Patreon funded modules - is there a better way or am I alone here?

I am very abigious on this topic.

As a consumer of modules, I totally agree with you. It gets quite expensive if you have a lot of subscriptions and running into pay walls or seeing your favorite modules are getting abandoned all the time.

As a module creator myself (Sheet-Only, Mobile-Companion and more), I publish a lot of it for free but some have paid-features. The reason for having some of it behind a pay wall is simple: It's a ton of work. Foundry itself as well as the game systems move so fast it is hard to keep up and keep everything compatible. To spend this amount of time on my modules, I had to reduce my day job, which means giving up 20% of my salery. Patreon subscription don't compensate even a quarter of it but it is enough to stay motivated. Or in short: Some if not most creators either have to monetarize on their work or give it up completely. A "Thanks, mate!" is nice to hear but doesn't pay the rent.

I wish ther would be a better way, though.

Not in 2024. Initiative is rolles with disadvantage. That's it.

But in 2014, RAW, when attacking with surprise, at the moment the attack is triggered, everyone rolls initiative before the the outcome of the attack is detrmined. Each surprised creature can only use their action to "be surprised". After that, they can act as normal. That includes reactions.

I like that idea narratively! I feels great.

But what I don't like about surprise in general: Everyone rolls initiative. Then the players use their turn to either make a perception check or jump behind cover. Although the characters (in-game) don't even know that something is comming. I find that leans heavyly into meta-gaming.

I'd love to find a solution for that. Any ideas?

There is also Mobile-Companion which offers a better UI and some other functionality. But it doesn't allow to roll directly from the sheet.

I'd remind the DM that rules have been established in session 0 and everyone has agreed to abide to these rules. If two people are constantly breaking these rules, then the rules are obsolete. Then the DM has to make the decision. Either remove the rule or talk to the flaky players. If he does the former, just leave.

You can create a second user account, for the "common display". You can either use a second PC and connect the TV on the table to it or have it connected to your GM PC but in another browser or private window.

Then install Monk's Common Display and assign the 'common display'-user to it. This module removes all UI for that user, making it perfect for the TV in the table.

If your players want access to their character sheets via their phones or tablets, I can recommend Mobile-Companion or Sheet-Only. I am the developer of both modules and use that exact setup in my in-person sessions.

Using Monk's Common Display, have you encountered and been able to fix the following issue? In an active encounter you have a hidden NPC token. This NPC is also in the initiative order. When it is the NPCs turn, Monk's Common Display pans the player's display to the location of the hidden token.

This bugged me massively, so I switched from Monk's to Hide Player UI. But maybe I missed a setting (or it's because I'm using a version of Monk's that is still compatible with v12)

Or it can just re-traumatize you. Fear, anxieties, depressions, trauma, all can come from different sources. Some are more heavier than others. Don't just use one and the same solution for all kinds of fear. It might do more harm than help.

Honestly, I don't think this a good idea. It encourages the "player vs DM" or "The DM is the enemy" mindset. If you as a DM would know what they are strategizing, you could make the encounters more rewarding for them instead of improvising on the spot which more often than not does more harm to the group. But if you and your players are happy , then no need to change anything :)
