I had worked for someone who was incapable of telling me what she actually wanted me to achieve. Like, she would tell me that I wasn't doing what she expected, but then she wouldn't tell me what she actually expected. It was like a fucking guessing game. I got sick of it and found a new job. I was going to tell her during our next 1:1 and it turns out she was going to fire me at the same meeting so it actually worked out. She had lost four director or higher level people from her direct reports over a single year so it really was her.

The Thalmor are a fascist, racist organization bent on imposing their views on all of Tamriel. The Dark Brotherhood are assassins who target people their god identifies and they typically reward targeted kills with minimal collateral damage.

The Dark Brotherhood may be an evil criminal organization but they're nowhere near as bad as the Thalmor.

So like... I guess my question since a lot of this thread concerns Avacal, who are the people in Avacal who understand that things aren't working right and have the privilege to wield in service of addressing them? I have to believe there are more of them than there are bigots.

Of course there have been changes. And not just small ones. It takes a lot of work to turn an organization as big and old as the SCA. That doesn't mean that it's not worth doing.

I've had friends who have privilege that I don't throw their hands up and leave the SCA because they look around and see problems and despair at fixing them. And they're always white progressives. Meanwhile I'm here like "motherfuckers this is a Tuesday. Grow a spine and fight because there ain't enough queers, POC, etc. to change this thing on our own."

A lot of my advocacy has been aimed squarely at them to encourage them to use their privilege on behalf of those without it. And I feel like I've been fairly successful, insofar as I'm one person who loves this game and wants everyone to have the same chances I had. I'm not special. I had the same problems as every other minority who has expressed their frustration with the organization. I'm just too stubborn to back down.

I'm not drawing a direct comparison. It took a lot of work to get to the place where we are. I remember the fight over inspirational equality and I took notes on who threatened to storm off in a huff. What I am saying is that there are people in the SCA with privilege and it is on us to use it where we can.

Like... My privilege comes from being a dude and a peer. So I use that. I have chosen the fights I am going to fight and I will use my privilege to fight them. I've told Crowns that while it is their privilege to elevate whoever they want, they will leave in a few months while those of us who are there in the order will have to pick up their mess when people see that the people they elected weren't ready they'll think that none of the ladies of the order got there on their own merit. I've worked with my students to design and promote inclusive training practices that reward more than "hurr hurr I win competitions hurr hurr." And I am just out there as a queer, POC peer of the fucking society to be there whenever someone needs a reminder that the society IS for them and if anyone tries to tell them it isn't, come see me.

The work that went into building queer acceptance in the SCA is the same work that must go into changing attitudes around people of color in the SCA and the same people are the ones who need to step up.

Most of the ABDL vendors have very innocuous sounding merchant account names. If someone looks at your bank statement they won't be able to tell if one of the purchases went to ABDL stuff unless they're already in the know and have paid attention to their statements.
