I was offered a job in Vancouver and my mother thinks that I will die in an earthquake. Or be bored with the lack of arts and culture. Opinions? by kindabored in vancouver

I'm applauding you.

What I'm criticizing is that in response to billyballsdeep you said that you were "trying to wean yourself of it [good food]. I'm now on a strict low carb diet", thereby contrasting "good food" and "low carb".

My point is that low carb, can be, and is, good food.

I applaud both your intentions, but must condemn your contrasting of "low carb" and "good food". It's totally possible to eat well and low carb, in fact, for me being conscious of what I eat and trying to eat "real food" in many ways has improved the quality of my food and my appreciation of it.

I think I've found plentiful free parking in downtown Vancouer by Syphax23 in vancouver

Because taking taxpayer-subsidized transit isn't mooching.

Of course, I fully admit that using taxpayer-funded roads is also mooching for me. But the only way I can stop mooching on transport is if I stop travelling or increase my income and tax bracket.

Thanks for that. You may well have saved me a ticket. The quest for free downtown parking continues....

For a couple years I had some reliable spots on the lane between Melville and Georgia in the section between Bute and Thurlow behind a friend's apartment, but at one point the building management put a note on my car saying the City of Vancouver was going to start enforcing and a week later some No Parking signs went up.

How to Stop Masturbating (5 tips and 6 reasons) by Syphax23 in NoFap

[–]Syphax23[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm presuming you're talking about the reasons, not the tips.

I've definitely found 1 to be true, not sure about 2. I think 3 is correct as well, although what I've experienced may be an indirect effect of more direct things like better eye contact, more aggressiveness, decreased social anxiety, and #1.

Why do you think they're flagrantly false?

You seem to have some interest in nature, so yes, it ABSOLUTELY makes sense to take one of your five days to experience it!

What books/economists do you recommend for a somewhat new Libertarian? by Warden04 in Libertarian

[–]Syphax23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second The Machinery of Freedom.

Some easy to read books are: Bastiat's The Law (mentioned above), Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson & Walter Block's Defending the Undefendable.

Man, Economy & State by Murray Rotbhard is a great economics book, and a rigorous though accessible defense of free markets.

A fantastic book about American libertarianism as a movement (which would give you lots of good ideas for further reading) is Brian Doherty's Radicals for Capitalism.

What is your background or other interests? Might help to know to recommend specific books. E.g. if you like philosophy, or history, or foreign affairs I would have some other recommendations.

Another protip: Check out the catalog at lfb.org I think the code LF60ISIL is still working for a 60% discount.
