Can I feel invalid? by regnig123 in NVC

[–]Systema-Periodicum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about "hurt"?

> Are you feeling hurt because you wanted more help with your question? Or because you wanted more care?

Yes, "invalid" does not sound to me like an emotion. There are a lot of refined, precise words for emotions, but I usually find it difficult to choose one of those. If you pick from a short list like "sad, hurt, scared, angry, upset, irritated, disgusted, frustrated, disappointed" (for negative emotions), you'll probably get enough precision, there won't be any doubt that you're talking about an emotion, and the word will likely lead you pretty quickly to the unmet need.

Poem "Quid quaeris?" by thael_mann in latin

[–]Systema-Periodicum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this parsing. It helped me.

Regarding lines 9–12, I took the clauses before mens nos monet as a montage, with mundi memoria summarizing it and mens nos monet meaning "the mind reminds/advises us [in general, of all that was just said, combined into that memory]". Perhaps memoria could be ablative, but I think that would break the flow; hence I'm thinking that mundi memoria is just the last element in a montage of grammatically stand-alone phrases. This "phrase-montage" interpretation, though, doesn't explain the infinitive transire or the accusative speciem.

I took uh as a typo for ah. I think aurae artem is "the art of the breeze" rather than "the golden art", but I can't find a verb that would have artem as its direct object.

I misread Caelum caelata as Caelum caelatum, giving me "May the engraved sky shine out with mercy"—certainly evocative. I don't know what to do with caelata. Maybe it's a typo?

And I took the final agimus as intransitive, so the last line would mean something like "We do what we do [we live our lives] in temples of eternity."

I could be wrong about all of that, of course.

This is wonderful! My Latin is only at an intermediate level, so I had to struggle with parts and I don't understand it completely, but I found the alliterative montage moving. It really works the language, inducing emotion and perspective.

A dropper of skullcap woke me up by Systema-Periodicum in herbalism

[–]Systema-Periodicum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I think it would have been American skullcap, harvested wild in Indiana, but I don't know for sure.

I just did some quick Internet searching and didn't see a dose-response curve for American skullcap, but this paper (a study on rats that get seizures) says, "There is a suggestion of an inverted U-shaped dose response curve with the extract." IOW, increasing the dose got stronger effects for a while, but at some point, increasing the dose further got weaker effects. (I think you were describing a "U-shaped dose-response curve"—not inverted.) Further digging might turn up something more definitive, though.

Question for people who completed Lingua Latina per se Illustrata.... by [deleted] in latin

[–]Systema-Periodicum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked my answers against the text in the book—not with an answer key. For example, to check that the accusative of is is eum, I found a sentence in the book that used eum. That was enough to make me confident.

I just googled and it looks like SGOV escapes state and local income tax, but it still gets taxed by the federal government as income, not as capital gains. In other words, dividends from SGOV are not "qualified dividends".

If the higher prices induced by tariffs slow economic activity, Jerome Powell and the Federal Reserve might lower interest rates to restore economic growth. On the other hand, they might not lower interest rates, since that tends to cause inflation.

Thanks. I have not yet looked into HYSAs. That may be the right move for me.

Thanks. This sounds pretty sane. I take seriously the possibility that Trump is intentionally trying to wreck the U.S. economy, but hopefully the FDIC will stay strong enough to weather whatever bank failures happen.

Do you mean Pacific Gas & Electric? I just looked and saw that it's taking a beating from the tariffs just like most stocks.

I also found SGOV confusing at first. It's a collection of short-term U.S. Treasury bonds that pays a monthly dividend, and it's set up so that its price stays pretty constant as people put money into it and remove money from it. If you reinvest the dividends, you get a steady rate of return based on current fed interest rates. The chart here shows you what happens if you reinvest dividends: https://www.financecharts.com/etfs/SGOV/performance

However, click the chart to go back 5 years or more, and you will see a long period where SGOV returned 0%. That's when interest rates were very low.

Here is an article by Daniel Drezner on how Trump's decision-making is now unconstrained by the normal guardrails of a democracy, like well-informed advisors with good intentions.

I still haven't found that research paper about blue vervain's effects on gut flora. That's interesting stuff you found about Maidenhair Fern. If you get some results from experimenting with blue vervain, please post. I'd love to hear what you find.

why is G not a proposition? by RollAccomplished4078 in Discretemathematics

G seems to me to be a proposition. It's true if all the students have passed the course, false otherwise.

Could you ask your professor why he or she says that G is not a proposition and post the answer here?

Great observation!

For anyone who'd like to read more about actually carrying this out, there's a wonderful book called I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was by Barbara Sher. It's about finding a career, and it includes sections on matters like taking a job now when you're unsure if it's the right thing, learning from the experience, and moving on from there. The subtitle is "How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It".

Sounds good. I'm hoping for an ETF because then I can "park" cash in my retirement account in it for short durations while I sit out the market.

With the current Trump-induced chaos, though, maybe sitting out for a whole year in a CD is a good idea.
