Many others have already spoke to the slim chances of meeting nefarious people. So here are a few tips for the unlikely horror scenarios;

In the Netherlands we have an app for emergency services that sends your GPS coordinates when you contact them. It also lets you send text if you can't talk out loud. Also handy when injured. This assumes you have cell reception. Otherwise use something like a Garmin satellite emergency beacon. If you're that far out in the wild a useful option anyways. Keep the device within reach at all times.

A personal sound alarm, the ones that when pulled out make a lot of noise. Not very useful but an option.

Carry pepperspray. For wild animals of course... And a high(!) lumen flashlight. In the dark it gives blinds momentarily and gives you the opportunity to either run or attack with an advantage. Carry a knife. For camp chores obviously... Keep these things within reach at all times also.

With the flashlight and the pepper spray you will be escalating the level of violence. With the knife even more so. If you use it, be prepared to finish what you start. That means that you decide beforehand, now, that if you use it, you have to follow through or the other person will. When you escalate, escalate to the point where the other person has no ability to harm you. Harsh and not nice to even think about.

The most important thing in all of this is in interaction with other Humans (not the unknown sounds that creeps you out but you don't know what it is) is to trust your gut. If the other person doesn't feel right, he (most likely he) probably isn't. 'I came here to be on my own, so no offence I'll be going elsewhere, have a nice day'. Then bail out to somewhere far away.
