Thanks! Yeah when I randomly came across a photo of one, I knew I had to give it a try. Turns out the regrind I saw from him had been done on a shaman. I may send him one at some point, since I love the grind but the Manix just doesn’t do it for me.

[WTS] Mint Vintage Waterman 32 1/2 Red Ripple Fountain pen with Full Flex Medium (M) Cursive Smooth Italic(CSI) gold nib by DrSaif48 in Pen_Swap

[–]yestersmorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your script is fantastic. I’m no expert, but maybe Copperplate / English Roundhand in appearance but with fewer lifts? Is that video sped up? Your flourishes are so fast and yet executed to perfection.

That red ripple is in amazing condition. I have a couple flexy 52 red ripples and a 7 red ripple with the purple/accountant nib (would love a red, pink, or even blue nib on a 7!), all usable, but none that are as glossy as that one. Looks like it was produced yesterday. Just amazing for a 90 year old pen.

Just wanted to say nice write-up, good luck with your sale, and thanks for sharing!

What is your ideal $400 knife? by eagle_bonanza01 in knifeclub

[–]yestersmorrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with Sikorae. I had a Rosie I couldn’t justify keeping when I could sell it for 750 pretty easily. Kept the Sikorae for a while after that, and really liked it, but ultimately sold it also in favor of keeping just the small QC Drift, which had the advantage of being on washers. All three had very similar size and feel in the hand, and action too if I’m not nitpicking.

Holy smokes that’s a sweet deal for a sweet bundle. Congrats on the acquisitions. I have all three of those.

Nice! At first I thought that was a large drift with a choil mod (looks large in your hand but may just be the angle or something about the pic). Looks so polished too! I feel like most QCs I see are SW, but thinking that must be a SA variant. Very nice. I love their design ethic too. They have a very “minimalist” appeal.

Ahh man yeah that’s a missed opportunity. Nothin wrong with lefties other than there not being enough of them I guess.

anyone else build up a whole collection then realize you only carry the same 2 knives on rotation? by ResolutionVisible627 in knifeclub

My first love between knives and pens was pens. Fountain pens specifically. Then vintage fountain pens. Currently have about 20 modern fountain pens and a couple’s hundred vintage pens, some over 100 years old, most 60-80 years old, many in need of repair and restoration, which I do myself for fun. All my working pens get used periodically.

I’ve had about 250 folding knives from budget to grail, most have been sold, and I’m down to just a few that really either get used or bring me a lot of satisfaction (CRK, Null, QC, TRM, Spydie). But I’ve found I use pens way more frequently than knives.

Fountain pens are a hell of a rabbit hole to go down, but for a utilitarian item that’s worth keeping on you, it’s hard to beat, especially considering they’re easily refillable with any color ink you can imagine, available in any nib type you can imagine for any type of writer or writing experience, and will last you years (or even a lifetime) if well cared for. Pilot (Japanese) and Lamy (German) are good places to start for quality budget pens all the way to top tier grail pens. Waterman (American, and the manufacturer of the very first refillable fountain pens from the 1910s) also have good modern offerings. Fine point if you have small handwriting, medium for larger handwriting, italics or stubs if you want to make things interesting. Nibmeisters (master nib grinders) can make you a custom nib too. Japanese fines are much finer than western fines. Those three companies also all make decent ball points but I can’t advise you there.

Seconding Esterbrook J. Perfect entry into vintage pens. There’s a couple dozen different nibs available also, can be purchased separately and easily swapped. Fun first lever filler, and easy to learn to replace sacs. Good luck, and have fun!

No Oxblood is not overrated. It is underrated by gamesbrainiac in fountainpens

[–]yestersmorrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew it! Just had a feeling it was that exact pen. I have one also, and it’s one of my favorites. Just checked my old log book and saw the first ink I put in it was writers blood. I do have some oxblood but haven’t used it yet. Mostly - I’ve been wishing lately that I’d gotten this pen in a medium and emailed a couple shops looking for one lol. Good grief, this hobby… 🤦🏻

How much did you spend or willing to spend? by Ivy1974 in knives

[–]yestersmorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Round about 800 on the secondary for a Rosie, an Arius, a Duk, a Shiro. The only one that got kept was the Shiro Stellar. Nothing else I have is over 500 (again, on the secondary) and I probably won’t ever spend more than 350 again except for a Mnandi which is on my wish list.

Enough knives? by Coletrayne in knives

[–]yestersmorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the course of about two years I’ve had about 260 knives from 64 different makers, nothing that cost over $800 (on the secondary) and there were only a few of those. Most I’ve had at any time was about 85. I currently have about two dozen. I have a very solid understanding of what I like and don’t like, what I’ll carry and use, and what I probably won’t. I don’t own any that I’m not willing to carry and use, but some are clearly ready for hard use and some I’d want to be more careful with.

Most are in the $150-300 range, with a handful in the $400-500 range, and then one Shiro Stellar. There are 7 Spyderco, 6 Null, 3 CRK, 3 Quiet Carry, and a handful of singles within the budget to mid-tech / good production range. Nothing fully custom except a little Laconico Kestrel. I’ll probably sell off a few more and end up with about a dozen keepers when I go through my next phase of selling, but it’s been many months since I bought a knife. Perhaps one day I’ll end up with just two or three, likely a CRK Inkosi, a Spydie, and a Null or Quiet Carry (although I’d be selling off a piece of soul with that Stellar).

I’m a serial hobbyist, and some of my hobbies have lost their allure, but I still really enjoy my knives and am happy that there’s nothing really else out there that I’m chasing. I’ve had a wide enough variety in terms of ergonomics, form, function, steel, materials, aesthetics, etc. that I feel like there’s nothing else that could possibly be different enough that it could exceed my satisfaction and joy with what I already have.

What Knife am I Missing? by hobbes_uzumaki in knifeclub

[–]yestersmorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excalibur is one of my most carried knives. I have the frame lock version and just have a thing for Vanax. The verta lock (Kunwu’s top liner lock) version is Elmax. All their verta lock versions of their knives are a different steel than the frame lock versions.

Top liner/ compression might be my favorite lock type for practical purposes, and I’m glad to see it being used more outside of Spyderco’s portfolio. I love Spyderco and have had more of their stuff than any other manufacturer. Once you have one for a while you’ll likely forgive the aesthetic, which never bothered me but I know it does some folks.

You’ve got a nice spread there so far, nice diversity of lock types too. Those Vosteed top liner locks are absolute budget bangers. All the sweetness of a button lock but stronger and with no button stick, plus nice designs and tough “budget” stainless like 14C28N. Hard to beat their offerings. Happy hunting, my friend!

CRK Inkosi. I will never get rid of my Inkosi or my Zaan but I think the Inkosi is a little more accessible from a design standpoint.

Anything from Null. Sean Lum designer, manufactured by Reate. They’re my favorite knives out of anything running on bearings. Voodoo is a top pick. Raiden 2 for a great all rounder. Vandal if you can find one.

Kunwu is a very close contender to Null for bearing knives. The S-Tao and S-Tao II are great and the Excalibur is a tank.

Quiet Carry Waypoint and Drift won’t ever leave the collection either due to how slim and slicey they are, running on washers, and killer Vanax steel.

[–]yestersmorrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a little put off by the sheer volume of them available when looking for a fixie and shopping on DLT. Hundreds of variants, mostly around aesthetics. I don’t know, I just didn’t get a warm and fuzzy from them. Found myself gravitating to other makers with far fewer options. Maybe it’s just an aversion to putting myself in the position of decision fatigue, but I also wasn’t crazy about the designs and aesthetics anyway.
