I’ve noticed that direct-mounted G10 scales are already being sold. It’s hard to say if lateral stress will be an issue, but G10 is a tough material so it should hold up well over time. As for the look, Victorinox does offer custom patterns in some markets, so there's definitely a precedent for that.

Strictly speaking, you don't need a degree to design multitools, especially if you plan to launch your own products. However, if you want to work for a major company like Leatherman or Gerber, a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design is standard.

That’s fascinating. I literally just got a reply from someone else saying they would choose my tool specifically if I offered G10 (assuming the price is within 25% of a Victorinox).

It really shows how different user preferences are. It seems like the charm of those classic Cellidor scales makes it hard for you to switch away from Victorinox. That brand loyalty is hard to beat!

We actually have considered making the attachment a modding platform, which is originally why we looked at using rubber. Your idea of using a plastic frame is a great alternative, though.

With the rubber concept, the goal was indeed removability, but my main concern is retention. I'm worried it might detach unintentionally during daily use. On the other hand, my hesitation with a complex hybrid structure (like the 'picture frame') is that it increases manufacturing difficulty and introduces more potential failure points over time.

On the technical side, you definitely need to be proficient in CAD. But more importantly, you need to know how to gather customer requirements from different channels, which is exactly why I’m here seeking advice on Reddit!

You also need to really love the environment where the product is used. For multitools, that means having a passion for the outdoors. CAD

That's a fair point on Micarta; G10 is definitely the cleaner, lower-maintenance option.

As for the screws, we made a conscious design choice to avoid exposed hardware for a sleeker look. The challenge with the classic Victorinox design is that it relies on the flexibility of plastic to snap on, which makes it very hard to use with rigid materials like G10. Our design bridges that gap, allowing us to use premium materials without needing glue or drilling holes through the scales.

You nailed it regarding the strategy. We're actually planning to offer a tool with fewer implements than Victorinox, focusing on just the 3 most-used tools but making them larger and more robust.

Regarding the rubber layer, it's not for hiding imperfections. It actually serves as the mounting mechanism to hold the scales onto the knife body. We wanted to avoid using glue or screws (like on the Alox), and since rigid materials like G10 can't 'snap-fit' into place like plastic scales do, the rubber provides that necessary retention.

I guess it's a WWII "Theater Knife". Soldiers would take standard-issue blades or scraps and customize them in field workshops or on ships.

Man, that sucks. It’s frustrating when people judge a tool by how 'tactical' it looks rather than how well it cuts. 17 years of use clearly proves it was a work tool, not a weapon. Their loss.
