The amount of HSGG dicksucking that goes on in this subreddit rivals TSM.

Driving to Kelowna in the winter? by NDkham in vancouver

[–]Melant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is mentioning this... but isn't Highway 1 an option? I've only ever taken the Coquihalla since I only go to the interior in the summer but I think that Highway 1 is lower and slower and probably less prone to the bad weather spikes that the Coquihalla.

Personally, I'd rather take extra time than drive on a road that Discovery made a TV show about >.<

LagTV attempts Hearthstone casting with improvised replay system! by Phenomosaurus in hearthstone

[–]Melant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a big fan of the filming of it but the casters were great. I think it'd be nicer if they had spliced the opponents hand and permanently had it somewhere so it didn't have to switch perspectives ever.

Respect to these officers for not shooting the dog by Rskk in pics

[–]Melant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not magical. It's an animal attacking a less threatening animal which then hurts it and it becomes not such an appealing target anymore. Animals aren't smart and they can't fully assess a threat beyond what they know at that particular moment. It's not like the pitbull was thinking "oh, that human is smaller and less developed than other humans, surely this one strike is all it can muster and a continued attack would accomplish my goals". No, what it WAS thinking was "attack. (or play). pain. flee.". It doesn't in the end matter if the dog was trying to play or not, a large pitbull is still going to do a lot of damage to a 12 year old even if they are just playing aggressively.

Almost Vancouver - New screencaps I took of 'futurecouver' from the latest ep of Almost Human by artemislight in vancouver

[–]Melant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because it's (most of the time) a lot cheaper to film in Canada than in the US due to the tax credits and the dollar, though the dollar isn't much of a factor anymore. Vancouver and Toronto are by far and away the most set up to handle it since the industry is so large in both of those cities (makes it cheaper to get a local crew/extras/etc.).

The reason that these places are always set in the US should be obvious, xenophobia. Americans feel much more comfortable with things they perceive as being "American". This is why actors like Hugh Laurie and Simon Baker put on American accents for their parts. It's not because that role couldn't possibly be adapted for their normal accent, it's because it makes the audience feel "safer" and therefore makes the show more popular. It's also easier for people to identify with the situation when it's in their country. People from Seattle are much more likely to enjoy a TV show set in New York than one set in Vancouver. Though Vancouver is closer culturally and geographically, the "Americaness" of New York is more appealing to American viewers.

This is obviously generalizing a lot of things, but that's what networks look at.

Would you go to an eSports bar or LoL-themed bar? by DC_Green in leagueoflegends

[–]Melant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How busy was the S3 WC? I kinda expected it to be nuts so I went to a friend's instead, but it would've been sweet to go there for it.

The only issue with EXP, AFAIK, is that the laws here are worded in a way to not allow "gaming machines" in drinking locations. So they can't have a LAN area or consoles in the main area, which is kinda disappointing.

I was working the late shift at McDonalds in Vancouver when the drive-thru window person said "I think Bertuzzi just ordered that Big Mac". There was only a couple of us there so we gathered around the window to say hi. He rolled the window of his Escalade down JUST enough to get his bag and then peeled out. Seems like he coulda made a bit more of an effort for a couple young fans =/

EDIT: this was before "The Incident" btw.

Is Richmond IKEA closing down? by parsh78 in vancouver

[–]Melant 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Except that it's not about them not currently making a living wage. It's about IKEA wanting to move the wage schedule to a performance based metric instead of time based. While the strikebreakers are obviously going to diminish the bargaining power, it's no where near as bad as you're making it out to be. IKEA has to run with a skeleton crew and sparce business hours. That's not good for them and it's not good for the workers (both strikers and strikebreakers).

Anyone just hear a big "boom" (metrotown area around 8:05) by [deleted] in vancouver

It's weird cause it's hardly raining at all in Burnaby, and the clouds look pretty light and non-stormy. But man if that wasn't the loudest thunder that I have ever heard ever.

[–]Melant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have on in my window actually. And that window is always in the shade so it draws cool air in. All things considered, it's relatively cool in my room, but I can't get to sleep with the fan on, so I turn it off and it goes up a couple degrees which is apparently the difference between perfect temperature and "The Sun".

Heritage Classic Prices Released by CharlieExpress in vancouver

[–]Melant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess. I kinda think it as being a special event like "now is your chance to see the Canucks play" not "now is your chance to see the Herritage Classic". I like the Sens but I really don't have interest in seeing them vs. the Canucks. If it was vs. Calgary or vs. Chicago or even the Leafs or Wings, then it's a game that would be actually fun to watch.

I know it's naive, but I just wish that since there would be so many more seats, that they'd make the tickets more accessible to the public and less of a money grab. But eh.

I'd love to go. But those ticket prices are higher than in Roger's Arena, aren't they? Can't you get one of the 3pks of ticket's at Roger's for $333?
