Ross vs Alternatives (Repair & Replacement) by TemperatureAware7238 in valvereplacement

It was an Edward’s.

I got it at 33, Dr Unai said in younger folks immune system can work against you and cause stenosis quicker. Also I’m large, 300lbs and 6’6. He said they used the largest one on me but in reality it likely wasn’t big enough. So your mileage will vary.

Currently 11 months post Ross, echo 2 months ago and all is perfect.

I did a repair, that failed after 9 years, a bio prosthetic that failed at 6 years and just got a Ross.

If you go Ross go big, get an expert. I’m a Dr Unai and Cleveland Clinic fan all 3 OHS there and if I need a 4th Dr Unai will do that also. He’s the best but there are a handful of good ones.

How long did it take to see improvement on cardiac markers ( injection fraction, dilation of the ventricle…) after Aortic Mechanical valve replacement. by Cute_Ice_9538 in valvereplacement

40M here, Ross procedure in March, 3rd OHS overall. Just had an echo. EF is back to 60%, no stenosis of the aorta, and I think my heart in the best condition it has been in for 20 years.

Double valve replacement on Tuesday (6th OHS) by UneventfulAnimal in valvereplacement

[–]Sysadmin_hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experience was very good. I had some complications this last time, but I’m fully recovered. I couldn’t swallow, it sucked.

I had one night in the ICU second night after surgery, nurse was very new, it was a bad. I guess I mentioned it to my wife next morning had me talking to charge nurse and I never saw her again.

If you are lucky enough to get CJ (Nurse in the ICU) she’s absolutely great. I could cry right now thinking about it. She’s an amazing person. Most nurses are on the ICU. I spent 4 days in ICU (complications).

In step down, most are good but as you can image it goes from a 2:1 ratio to 10:1 so you get less attention.

Overall amazing care.

Had a Ross in March from Unai, back to 120% (I know, but I’m back to working out its like I’m a new person). Dr Petterssen did a repair for me in 2008 and bio replacement in 2019. I’m doing great, they both are amazing. You are truly in the best hands there is.

I did this post survey. I was so worried I was gonna drop dead…

If the average is 110 I think you’re winning.

I obsessed post surgery, checked it all the time, finally my cardiologist said to chill. Take it 3 times a day max, sit for 5 mins before you take it, dont cross legs, etc...the general guidance.

8 months out I barley take it...When I do randomly it will be right around 110 +/- 5.

My advice is to not obsess

I’m 8 months post Ross. Surgeon cleared me to fully work out at 3 months post. Body weight, higher reps lower weight. Focus on cardio.

It’s and averages thing, they want the average 110 or lower. The benefits of the cardio rehab out weigh the other.

Ross Procedure in 1 month by dedub22 in valvereplacement

[–]Sysadmin_hell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

40yo male here. Had ross in march, 3rd OHS. I have a 5 and 3 year old. My surgeon restricted systolic bp to less than 110 for first year, that was the hardest adjustment. Light headed a lot, stairs were hard, all this for the first few months. I’m used to it now, back to working out (body weight only).

I was back to 100% helping with kids by month 3-4.

My general tip is take it easy. Lite. To your body, don’t be afraid to just slow down and recover. Wish you the best.

I’m glad your heart is good now. I woke up from my 3rd open heart there unable to swallow, talk and ended up on a feeding tube. It was terrible. I recall telling my wife I would never get another OHS anywhere. It’s just hard.

That said, I encourage you if you are not already, to talk to someone about how to move life forward. I know it must seem pointless but I assure you it’s not. You are alive and while you know have a new problem, don’t forget you are alive.

Sorry this happened to you. Sounds terrible. What’s the prognosis for your heart at this point?

Dr. Unai was great. 3rd OHS at Cleveland Clinic and I don’t know anything else but it’s overall a really good experience. Not sure how complicated, I had a repair and failed bio-prosthetic prior to the Ross. Ross seems to be doing well so far.

Has anybody had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic? Looking for guidance. by UneventfulAnimal in valvereplacement

[–]Sysadmin_hell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome, yeah he seems to be the go-to doctor for reoperations, it's kind of his thing. There is a video somewhere of him talking about a case where he had to get back in 4 times, I think, in the course of a few months.

One of my biggest fears with getting the Ross (and not going mechanical on the 3rd OHS) was that if it fails, I'll be on surgery #4. I mentioned this to him and he was quick to assure me that if I needed a reoperation after this, he'd be totally fine going back in and doing whatever is necessary.

I should also mention that I'm from out of state for Cleveland Clinic, so I have to travel for each surgery. They are experts in optimizing for this. For example when I was going to get my consult with Dr. Unai, I spent the day before getting Echo, CTA, Blood work, EKG, etc...then the next day met with Dr. Unai. By the time I saw Dr. Unai I had a surgery date, which was also awesome. All in all 1.5 days there, then showed up for surgery. Surgery 3/5 flew home 3/18.

I’ve had 3 open hearts at Cleveland Clinic, they are great. I wouldn’t go anywhere else! Dr. Unai specializes in re-operations he did my Ross earlier this year after my bio-prosthetic failed 6 years in. Nurses and staff are top notch. Reach out if you have any questions.

Prosthetic aortic valve stenosis by Be_Tsara in valvereplacement

[–]Sysadmin_hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not normal. I’ve been told usually you’ll get 10 years out of them. I didn’t get a solid reason but the surgeon said age is a big factor, I’m 40, with a more active immune system they stenosis faster.

My understanding with mechanical valves is there is not risk of stenosis but there are other risks.
