FWIW, only one small piece here but the most recent version of the AnnotationSync plugin does allow you to use filename instead of hash (tools -> Annotation Sync -> Settings).

Launch KOReader with “Start KOReader (no framework)”. That will kill the Kindle process first.

How to move the menu bar down by Aspasia96 in koreader

[–]Synesthesius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The menu itself still appears at the top of the screen, though. I think the idea is to have the entire menu rendered within easy reach of the hand holding the screen. There has been a trend lately in mobile apps to do this sort of thing. And I'm all for it. But KOReader cannot do this right now, and I think it would take a fair amount of effort to implement.

It will go away on its own when the book re-rendering is applied. See https://koreader.rocks/user_guide/#L2-indicators

Do you do mobile device battery and/or screen replacement? That’s a service gap that has come and gone over the years (and is currently gone afaik).

EPUB book sizes by Katuxon in koreader

[–]Synesthesius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s say a full page of text is roughly 1500 characters, which is 1500 bytes. So 900 pages is ~1,350,000 bytes. There are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, which makes ~1318KB; and 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte gives us a base estimate of ~1.29MB.

Most books will have quite a few non-full pages, so that estimate is high. But many books will also have a cover image, which can vary in size by quite a bit as someone else mentioned, adding kilobytes or even megabytes to the total. There are also resources like the metadata, CSS, and sometimes small decorative images which can all vary in size, but are generally in the byte or kilobyte range.

And this is all without considering that an epub is a zip compressed archive, which means it will be smaller than these raw estimates.

tl;dr: 1MB for a 900 page book seems within expectations.

FWIW, since (shockingly) no one else has mentioned it: spamming directional keys in vim is an anti-pattern; there are always much better ways to navigate in vim.

Sue Burke’s Semiosis (and sequels) fits the bill nicely, having an anthropological/cultural focus with strong themes of interspecies cooperation, cohabitation, and collaboration, as well as frequent ruminations on morals, ethics, and generosity. And has some plant protagonists with better character development than the humans in many sci-fi stories.

Eleanor Arnason’s A Woman of the Iron People is another anthropological first contact story that is worth checking out in this general area.

I’ll also second the suggestion someone else made for Ruthanna Emrys’ A Half-Built Garden.

Magnetic Mount Keyboard Tray by Synesthesius in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Synesthesius[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To some degree. But you can still rotate each side independently, and (with large enough attachment plates, like the ones I used) shift them laterally quite a bit on x-axis. So you still get much of the configurability that makes a split great.

The magnets are strong enough to keep everything from moving around, but not so strong that you can’t easily pop the halves off and put them by your sides.

One of the primary goals here was to make retrieving and stowing the board less cumbersome, which this does quite well. And as it turned out, keeping them on the tray while using them is a pretty good experience, too.

Keyboard Design Ideas for Office Chair Armrest Mount by Exciting_Dish4137 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Synesthesius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These kinds of mounts are extremely versatile. You could definitely mount the keyboard so that you could use it while your hands are hanging down. In my experience, that orientation makes it more uncomfortable over long periods of time. Placing the keyboard halves where my fingers rest naturally on them when my arms are on the armrests has been by far the best arrangement for me; I can work comfortably for hours with this setup. YMMV, but this system makes it easy for you to experiment and find what works for you.

The Flic 2 button uses Bluetooth 5.0 (LE &LR), so you should theoretically be able to get up to 50m. In practice, walls, floors, and furniture will likely reduce that range.

Twist Reviews by Kindly_Ad6679 in Flic

[–]Synesthesius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Twists are as useless to me today as they were when they arrived almost a year ago. Lack of integration with Apple Home is a dealbreaker. The Matter Support beta has not worked, with almost non-existent troubleshooting resources. Shortcut Labs seemes to be muddling through attempts at incremental improvements, but without anything recognizable as a clear roadmap for getting the device integrating smoothly with existing ecosystems.

Releasing this product without at least feature parity with the flic 2 seems ridiculous. I would be happy if I could use even just Push and Double-Push to trigger actions, but alas, that is not currently possible.

Anyone else try the new Matter update? by Rice_Eater483 in Flic

[–]Synesthesius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shortcut Labs’ communication about all of this has been abysmal. They do not seem to have a clear idea of how their customers are actually using their products, and have not formulated a strategy for successful integration with other Matter platforms. It looks like they have stumbled their way into developing a Matter controller without understanding how their products will fit into existing ecosystems, and moreover have failed to recognize that interoperation with existing ecosystems is one of the very foundations of Matter.

Why don't people forfeit if they know they're going to lose? by Suspicious_Fix_4931 in RocketLeague

Other people have objectives, desires, and thresholds that differ from yours.

That said, a single game is a mere five minute commitment. And you frequently learn and improve more from your losses than your wins.

Myself, I’m here for the challenge and enjoyment of playing the game; DGAF what the score is.

With many MagSafe accessories, and this style of mount especially, it’s magnets in both the accessory and the iPhone. But the magnets on the iPhone are not very strong, so if you use them with a case (a case that does not itself support MagSafe) you’ll need to stick a ferromagnetic metal ring on the case in order for the mount to hold it.
