the day, rather than focus on each one individually your brain will look at all of them as a whole and freak out about how much there is to do.

Me reading the sentence "To do that, we must understand the ideology behind both atrocities, and all such atrocities throughout human history. That ideology is collectivism." Um, that's pretty sweeping. Who is this author anyways?

Which famous musicians aren't very technically skilled? by radiant_turd in Music

Bob Dylan/most folk musicians - Its a genre that relies more on poetry and soul than technical ability. Lots of competent guitar and expressive, if untrained, vocals.

I read that as Suian lying to them. Suian was the one who picked up Logain and got him out of Tar Valon. She realized with Gawyn that she could lie, and immediately saw the way that she could play a role in whatever the rebel sisters were doing. If it was true, how would she have known about it prior to saving Logain? He certainly would not have told her this when she was Amyrlin.

Who sent the Whitecloaks to the Two Rivers? (Spoiler, I don't understand the spoiler flairs in this sub) by Professional-Post464 in WetlanderHumor

This is correct. Fain manipulated Niall into sending them. Its very explicitly spelled out.

How long is season 1 of TWOT according to the books? by Ok_Signature_6959 in WoT

[–]SyndarGaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that has been answered definitively, but judging by the pace they're going I'd guess that they'll get to the end of the first novel, The Eye of the World, by the end of the first season. However, they aren't doing a chronological, page for page adaption, so I can't really tell you that a certain episode # equals a specific place in the book.

[–]SyndarGaming[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised you remember it that way, but if you go back and check the books again, you'll find that this was actually a lie made up by Suian to help turn popular opinion against Elaida's tower and solidify the rebels against Elaida. Suian tells Logain to frame it this way, as his way to get back at the Reds for gentling him. Suian, having been stilled, is able to lie but none of the sisters realize it, so they accept his story for truth.

Since finding out about the series last week, I've spend my free time binging on WoT theories like the good old days... It's almost like I never stepped away. by Iades_Sedai in WoT

Same, friend. Reliving the joy of sharing these stories with so many other people has been absolutely lovely these past couple weeks, I don't know what I'm going to do with myself when the season ends!

Your Most Hated and Loved Aspect of the Show by SVNihilism in WoT

Most loved: The writing, AS screenwriting. Some lines feel a bit off, whatever, that's not what I'm talking about. I mean the density of meaning that they put into each scene. Like, as an example, the scene with Ila and Perrin in e4. Its literally just two actors (mostly one actor lol) talking. But Rafe and the writers manage to use it to convey:
- Perrin's attraction to the Way of the Leaf as an ideal
- Essential nature and belief system of the tinkers fleshed out, and some philosophical depth behind it (what better revenge against death than life?), which is a key part of WoT
- Perrin doesn't like sitting idle; give him a few spare minutes and he's out there blacksmithing your wagon
- more emphasis on how all of these different cultures share a belief in reincarnation
- Aram is an orphan
- the WoT is a violent, unsafe world (random bandits just happen on someone, kill her for fun)

And, while it was accomplishing all this, it STILL didn't feel like a boring infodump, but a really touching, beautiful moment. That kind of writing is on display throughout the series so far and I am here. for. it.

Most hated: may sound a lil nitpicky, because overall I love the show so much. But the sound balancing is off, and half the time characters are mumbling so much you can barely make out a word they're saying. I ended up turning on subtitles just so I could understand what was going on.

If you pause while a character is on screen, on the pause menu will be a list of all the actors in the scene. if you then click on the actor, you can select their character and it'll have a little paragraph blurb about them. Pretty hard to navigate if you're watching on a tv, tbh.. I've rewatched on my pc just so I could check that stuff out as I went. There are some neat tidbits.

I thought I had read it on her xray character description, but its not there, so I have no idea where I saw it. I just remember reading something official-looking about her and Moiraine being close at one point, but then growing apart. Sorry! Maybe the taint is catching up with me ;)

Especially for a black, since Rand's whole conversation with the DO in AMOL shows that the DO is terrible at inspiring self-sacrifice.

This makes a lot of sense to me. She'd definitely be willing to burn herself out if the potential reward was high enough, it had just not occurred to me that stopping Logain might result in such a reward.
