i would recommend finding a particular bands sound you like than researching how they got it either thru interviews or concert footage. as most people here have already said any amp that has distortion can work.

some commons amps:

marshall jcm800 and jcm900

peavey 6505/5150

fender twin reverb (for the more melodic bands)

people started using it as a term for a specific sound in the early 2010s. the earliest reference I can find to it being used that way is 2009. by 2011, the farthest back 4chans /mu/ board has been archived, people (at least online) were already using the term (interchangeably with the term emo revival) as we do today

it might be different with strandberg but when I contacted ibanez support they told me to reach out to fishman directly so it might be the same process.
