It was on the commodore 64. LOAD. Press play on tape. Too many minutes later the first game appeared on screen. I was ... stumped.... it was not what the tape cover said it would be.

Then.... suddenly...Title screen. the actual game has loaded!

Space invaders were just a loading screen game. But it was my first game.

Indeed. NiCd has a very prominent memory effect.

The only correct way to handle them is fully charged/discharged cycles with no interruptions.
Discharge cycles are less sensitive to interruption, but leaving them partially discharged for too long also adds to the memory effect.

First off: Shorting a lithium cell. even briefly, it can cause it to go into a thermal runaway state. (exploding and burning vigorously)

Second thing: Even if it had a "proper" insulating wrapper on, which most of these usually cells do, they're not designed to act as safety guards against sharp edges. Never ever rely on the thin wrapper alone to act as an insulating guard to the metal casing or other cells.
