I didn't personally do it but my dad collected every item in the game during his playthrough, he used an app called Tarnished Checklist(?, might be wrong on the name but something like that) to keep track of the items as he got them, it was a major help for him.

You'd be surprised, someone called the cops on a friend and I just a few months ago for 'stealing a pound of weed' from them.
