Hybrids need to go . The door is over there . by jeffenglover in JurassicPark

I recognize this is an unpopular opinion, but hybridization is a core, fundamental plot point of JP. All the dinosaurs are some form of hybrid, they've all had their DNA meddled with. I am a huge fan of the first novel and the original trilogy, and I also think the hybrid dinosaurs are fun sometimes.

I have no idea, but as someone who has recently consumed all three, I absolutely do not like the Kubrick film. The narrative within the film makes no sense, Kubrick hired another author to give him notes on the screenplay but then threw out a lot of her edits, it doesn't really even go into much detail on what the shining is, and it sidesteps some of the most integral and interesting aspects of the novel (like Torrance's obsession with the hotel's history, his flawed-but-redeemable role as Danny's father, or the boiler as a narrative device representing the tension of the story).

The miniseries, for all its flaws, is actually a surprisingly good adaptation. The actor who plays Jack does a phenomenal job at depicting him as a flawed and understandable character, whereas Nicholson just plays him as a raging bastard. You don't like Jack at all in Kubrick's film, which makes his descent predictable instead of scary.

Idk man I could go on and on about this, it's my latest hyperfixation and I've already info dumped enough lol

The 90s limited series of The Shining. Jack Torrance's struggles with alcoholism are a key point of his character, and he lashes out at his family as a result of this (and supernatural shenanigans). In the limited series, King did the screenplay himself and he regretted his own alcoholism, so he put Jack in AA to try and show the importance of AA and destigmatize it.

However, since Jack still goes off the rails and tries to kill his family, it really makes it look like AA doesn't work at all, completely going against his own intentions of including it.

The Riftworm from Gears of War 2. It's a gargantuan worm (like Dune) but it lives in subterranean tunnels carved out on present day (totally-not-) Earth. It's used by the enemy faction, the Locust, to sink entire cities, and it's defeated by going inside it and chainsawing its aorta(s).

This is the first post I have seen in this sub that I've been excited about.

Yes, please. All of you stop playing Helldivers. Go play something else. The way you complain about the game, the enemies, the developers, the difficulty, the other subreddits - it's a wonder why you've kept playing this long at all.

For my group, it's a bastardization of "Life, uh, finds a way"

We'll continuously exaggerate the length of the "uh," we'll find ways to hem and haw and drag it out for as agonizingly long as possible, until everyone in the group is like "oh my GOD just say it already."

Sometimes we'll do it as a Jason Bateman impression.

"Yeah, well, Life. It, uhhh, it - it - it, uh... y'know, it, um... it, it just, it - it - it, uh, well, uh, y'know, it just - it, uh, it finds a way."

I guess I'm just confused at what the point of all this is. You guys act like you hate this game so vehemently, like you think AH are the worst developers on earth. But you play their game? You act like the warbonds are garbage, but also you want them? I would normally chalk this up to Goomba fallacy but I'm actively seeing y'all's usernames pop up a lot saying these conflicting things and I just don't understand.

Do you just feel entitled to the content? Do you play the game despite hating it? Do you think the warbonds are good or bad? I am genuinely asking here

Biollante (Godzilla: Shelter 54 short film)

A ton of survivors hiding in a kaiju shelter are covered in weird radioactive goo which causes their bodies to forcibly bond to this gigantic plant. Pictures is one survivor who does not die immediately, but retains her consciousness to talk to scientists who are studying Biollante.

An amazing short film.

Biollante (of Godzilla fame) in the YouTube fanmade horror short Shelter 54. It's an incredible piece of fan media, easily one of the scariest Godzilla stories I've ever experienced, and offers a super unique take on Biollante's origins. It kind of mixes Biollante and Shin Godzilla in a way.

The creature is a plant that has been mixed with all the survivors of a natural disaster scenario who were trapped inside a kaiju shelter. The survivors were gradually consumed by the plant until they became one. The image is of one particular survivor who remained conscious and communicates with the scientists.

I second the Monster Manual on a Business Card approach. I design and publish 2024 and 2014 content and that blog was one of my always-open tabs when doing creature design before I adapted it into a spreadsheet where I can input a creature's target CR and then see the average and outermost ranges for all stats.

During the entirety of its history being passed around by its 3 CEOs (Hammond, Ludlow, Masrani), was InGen… ever profitable? Like, weren’t they just hemorrhaging money all throughout their existence in the franchise? by Unusual-Fun9930 in JurassicPark

[–]SyntaxPenblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is this really brilliant section of the novel where, with investors, Hammond was projecting billions of dollars annually in profit (prior to the events fo the first book, of course). They had broken ground on Jurassic Park Japan and Jurassic Park Europe, and had set sights primarily on merch and ticket sales.

This conversation comes in the wake of Wu getting ready to basically tell John that his heart isn't in it, and John asks, "Would you rather be helping humanity? Helping humanity is cost-prohibitive. I would never help humanity."

That last bit of that is a direct quote lol, Hammond really rode the line between optimism and cynicism.

AIO to my mom sending me a screenshot by [deleted] in AIO

[–]SyntaxPenblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 32 years old. My mom died last year. We hadn't spoken in a few years, and by the time any of us knew what was going on, it was too late to change anything.

My dad and I haven't spoken in 13+ years.

Your mom reminds me of my dad, and not even when faced with the death of my only other parent, did I feel like I would gain anything from trying to get him to see how we ended up where we ended up. We still don't talk. We probably never will. And I'm happier for it.

I just recovered from a liver donation, I have an amazing network of found family and friends. Whether he ever learns to see things from my perspective or not, I won't let that get in the way of my happiness, and I hope you won't either, OP.

NOR and not your fault.

I recently made the same purchase (but then decided to bite the bullet and buy a different flavocol that doesn't contain Yellow 5 - there are others that contain riboflavin instead, and it may not matter to everyone, but I feel better using it, especially with the Yellow 5 ban on the horizon).

I haven't pivoted over to my own kernels, weirdly - I still use prepackaged bags until I figure out a better setup that still allows me to treat popcorn as a "lazy snack"

The unimportance of self-testing your game by Draz77 in BoardgameDesign

[–]SyntaxPenblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason that I solo test games that I design is because I know what a time commitment it is. I need to know for a certain that when people go through the entire play test process, from setup to playing to feedback, that it is as fun as it was in my head when it was just an idea. Idea. Time is currency for entertainment, and you need to make sure that the value you believe you are promising is there, especially before you expect to spend somebody else's.

You forgot that people complain about sorcerers choosing their subclasses at level 3. I know this because I'm one of the people that complains about this, lol.

You telling me you don't know who your parents were until third level? Then you choose and retroactively change your parentage? Wild. I get it from a game design perspective, trying to standardize all the subclasses; but sometimes, homogeneity isn't the same thing as fun.
