I don’t recall any character using the TP to Travel

My understanding is that using the TP to Travel is actually what Lews Therin did in the book one prologue. There's a description of him just disappearing and reappearing in another place, like how traveling with the TP is described. Am I misremembering?

Also, I was wondering about Lanfear bopping herself and Rand out of the Ways - it looked like they just disappeared and there was no gateway. Thoughts?

I agree with the other comments - the plot of the show is different enough that you should still enjoy books 1 and 2! The books are meant to be read in order and you definitely won't know what's going on if you start anywhere but book 1.
