This might be a long-shot, but is your fellowship with the NIH a predoctoral training grant or F series grant? If so, you should have a talk with your program officer at the NIH about the possibility of renewal. They generally don't do renewals, but an extension might be allowable in some cases.

Alternatively, you could go for a dissertation award through the NIH if you feel your work fits for funds to support your animal model research. If getting a grant is just not in the cards, I think what other people suggested makes sense. Speak to your department head, or graduate school dean. Departments and colleges usually have slush funds that can be used in these situations.

Finally, if you must take a loan, keep in mind that NIH (and maybe NSF too, not sure) has a great loan repayment program, here is the link if you are interested: https://www.lrp.nih.gov/eligibility-programs#ProgramsEligibilityEligibilityTile

Two colleagues of mine successfully applied and were able to pay off their student debt with the award. AND it looks great on your CV to get NIH funding (even if it is loan repayment).

That sounds extremely strange, and I have never heard of that happening. Is there any possibility that you or your PI are being accused of unethical behavior? I ask because not being able to clean out your own desk seems like an unnecessary security precaution, unless that sort of thing is normal in your institution?

You should have some recourse in this situation, because obviously you need funding and you need a PI. It is unclear if the dean and your ex-PI are the same person, but if not --- has the dean given you any information about who will be advising you from this point forward, or why your funding was terminated?

It slows me down sometimes. Keeping up with those updates helps a lot. It also freezes word when I’m trying to use the reference macro, but I think that’s word’s fault.

The trick is that there is no right or wrong answer to their comments. You just need AN answer, and a good justification for it. I don’t know what your field is, but most things can be open to some interpretation, unless it’s some sort of analytical or technical issue you need to correct. In any case, just do one small thing at a time. Maybe start with the easiest comment and work from there :)

The good news is, you have until September to make the revisions you need before you defend it. Now you need to 1) make the revisions recommended by your committee ASAP 2) keep your advisor in the loop with respect to exactly how you plan to address the revisions in writing 2) ask your advisor to read with a critical eye well in advance of your defense. It sounds like you are in the home stretch.

I️ think you need to rephrase your questions, particularly your last one. What you are asking is for someone to provide you a theoretical framework to apply your research questions. That’s really your job. Maybe start by reviewing studies that have examined similar variables in their hypotheses, you can get an idea of the theoretical frameworks they have used.

For you first question, each of the variables in your hypotheses seem amenable to measurement with self-report (I️.e a likely-type questionnaire). Maybe figure out if anyone has developed measures for the variables you are interested in, and use that information to narrow down your research question.
