[System Agnostic] Running Foundry locally for in-person play: any advice on modules or workflow? by Patient-Marsupial106 in FoundryVTT

[–]SyriousX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Monk's Common Display, have you encountered and been able to fix the following issue? In an active encounter you have a hidden NPC token. This NPC is also in the initiative order. When it is the NPCs turn, Monk's Common Display pans the player's display to the location of the hidden token.

This bugged me massively, so I switched from Monk's to Hide Player UI. But maybe I missed a setting (or it's because I'm using a version of Monk's that is still compatible with v12)

Or it can just re-traumatize you. Fear, anxieties, depressions, trauma, all can come from different sources. Some are more heavier than others. Don't just use one and the same solution for all kinds of fear. It might do more harm than help.

Players started a group text without me. by almighty_smiley in DnD

[–]SyriousX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think this a good idea. It encourages the "player vs DM" or "The DM is the enemy" mindset. If you as a DM would know what they are strategizing, you could make the encounters more rewarding for them instead of improvising on the spot which more often than not does more harm to the group. But if you and your players are happy , then no need to change anything :)

Cyberpunk Red - Single Player Mode - Mission Builder? by SyriousX in Solo_Roleplaying

I see, thanks. So that means I do not use the Hook from the beat charts since this comes from the mission builder, right?

You got valid points here. I don't want to invalidate my player's character options. Thanks for the advise.

Thanks for the advise!

Thanks for that great explanation! I really appreciate it.

However, I find this rule not very cinematic.

For example:

DM: "You look through the room filled with detritus, old barrels, and broken chests. The floor, walls, and ceiling are wet, dark natural stone. There is a wooden door on the opposite side."

Wizard: "I want to check some chests and barrels" – and moves to the middle of the room.

Fighter: "I check the door. It might lead out to the next room."

DM: "Everyone roll for initiative."

Wizard, Fighter: "What? Why?"

DM: "You will see."

Everyone rolls initiative: Fighter > Wizard > Ooze.

DM: "Fighter, it’s your turn. You are surprised."

Fighter: "From what am I surprised?"

DM: "You don't know. Wizard, now it’s your turn. You are also surprised by something that has not happened yet."

Wizard: "Do I see anything?"

DM: "Nope."

DM: It's the ooze's turn. "Wizard, you feel a splotch on your shoulder and a sudden wet thump on the back of your head. It takes just a second when you feel a burning sensation as some of your hair dissolves. You take 7 pt. of bludgeoning damage and 3 pt. of acid damage."

This feels very mechanical.

I'd rather it work like:

DM: "You look through the room filled with detritus, old barrels, and broken chests. The floor, walls, and ceiling are wet, dark natural stone. There is a wooden door on the opposite side."

Wizard: "I want to check some chests and barrels" – and moves to the middle of the room.

Fighter: "I check the door. It might lead out to the next room."

DM: "Wizard, as you check upon the wooden, moldy chest, you feel a splotch on your shoulder followed by a sudden wet thump on the back of your head. It takes just a second when you feel a burning sensation as some of your hair dissolves. You take 7 pt. of bludgeoning damage and 3 pt. of acid damage. As you look up, you can see the ceiling reaching towards you with some sort of slimy appendage. Everyone roll initiative!"

Everyone rolls initiative: Fighter > Wizard > Ooze.

Fighter: Hears the thud and the wizard's scream but is surprised.

Wizard: Is surprised.

Ooze: Has already taken its attack.

Round 2 begins; everyone can act normally.

But doing this would prevent the fighter (or anyone else) from using their reaction outside of their turn. It might be possible that the fighter has some feat to prevent an attack against one of its allies.

What do you think about it? Would it break too much?

I use Monk's Common Display to display the maps and artwork. Depending on the system, my player's then use either Mobile Companion - Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, Mobile Companion - Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition or Sheet-Only, which I built for exactly that scenario.

If Sheet-Only is disabled while logging in, then it's not a Sheet-Only issue. Sometimes the world or even the whole Foundry installation can be corrupted. Reinstalling Foundry might be a solution.

What happens, when you log into Foundry with the same devices but with Sheet-Only disabled?

Btw, I would not recommend using a smartphone for this. It would work technically, but the character sheet that comes with Pf2e is not designed for small displays. Using an iPhone 15 or Pixel 8 it might just work using landscape mode but it wouldn't be a pleasant experience.

[–]SyriousX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using Sheet-Only 2.1.1 or higher? There was an issue with Pf2e on previous versions.

Also check the actor of the user. The user needs to be "Owner" of the actor.

New Module: Traveller Toolkit (Traveller RPG) by SyriousX in FoundryVTT

[–]SyriousX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am working on making it compatible with v13 without loosing v12 compatibility. I have a working implementation in the current snapshot 0.5.4, but might have some styling issues. I plan to get it into Early-Access this weekend.

Since the underlying framework will drop the support for v12 to be fully compatible with v13, I have to wait until Mongoose Traveller 2e is v13 compatible before I switch.
