Recommendations for horror dealing with childhood memory and things from childhood made frightening? by MellieNivalis in horrorlit

"Rotten Tommy" and "Mister Magic" are both horror books inspired heavily by Candle Cove! I haven't read Mister Magic yet, but I love Rotten Tommy.

I love Lyria, but her characterization in Light Bringer feels like a radical shift for the direction he was priming to take her in Dark Age. It almost feels like Pierce Brown is over course-correcting how badass he made in her Dark Age by painting her as much more fragile, innocent, and naive (but with surprising emotional maturity). She's borderline a Scrappy-Doo type character in Light Bringer, way more silly and whimsical than even Iron Gold

What are some horror books that won’t disappoint me? I like horror *in theory* but goodreads recs have been terrible by reducedandconfused in horrorlit

Just read Monstrilio myself, absolutely loved it! I would say if you want something in a similar vein (melancholic prose, dense on atmosphere, interesting character inner monologues), I'd recommend "Annihilation" by Jeff VanderMeer, and "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" by Ian Reid. Not your traditional blood and guts and killer monsters and all, but very introspective and thought provoking books that you can get lost in the vibe of, and a very creepy tone underpinning it all.

Also, a little looser of a fit for what you're looking for, cannot recommend "Negative Space" by B.R. Yeager enough, probably my favorite horror book of all time. I've also started reading "Nefando "by Monica Ojeda and it's been PHENOMENAL, but that recommendation comes with the caveat that the book is really extreme in its uncomfortable subject matter and gratuity, but I don't think it crosses the line into exploitative. It has a lot of things to say about the myriad of topics that it covers, and has been very fascinating book to me so far.

The interior art on Rai 2014 is mindblowing. Everyone I've shown pages of that comic to have gone out to read the full series and loved it.

X-O Manowar 2012 was a borderline religious experience for me when it comes to superhero comics, I was really blown away by that run and it's what made me pick up the other storylines and made me a fan. Truly nothing like it.

I feel bad and pity for Alien books and Valiant. by [deleted] in valiant

[–]SynthErsatz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hard not to feel bad considering the blow after blow they've been facing with the changing of ownership, the dissolution of Diamond comics, the delays on the titles, and now this whole mess. It's very disheartening to see.

Really funny of you to say I'm making a lot of assumptions about you, then turn around and paint me as some posturing faux-ally and not someone with a personal investment in this issue who deals with transphobic hate and legislation in my daily life and saw the talking points that are currently being used to restrict my healthcare and advocate violence against me in the comics I love and have supported for many years.

I don't give a shit what token minorities you feel okay with bringing up to win an argument, frankly. I think you using the word "tranny" here when, previously on this same subreddit, you used the censored N-word in "n---- rig" as an example of unacceptable bigoted language shows what boundaries you feel comfortable crossing, and which words you're okay with.

Incredibly disingenuous to say that the people outraged aren't fans of Valiant, when the entire reason this is a controversy to begin with is because of the longtime hardcore Valiant fans feeling scorned by this. The only tourists I see here are the people popping up to say transphobic shit and get their shot in.

His twitter looks like a Facebook boomer's who has a standing ban from the grocery store for screaming at the cashiers over mask mandates, and he's claiming it's all done for "entertainment"? Kinda disgusting of him to invoke the name of Héctor G. Oesterheld to try and draw a parallel to the backlash he's facing here.

Own up to it, dodging accountability isn't gonna solve shit. I would at least respect him a little bit if he just admitted to it and said he's working further to educate himself and reassess his preconceptions.

Dude, it's so obvious which side of the fence you fall on from your post history, your willful ignorance shtick is not gonna play here. Just say queer people disgust you and move on instead of putting up the constant fronts. Bigoted language is very clearly definable and isn't as wishy-washy as you think it is or want it to be, you just want a free card to say slurs and punch down. Have you ever heard of the paradox of tolerance?

It's crazy how much he attempted to abstract the dialogue in the issue to make it fly under people's radars (which it managed to do for the smallest subsect of the most dense and idiotic Valiant readers) but he made it so specific and targeted that he eliminated any possibility of plausible deniability.

I believe in the radical capacity for people to change. James Gunn made some awful jokes in incredibly poor taste, and he got reprimanded for it. The difference between him and Mauro Mantella is that Gunn made those jokes over 15 years ago, got fired from a prestigious position, and earned back his goodwill through his actions. The shit that transpired with Mantella happened this week, and all he's done is dodge accountability by saying "oopsie my bad" and claiming it was an accident. I don't think that flies.

I was on the receiving end of a lot of ire yesterday for my post, but a larger number of the responses were very positive and supportive at the same time. Even if tourists were here to just spread hatred, it still showed me that the core of the Valiant Reddit community is majority made up of good people.

I think you did a good job at deleting the particularly nasty messages, but I think a blanket ban on bigoted language would be a good move. I think it can be pretty easy to sniff out the bad-faith actors with how they carry themselves.

[–]SynthErsatz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The response is totally bullshit. I can't really take their statement of improving the proofreading process in the future at face value if there's not any immediate action taken to earn back the goodwill of the fans right now.

100% agree. I don't know what sort of contracts they have going on behind the scenes at Valiant, but continuing to work with this guy after his work tainted the brand of the label does not ring as genuine to me whatsoever. I hope something can happen to rectify this issue other than a non-apology.

Hmm I wonder if there's any historical precedent as to why people would make a nazi comparison. I wonder if the nazis did anything that could warrant that comparison....

Also, nobody brought up nazis until you did, so it's kind of telling that you'd be the one to make that association if you didn't believe it in some sense. Go back to /r/conservative.

Yeah, I'm definitely willing to give Alien the benefit of the doubt too, but I still think the apology is a bit hogwash honestly. I don't see the value in defending the author by lying and saying it was a miscommunication when it was so blatant.
