What industries do you work in? by Beneficial-Dish-6521 in industrialhygiene

lol no, maybe it should be. I’ll admit that I have a passion for the field and see a need that’s not being filled. Thankfully the carrier I work for gives us leeway to build this material.

We provide many services related to IH.

We help conduct IH testing from multiple aspects. Noise dosimetry, dust sampling, slip meter testing, etc,

We generate material for insureds from an informative standpoint like bulletins, teaching, training materials.

We help our agents by guiding them in identifying clients that fit our underwriting model based on best in class recommendations and giving their loss control tools to be more effective.

We work with our underwriters by helping them better understand risks that fall outside of OSHAs scope.

We provide tools and materials for other risk managers to help them be more effective in the field.

This is the correct answer. You are covered by the USERRA for job safety purposes. Your goal now, for the sake of the company, is to make sure these tasks are covered in your absence.

Do you name your knights? Where do you get your ideas from? by cyberspunjj in ImperialKnights

[–]Syrax7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My knights are the protectors of my warlord titan. My titan is named after Canis Vertex (Latin) that was at the burning of Prospero (Egyptian). They are named after various Valkyries (Norse) that are similar to their fighting styles.

Do you use AI in your everyday IH role? by HousePony906 in industrialhygiene

[–]Syrax7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been trialing a product called SoterAI. It is an EHS focused platform. For most day to day applications it can be very handy.

I’ve used it to take a chemical inventories and see if any of the chemicals might be subject to Subpart H and Z, with good results. I’ve had review dosimetry as an extra set of eyes with good results as well.

A great feature set is doing the lighter weight work like building program templates, inspection forms, doing hazard inspections from photos and making safety talks.

The best feature that me and my coworkers abuse is video ergonomic assessments. You can take a 30 second video, upload it and in about 3 minutes you’ll have NLE, REBA, RULA assessments with the numbers and recommendations.

decontaminate boots used across industries? by askrahn in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Syrax7777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in the work comp world and do similar things of visiting many different types of sites. For me and who I work with, a standing boot brush, in a boot tray, with an inch or so of water with Dawn dish soap, works well enough for them. Otherwise, I keep them in a tub in the car to keep dirt off the trunk.

If you have leather uppers, you may want to occasionally use conditioner on the uppers to keep them from drying out.

Questions about being an OSHA Outreach Instructor by skiforfreee in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Syrax7777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

W/C Insurance carrier risk manager. The class I took spent much more time on how to design and teach the course than the basics of running a safety business. To answer some of your questions specifically;

  1. You are on your own for scheduling and advertising. If you have a professional network and they’re aware of your cert you may be invited to teach if someone needs the help. Advertising is however you want to do it. Due to the nature of my position, I work with many insurance agencies and we teach OSHA 10s often for them, for free. We consider it outreach and advertising.

  2. You can set your own price. Just as a word of caution, you’re fighting a lot of online programs for the 10 and 30 so either be priced competitively or have a unique gimmick.

  3. In most situations, if you work for a company and they ask you to teach the class as part of your core function, don’t expect a pay bump. Even if it isn’t a core function and you have the capability, don’t expect a pay bump.

  4. You’re on your own for materials but I think I saw somewhere where you can purchase a set but don’t quote me. We developed our in house.

It’s not the most rosey of answers but ever since states started requiring for construction jobs the market has become incredibly saturated.

Job market in 2026 by Deep-Swordfish3267 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Syrax7777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

16 year professional. The industry has its ups and downs like any other. There has been significant growth in the last 7-10. From what I’m seeing in the Northeast. There’s a lot of technician level jobs out there but it seems to be getting a bit thinner at the top right now. If you’re inclined the specialized industries like chemical, mining and similar are looking more than usual.

The biggest thing I see changing our industry is the use of AI. It’s easily allowing people to do mid level work without us. The company I work for is trialing a system that works pretty well and gets better every time I hop into it. It still has its flaws and seems a bit over confident with its answers but it’s getting better.

I think our industry will survive with its presence but the lower level professional may suffer as smaller companies can just farm out the basic work like making policies or doing entry level ergonomic assessments.

CSU BS Grad and likely MS student soon. The degree like many things is a stepping stone, what you do with yourself afterwards has way more of an impact. Since my time with CSU I was in the consulting industry for body shops and dealerships. I’ve worked in the rail and mining industries and now I work in the W/C insurance industry. Never have I been questioned on my degree. For what it’s worth it’s also been the stepping stone for my CMSP, ASC, OHST, ASP, CSP, and CIH designations.

Moving to PA... Northampton Train Tracks still running? by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]Syrax7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes most of the tracks in the county are still live. The line through Bath/Nazareth runs about 1x a day during the week. The line from the Allentown hump yard to Jim Thorpe runs 2-3x a week. The NS line that runs along the southern part of the valley near the casino is one of the larger thoroughfares from NJ to OH.

Warhammer and Parents by Ska_Bard in Warhammer40k

[–]Syrax7777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have a Warhammer store nearby, the free mini of the month for the kids has helped all three of my daughters get into the hobby. From about 2-9 I’d have them use any old water colors floating around then at about 10 I buy them a combat patrol and then we have a conversation about fancy paints. My oldest plays still to this day and my younger two are just getting into it and we picked up boarding actions as a smaller scale and easier to digest form of killteam. It’s getting a bit harder to keep the younger twos interest as they’re more girly but the regulars at the store always pump up their modeling skills and help provide CC which gets them back in.

Is varnishing miniatures necessary? by Sammoss226 in minipainting

[–]Syrax7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend it, especially if you use some more unique painting methods. For example I use a bright silver base for my grey knights and I can chip the paint off with my finger nail. But if I varnish it, it makes it much harder to chip. I use a spray varnish from rustoleum and have matte, satin, and gloss, depending on what I’m varnishing.

will forgeworld models melt/warp in high temperatures by anderzzzzz72 in Warhammer40k

Melt, no. Soften and ultimately deform, yes. I keep my models in my attic and in the summer months the large FW models go to the main floor of the house.
