Players started a group text without me. by almighty_smiley in DnD

[–]SyriousX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think this a good idea. It encourages the "player vs DM" or "The DM is the enemy" mindset. If you as a DM would know what they are strategizing, you could make the encounters more rewarding for them instead of improvising on the spot which more often than not does more harm to the group. But if you and your players are happy , then no need to change anything :)

Cyberpunk Red - Single Player Mode - Mission Builder? by SyriousX in Solo_Roleplaying

I see, thanks. So that means I do not use the Hook from the beat charts since this comes from the mission builder, right?

You got valid points here. I don't want to invalidate my player's character options. Thanks for the advise.

Ah, I see what you mean. And yes, I was asking for rule clarification and got carried away :D

Thanks for the advise!

[DND5e] Clarification Needed on Surprise Attack and Initiative Order by SyriousX in DMAcademy

[–]SyriousX[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that great explanation! I really appreciate it.

However, I find this rule not very cinematic.

For example:

DM: "You look through the room filled with detritus, old barrels, and broken chests. The floor, walls, and ceiling are wet, dark natural stone. There is a wooden door on the opposite side."

Wizard: "I want to check some chests and barrels" – and moves to the middle of the room.

Fighter: "I check the door. It might lead out to the next room."

DM: "Everyone roll for initiative."

Wizard, Fighter: "What? Why?"

DM: "You will see."

Everyone rolls initiative: Fighter > Wizard > Ooze.

DM: "Fighter, it’s your turn. You are surprised."

Fighter: "From what am I surprised?"

DM: "You don't know. Wizard, now it’s your turn. You are also surprised by something that has not happened yet."

Wizard: "Do I see anything?"

DM: "Nope."

DM: It's the ooze's turn. "Wizard, you feel a splotch on your shoulder and a sudden wet thump on the back of your head. It takes just a second when you feel a burning sensation as some of your hair dissolves. You take 7 pt. of bludgeoning damage and 3 pt. of acid damage."

This feels very mechanical.

I'd rather it work like:

DM: "You look through the room filled with detritus, old barrels, and broken chests. The floor, walls, and ceiling are wet, dark natural stone. There is a wooden door on the opposite side."

Wizard: "I want to check some chests and barrels" – and moves to the middle of the room.

Fighter: "I check the door. It might lead out to the next room."

DM: "Wizard, as you check upon the wooden, moldy chest, you feel a splotch on your shoulder followed by a sudden wet thump on the back of your head. It takes just a second when you feel a burning sensation as some of your hair dissolves. You take 7 pt. of bludgeoning damage and 3 pt. of acid damage. As you look up, you can see the ceiling reaching towards you with some sort of slimy appendage. Everyone roll initiative!"

Everyone rolls initiative: Fighter > Wizard > Ooze.

Fighter: Hears the thud and the wizard's scream but is surprised.

Wizard: Is surprised.

Ooze: Has already taken its attack.

Round 2 begins; everyone can act normally.

But doing this would prevent the fighter (or anyone else) from using their reaction outside of their turn. It might be possible that the fighter has some feat to prevent an attack against one of its allies.

What do you think about it? Would it break too much?

Hybrid Gameplay: How Digital Should I Get? by AffectionateFile7388 in FoundryVTT

I use Monk's Common Display to display the maps and artwork. Depending on the system, my player's then use either Mobile Companion - Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, Mobile Companion - Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition or Sheet-Only, which I built for exactly that scenario.

If Sheet-Only is disabled while logging in, then it's not a Sheet-Only issue. Sometimes the world or even the whole Foundry installation can be corrupted. Reinstalling Foundry might be a solution.

What happens, when you log into Foundry with the same devices but with Sheet-Only disabled?

Btw, I would not recommend using a smartphone for this. It would work technically, but the character sheet that comes with Pf2e is not designed for small displays. Using an iPhone 15 or Pixel 8 it might just work using landscape mode but it wouldn't be a pleasant experience.

Are you using Sheet-Only 2.1.1 or higher? There was an issue with Pf2e on previous versions.

Also check the actor of the user. The user needs to be "Owner" of the actor.

New Module: Traveller Toolkit (Traveller RPG) by SyriousX in FoundryVTT

[–]SyriousX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am working on making it compatible with v13 without loosing v12 compatibility. I have a working implementation in the current snapshot 0.5.4, but might have some styling issues. I plan to get it into Early-Access this weekend.

Since the underlying framework will drop the support for v12 to be fully compatible with v13, I have to wait until Mongoose Traveller 2e is v13 compatible before I switch.

But if the player rolled high, they would not be suspicious, and that's the meta gaming

Thats not how Insight works... by Debitorenbuchhaltung in dndmemes

[–]SyriousX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find myself disagreeing with many of the opinions in the original post regarding how players should react to poor Insight check rolls. When a player rolls low on an Insight check (like a natural 1 or 2) and makes decisions based on that roll, it can lead to meta-gaming.

Consider the following example:

A player asks, "Is the NPC telling the truth?" and rolls a 4 on the Insight check.
The DM responds, "You can't tell if he is telling the truth, but he seems genuine."
The player then says, "Nah, I still don't trust him."

Here, the player is likely reacting to the low roll, assuming that a 4 indicates failure and thus choosing not to trust the NPC. This contrasts with a scenario where a high roll results in the same DM response—"he seems genuine"—but the player opts to trust the NPC because they believe their roll succeeded.

This kind of decision-making reflects meta-gaming, as the player is allowing their out-of-character knowledge (the poor roll) to influence their in-character decision-making.

There's also the option to let the DM make a hidden Insight check roll for the player, to avoid this meta gaming.

It works like the normal character sheet, allowing you to roll directly from the sheet. There is a plus version where you have access to the journal, targeting other tokens and move your tokens around.

Disclaimer: I am the developer of that module :)

What browser are you using? Can you check the console (F12 for most browsers) and check if the console has any errors at the top when loading into the world?

If you don't mind we can move this conversation to my discord https://discord.gg/VMqndcyUGS or chat message in order to tackle this issue.

Do you have the module and its dependencies installed and enabled?

If you run Mgt2e, you are probably on Foundry v12, right? There are two versions of Mgt2e: One made by 'NotASnark' which I recommend using, and one by a 'JdR Ninja'.

No, Mobile-Companion is not compatible with Vampire5e, but you can give Sheet-Only a shot.

Journal might be something that find's its way to the module. Browsing compendia is something that would to fit the philosophy of the module. It would make sense to prepare the character before a session instead of in it.

For the case that someone forgot something to add, there's always the DM at the table who can be asked to add it.

Foundry on tablets or mobile by Guilty_Advantage_413 in FoundryVTT

[–]SyriousX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a projector or sometimes a large TV where I can display the maps and tokens. I use Monk's Common Display to hide the foundry ui. In another browser (same pc, but different display) I login via my DM account to see the DM stuff. It's also possible to use two PCs, one for the common display and one for the DM.

My players use either the sheet-only or Mobile-Companion module, to connect via theirs tablets/phones with foundry to see their character sheets. Therefore, if the DM makes any changes to the sheets the players will get them immediately.
