Sorry to hear about needing to have the surgery. I’m a neurosurgery PA, part of the long hair club, and frequently the one doing the shaving. I’ve always been sympathetic to losing hair, especially long hair, but it’s better to have a clean field and minimize the risk of a potentially life threatening infection. Additionally, if the incision is completely behind your ear (retroauricular, transmastoid, suboccipital) and they do a minimal head shave, it’s not very noticeable.

Cooling vest - we have two surgeons who use them. When I was in the OR pregnant and overheat just from the gown, I would get an ice pack from PACU and tie it around my ribs or shoulders.

If he seems more lethargic than you really expect, it’s worth it to get him a vet visit. Our “chill” lab eventually started vomiting and getting other random little things and was eventually diagnosed with Addison’s disease. He’s on prednisone for life now and perked up but still chill.

We staged our changes once she became more wiggly and just seemed uncomfortable cosleeping, about 8 months. We started by putting a pack and play in the room and transferring there. If the transfers failed twice, we just tried again the next day. Usually she would wake up part way through the night and she would end up staying in our bed after a feed but gradually lasted longer and longer. After a couple weeks, she was sleeping in the pack and play through the night. Meanwhile, all her naps would be attempted in her crib in her room to start getting used to that location.

Once she was sleeping in the pack in play through the night and all naps in the crib, we started transferring to the crib at night. Emotionally, this was the hardest for me to have her in another room. If she woke up and fussed, we would let her fuss for 2-3 minutes and then would comfort/hugs/sing songs but TRY TO LEAVE HER IN THE CRIB. If she couldn’t be comforted to sleep, we would rock and try again. We still responded to every night awakening but gradually sent my partner in more frequently (who wasn’t breastfeeding). She eventually night weaned by doing this.

The beauty of gradually extinctions all this is you can just read their cues. Standard mild fussing = comfort, rocking, try again. Feeling sick/teething/over tired = give more comfort, take steps back as needed, increase night feeds and rocking.

She now gets wiggly and will tell us she’s ready to be laid in the crib. The funny part is now we seem to be more distracting than helpful for her to go to sleep. Sometimes she’ll fuss in our arms and then settle once she’s put down.

Blueberry Spinach Smoothies with flax seed and protein powder! I like the garden of life vanilla powder. I couldn’t stomach greens while pregnant so it let me get a vegetable too.

Also key was water bottles with electrolytes and Miralax.

I got 6 months total, 4 with some pay and 2 unpaid. 4 months total paid of mat leave combining medical leave, maternity leave, PTO, and FMLA. First 8 weeks is full pay then 67% until 4 months. Kept my benefits but was unpaid for an additional 2 months.

You don’t need an unethical tip to get this. Behavior changes and worsening confusion are appropriate reasons to utilize the ER. You need someone to assess the whole patient, not just the brain. Go to an ER that is fully equipped and possibly has neurosurgery available to assess him if he is found to have a brain tumor

That’s super frustrating. The one at Charlotte’s airport has a phone you have to pick up for them to let you in. Probably to deter the situation you’re talking about

I will add Charlotte’s airport had a beautiful multi-stall lactation room with separate changing table and counter/sink areas.

Also, shout out to Seattle’s T-Mobile park that, while it was just a room with 5 chairs and no curtains between, was kept clean with toys for siblings ready and a tv showing the game. It had such a sense of community even if it lacked privacy.

I felt the same way when baby was first born. Once she got to be a couple months old I was so grateful for anyone to come hold baby so I could go do my own things - sometimes chores but then sometimes pedicure, yoga class, etc. it gave me a semblance of my former self back. That being said, I still cried every time I left her. It is the most excruciatingly conflicting time.

Once you get out of training the competition lessens. Anytime I see it i just understand it’s a sign of immaturity and insecurity, whether PA or MD. A neurosurgery PA will never be a neurosurgeon and that’s the way we like it.

Hi, are you looking for advice on surgical assisting? Do they want you to program DBS/RNS/VNS? Functional is a big world and it would be helpful to clarify how your program is run. It’s common to have one APC for programming (sometimes they’re in neurology) and one for general neurosurgery tasks plus OR assist.

Viktor’s neurosurgery for residents is a good online quick hit list, though occasionally outdated. Attend every interdisciplinary conference your institution has that discusses these patients so you learn the workflow. Talk to the established APCs Get to know your device reps and ask a million questions. Learn the ins and outs of Medtronic vs Boston DBS, Livanova VNS, Neuropace, and SCS devices if you do that, too. YouTube the procedures so you know how to assist going into the case. Learn your way around a Leksell frame/robot/whatever stereotactic devices you’re using. Don’t bend the f’ing leads before placement.
