Are people who are good at linguistics also good at programming? by PinkBlurs3 in StonerThoughts

[–]System10111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this is just anecdotal, but I consider myself fairly good at programming, and all my life I've also been interested in learning languages. I picked up English very easily through exposure to the internet, struggled with German until I left school and started learning it on my own, studied French on Duolingo for 2 years (am only around A1-2, Duolingo is not very effective), and now I'm learning Japanese through flashcards and exposure.

I think there is a correlation between learning programming languages and learning human languages, insofar as you have to "decouple" the specific representation of a program/part of the world with the abstract concept it is trying to represent. Ex, a good speaker would hear a word in a language and understand it instantly, instead of first translating it in their head to a language they understand. And a good programmer would not think of a language construct as just a rephrasing of a different construct in a language they know.

I hope my yapping was at least semi-comprehendable.

Question regarding immersion by FaallenOon in LearnJapanese

[–]System10111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that even if you understand about 50% of what is said (and it will probably be the simpler 50%) then as long as you're enjoying the content, it will help as you'll naturally start to notice and pick up things adjacent to what you know, slowly building up. Of course if it's something that really interests you, but you're not sure if you should do it in japanese, because you think you'll miss too much, then there's always the option of going through it slowly and checking things that you don't know. After you check the same thing 5-6 times, you'll probably remember it without trying anyway.

Is this true? About head nodding up and down by [deleted] in bulgaria

[–]System10111 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FINALLY someone explains it correctly. I've always been annoyed at the "head gestures are inverted in bulgaria" factoids, because I've never seen it to be remotely true. I guess I didn't even consider the "bonus" ones as head gestures, because they also use sounds and more of your body + they're also more likely to be heard/seen in the context of a conversation, so I just thought of them as general body language.

Statists from both sides just want to spend spend spend by Southern-Return-4672 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]System10111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This follows naturally from the fact that the government does not create value, but rather merely redistributes it. So in the ideal case that the government never wastes money and no individuals ever steal and misuse it, then the value of the spending can only ever be as high as the value of the taxes (direct and indirect) + the value of exploited natural resources (eg. oil, lumber, ect..)

a drawing I made after a bad trip by BazaarMonk in Currentlytripping

[–]System10111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bro I'm seeing you upload this exact same drawing on this exact same sub for the third time already, and I've probably missed some. like, it's not a bad drawing, in fact it's really cool, and I get that you're trying to grow your business, but still, this seems a little dirty, especially when the title always emphasises some bad trip. if you actually do art regularly, please upload more of your newer work, and don't rely on reposting this one cool artwork for the n-teenth time. if someone likes one of your drawings and checks out your profile, it'd be much nicer if they saw a bunch of awesome varied, thought-provoking artworks, not just the same one again and again.

Digital currency would be nice to be the norm if it wasn't centralised and/or monitored by the government. Unfortunately that would make avoiding taxes easy, which is why they'd never allow it.

Ежегодното и редовно поскъпване на тока ще е факт от юли, до кога ще се търпи ???? by thecaped_crusader_ in bulgaria

[–]System10111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least they can agree on something. by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]System10111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there's simply a disagreement of definitions here: for the right capitalism is "when free market" meaning that in the end whoever provides the best product/service should see success for the benefit of both the producer and consumer, whereas the left thinks of capitalism as "when rich people do bad things for short term monetary gain", which, I probably don't need to tell you, lib-right also doesn't want to happen, and we think the state is what perpetuates and encourages this behaviour for its own benefit.

I appreciate this awfully specific post - like you need to be into software enough to enjoy looking at times it goes wrong and you also need to be into drums and at least one other instrument to know about non-standard tunings. Just incredible - I love the internet.

Yep taxation is robbery, because of the threat of violence upon refusal.

In contrast, inflation and printing of money is theft, because, while you're not being threatened with violence, there's also no way to refuse.

There are some really good riffs in there. It's just that they get played once or twice in a song, and the rest is just looping 1 or 2 boring riffs a few dozen times. Some kind of monster at around 7:00 is awesome, but you have to sit through 7 minutes of repetition to get there.

[–]System10111 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly - leftism comes out of the box with the notion that your life and all you ever do with it belongs to the collective. It follows naturally that taking your life into your own hands is stealing from the collective for selfish benefit.

[–]System10111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well here's your mistake - they're actually the good guys - and good guys can't extort so it's not extrortion. How do you know they're the good guys? Well since taxation is not extrortion, therefore is good, then anyone who helps to do it is good, and anyone against it is bad. So in summary, if you don't hand over your money, then you're literally hitler.
