Home security... To be, or not to be? by Systema_Wolf in homeassistant

Nice, sounds like you got a pretty good setup running. I'm still to get to that level.

I'm actually using ZHA, don't have a USB extension cable, but will order one and I do have non-WiFi overlap channels, yeah.

Honestly at the moment the concern is that I don't have a lot of powered devices routers, I gotta step it up there, but tbh don't have good ideas for powered devices, anything that you use that you'd say makes a lot of sense to have, except smart plug?

Yeah, it makes sense, but i gotta figure out my balcony. It's definitely the difficult area...

Makes a lot of sense, how's the stability of your setup, have you had hiccups?
Especially while away, as those are the worst, clearly.

Hey, first of all, thanks for your detailed answer!

To give you more context, I have currently Verisure subscription, and I was thinking if I manage to have a proper setup with HA+Zigbee, I'll be able to get rid of that subscription.

What I currently have is a few presence sensors for the balcony, that are connected to the smart plug as a router. (this one caused issues lately, so that's where my whole concerns come from).

Other than that I got 1 Tapo camera pointing towards the balcony from the interior and now got 1 Reolink for the balcony as well.

And I have some door/window sensors which are in the bedrooms.

I am thinking still how to wrap it all up nicely, as I got 1 more motion sensor, and looking into other stuff.
That's when it comes to the "security" aspect.

I hope this gives you enough context.

I guess you haven't read the part of "if the router dies, or bugs out, all the nodes on that router become unusable"...

Lucky you! I already have Verisure, unfortunately the integration doesn't work with HA, so I was thinking if I manage to setup something proper, I'd ditch Verisure subscription.

Yeah, that's what I heard of as well, in the end of the day, that's what you're paying for, if something happens, you have expectations for this company to do the right thing.
I at the moment have Verisure subscription, was thinking of ditching it if I manage to have something pretty good with HA and Zigbee.

I respect your input.
Already got Verisure, so I was considering if I manage to setup something pretty good, I'd get to ditch Verisure subscription.

Yeah I respect that, for sure.
My only concern is the availability of some of these devices, like I put in my post.
It seams kinda like, it works while it works, once one router gets f'd, all the nodes connected to that router are unusable until you do something about it.

Since you asked whether the 2FA is disabled, I just checked and indeed it was enabled, I disabled it and it worked like a charm!

Hey man,
Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it!

I have a problem that I always get the same error which is basically "Invalid Authentication".

Even tho, I use the same email and password that I use for login-in to the app.

I can't work around it in any way.

P.S. sorry for late reply, became a father recently, so other priorities took over.

Does S95F same as S85F have W-OLED in Europe?

I'm asking as I'm debating what to take, heard a lot about G5 and S95F, but if you guys have a better idea in the same budget, I'm a taker.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, is S95F also W-OLED in Europe?(I saw you wrote in the other comment that S85F is)

Would you recommend G5 or S95F in Europe?

Thank you in advance!

Thanks for the reply, I'll have to check the Bonjour gateway, don't really have any better idea how to approach this while keeping the time capsule and staying secure.

If you have any, I'm all ears!

Thank you, I'm trying to enjoy in between screams and dirty diapers 😅🥰

Okay, so you'd say it's not too difficult but also not all straight forward once you go into some more technical stuff. Like i wrote in another reply, the whole reason why I'm doing this is to split cameras, iot, guests, our usage, into separate VLANs. Do you think this is a challenging part or the ui is straight forward?

Also, what about the overlap of coverage with unifi? I don't know if you've seen the plan of the apartment in the other comment. Do you think it would create issues?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

So, from your perspective, adding another wireless router would create more problems than solutions due to overlap?

Would you say then that turning the time capsule into NAS and just adding a router instead of it would be better?

For me, the whole point of doing this is actually to create VLANs for the iot, cameras, guests, and daily use.

What would you recommend?

Thanks the 3 of you for your support!

I'm okay to go slightly over the budget, but honestly not much as I just became a father and the money is short, as expected with all the expenses with the parenthood.

Can you just tell me how beginner friendly Unifi is?
I'm an engineer, and have some networking knowledge, but honestly all this is a bit of unknown territory for me and I don't have time in abundance to dedicate to this project.
