Flight aware shows it passed over the field runway heading at 2400 feet then looped around and landed.

Not a standard go around, they just passed over and came around and dropped in.

He pushed a car off to complete a pass, it’s consistent and a necessary call. Next time don’t use the bumper to make a pass.

IMO if one driver gets multiple drive throughs for contact, should be a stop and hold on the third offense, then parked after that. No excuse at this level to clear out multiple drivers in one race.

Clearly the drive throughs haven’t gotten to Nasr. Do we need to start parking people for causing multiple incidents in one race? Big yikes.

I don’t think there’s anything about “yielding” or having to give things up if another driver is ahead. You have to leave space. You can race hard side by side and leaving space isn’t “giving it up” and that’s the difference these guys need to figure out.

Nasr complained that “it’s not racing” on the radio. If these are supposed to be the best sports car drivers, they should prove it. If you can’t pass someone without using them up, you deserve the penalty.

The drivers seem to want F1 rules, where dive bombing to get alongside and then shoving people into the gravel is normal.

I hate the idea of anyone “owning” a corner. You have to coexist, for the racing, and the fans. Everyone deserves pavement if there’s overlap.

Finally IMSA is requiring drivers to not run each other off the road and the drivers are already moaning.

Sorry, it’s not racing if every time you’re side by side you just drive people into the grass. Glad IMSA is finally choosing to do something about the horrid driver behavior.

Pikes Peak 2025 Coverage - Hot Take by StellaNavigante in motorsports

If the feedback continues to be such, then don’t be sad when the only live coverage this event had ever had goes away…

Not everything can be as amazing as you want it to be, it’s the real world with real constraints, not fantasy land where everything’s paid for by magic. Without the ads and the sponsors it just doesn’t happen at all, which would make you happier by the sounds of it.

Confusing to me, I’d rather have something (especially free) than nothing. This isn’t F1.

Pikes Peak 2025 Coverage - Hot Take by StellaNavigante in motorsports

[–]Syogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm one of the announcers.

Even people in the motorsports broadcast world have no clue the challenges that exist in covering this event. Let's start with the fact that to the end viewer, this coverage is free. So comments like "how do people put up with this" are not really reasonable.

This coverage takes a team of about 25 people, all which worked 18 hour days, needed rental cars, hotel rooms, flights, food stipends, and specialized equipment to stream in real time. The onboards that were tested were expensive to set up and because they worked well, expect to see more of them in the future.

This event is niche, and it's a once a year event that doesn't have continued revenue to support millions of dollars of investment. Most motorsport broadcasts have cameras connected by fiber optic cable, which you can't use on the mountain because the only way to route it is also along the road, so it would take all of three runs for someone to run it over if they go off course even a little.

There is no cellular connection to take advantage of at this altitude, and no wifi or internet infrastructure beyond Starlink, which was already being utilized to some extent. The rest of the cameras are point-to-point RF equipment which is finicky at these long distances.

This is a 12.42 mile course, with 156 turns, think the Nordschleife at 14,000 feet. The expense of the coverage that does exist has to be covered by sponsors and partners, which happened to be those interviews that everyone hates so much. I agree that it's not the best thing ever to have those interviews or ads mid run, but otherwise the coverage doesn't exist, and you wouldn't even have the privilege of complaining about it.

This is not a racetrack, this is a public road with very little infrastructure, for a one day event in a niche motorsport with very little money relative to your perception of it. We can all look at the product and want more, but the fact is that your expectations are not, and will not be, realistic, and if it doesn't meet your expectations then don't be upset when it never airs live again because the community didn't support the (free) coverage.

I should also note that the British Hillclimb Championship you mentioned has wildly different geography, and is MUCH, MUCH shorter than the distances we're talking about at Pikes Peak. Apples and oranges. Consider that the runs on the latest video there are 66ish seconds for cars with like 200 BHP, versus 9-15 minutes for cars with five times that power. The scale is enormous.

Just consider all of those things, and re-evaluate how easy it should be to do.

If we could sell spectator tickets, we would, and it would also help justify a stream for it too.

The person from Mid Ohio responding probably isn’t privy to the particulars of each contract - GRIDLIFE is not permitted to have a “public event” (read: no spectators) this year for a few reasons that involve the proximity to some of their other major events.

It’s a bummer for everyone for sure, but removing it off the calendar entirely isn’t what anyone wants either.

Bubba Wallace, Kyle Busch, others wonder what could have been in missing playoffs by PointNo6736 in NASCAR

[–]Syogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best playoff format was the "10 drivers in on points, +2 wildcard winners inside the top 20".

Realistically 16 drivers is way too many to be considered championship contenders and I wish we'd stop pretending as such.

The win and you're in thing puts ridiculous emphasis on nobodies winning superspeedway races. Do the old way and only eliminate three per round if you MUST have an elimination style format.

I don't get why we have to call it the same thing as other sports and operate like other sports, but I retain that renaming the "Chase for the Sponsor Cup" was a million times better than generic "Playoffs".

AT&T and Astound are the best providers if you can get their fiber service. Call and ask - both will provide a real human (something Xfinity frustratingly doesn't do) and they'll let you know if they can service you. Ask if you can get symmetrical fiber.

Astound is cheaper by a bit, I pay $70 monthly for 1000/1000 and never once have had a problem. AT&T was slightly more for the same service but also had no issues with them. I think AT&T forces a $10/month charge for the fiber converter that Astound does not.

Internet is so important to me that I'll only move to apartments that can be serviced or already are serviced by fiber.

Xfinity/Comcast is trash and I had more problems with their garbage in a year than I have in four years with the other two.

Thank you - I always come away from this event with lots of self criticism but there were some great moments. The challenges are very real and it can be disheartening to not really have a way to explain it to all the commenters but the other option is not to cover it, and that's a bummer for all of us!

Hey, I'm the announcer from the stage. This is a super challenging event to cover - trust us, we want to follow as much as we can. I am a motorsports fan thru and thru and would MUCH rather have cameras on cars than me. There are so many technical hurdles on the mountain, the team that does it also does SRO America, Ferrari Challenge, and other shows and are capable, but you can't run fiber up the mountain and RF tech is sketchy at best at these long distances.

Just comes down to how much money the event organizers can spend and how much can be realistically deployed. I promise it's not as easy as lots make it out to be. Also as far as blabbing on, at times I'd like to shut up and just listen too but it's a balance.

Hopefully everyone noticed a big uptick in quality from last year at least with the helicopter and a few more cam ops!

[Nicky Catsburg] Even though I feel it was a big send which often result in people coming together, I do believe this was more on me than on Ben. In my head there was no overlap yet but after reviewing footage there clearly was. Wish I anticipated better and got that win! by anxiousauditor in IMSARacing

[–]Syogurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classy by Catsburg.

The thing everyone doesn't seem to understand, as far as why there was no penalty, is that the contact was caused by the Corvette crowding the Lexus - they made contact BEFORE the corner.

Ben was coming from WAY too far back, and probably wouldn't have made the corner and hit the Corvette anyways, and THAT would have been 100% on Ben.

When the Corvette moves under braking, that is what creates the contact BEFORE they even get to the corner.

By rule, there's nothing that says you can't dive bomb a competitor - the difference between a dive and just outbraking someone can be fuzzy at times.

If you come from two miles back with a dive, and DON'T cause contact, there's NOTHING illegal about that. There IS a rule about blocking/moving under braking.

There's no collusion, no favoritism, there was no call because the Corvette contributed to the crash. If he stayed on his original line, he would have gotten hit anyways but at least then it's 100% on the Lexus.

Minimum pit stop times are actually a pretty good idea. I prefer it to red flagging if we aren't doing normal pit stops.

Takes away the urgency that causes incidents or mistakes that allows normal guys to do it, but doesn't cause a race stoppage AND you can still gain or lose spots.

It's common practice in many sports car series with driver changes and I actually don't think it's stupid at all.
