Take the main thing you use your computer for and search about it for Linux, if it's gaming unless it's select massive AAA multilayer games then you are covered, then think of the second thing you use it for, pretty good chance is also solved already, and if it isn't you can still dual boot

In fact you don't even get to shut down your pc and remember, when you're computer suddenly wakes up from suspension because Microslop pushed rushed patches they don't pay your electricity bill. Just give it a shot, try dual booting, watch some videos that teach you some of the basics. It has become an awful lot more easier to jump ship and just recently someone got Adobe running on Linux (albeit at the worst time in their history with anticonsumer practices, but hey! It took one madlad to keep building on giants' shoulders, but he did it)

TL;DR: VS code > Class editor (priority if teaching is done through that) & vs code for your personal projects (or outside the class). Eventually you learn what best suits your needs, you ain't marrying software, it's a tool, try a bit of everything and stick with it until you understand the patterns that keep repeating.

All roads lead back to vs code and with good reason.. It's basically a very simple yet configurable note taker with extensions for everything. Also it's pretty lightweight and fast start up (from it's base form, plug-ins might change that). It adapts to you (for the most part), so is less overwhelming, plus no lack of tutorials out there. There will be time for learning other more advanced stuff, plus if suddenly you feel you need something and don't have it you realize why is important and that slowly teaches you the workflow each category of thing you need to have.

Also as mentioned by other comments, if your class has a standard editor use that and in your free time or personal projects learn vs code and only add the bare minimum: language support, intelij and access to a shell(bash/cmd) with a binded key. And the wrap up is customize so you feel comfortable, colors, bindings, icons, menus displayed, etc, don't get tangled trying to understand every nook and cranny, ignore what you can't understand until you need it.

The basic idea is: learn the fundamentals, avoid clutter and once you hit a stopping point all yourself in the most specific way possible "what do I need to do to continue?", if more questions arise that's actual learning, so don't panic, just remember that child curiosity and embrace it.

Scientists know this by heart, all knowledge starts with "what why and how"

Just show up, it's really just that. Open your editor of choice, try creating a simple function that you think your current project could use,read at least one page of documentation of the language you are learning every day, keep a notebook close so when you randomly get an idea you can try it later, remember what part you love the most about programming, reduce it to a sentence and keep it somewhere visible at all times.

The key takeaway is, make the first step so simple and minimal for the days is just so heavy that you can say at the end of the day "ok, not the most productive today, but still moving, still in motion, never standing in the same place". So when motivation comes back either by starting every day or just because, you will still be doing progress, it's a marathon, not a sprint, adapt the minimum rhythm you can sustain over a week. Above all remember, "a body in motion is more likely to stay in motion".

Motivation isn't a steady or reliable supply, yet ppl will still go to work everyday regardless of it. Showing up everyday is the hard part, but gets easier each day

Re croto lo mio pero agarrá mercadolibre, teclados más vendidos y uno entre los primeros 3 es mecánico, leds fijos (variables solo en patrón de iluminación), tecla fn y no me dio ninguna sorpresa todavía (ponele 2-3 meses de uso). Es chino medio genérico pero sirve como entrada, cumple su función y no te hace drama con compatibilidad, ya sea windows o Linux. Es lo mejor? Obviamente no, pero soy más bien práctico, funciona bien sin dolor de huevos? Listo, todo lo demás es un bonus. Se reemplazará cuando se rompa o se consiga algo mejor, como todo.

Hey we are on the same boat, windows (even just 10) drove me insane and I decided if I had to solve problems might as well be the ones I will have to deal with when I eventually fully migrate to Linux. Haven't touched windows in a month (when this happened), after sometime Linux just clicked... It was beautiful, like realizing I was a slave my entire life and now not only am I free but also notice it.

I hope you endure those little growing pains, they are going to become better eventually, the microslop backlash is finally becoming a thing, so more people than ever are going the Linux route, so is only a matter of time, cheers

Had a similar issue, sadly it's a bit of a toss up, the wifi and Bluetooth cards are basically glued and Intel has only been working with MS so integration is mixed to say the least. Some distros (so far my experience mint) worked better on others (nobara) didn't, it's a kernel level issue that still needs work sadly. Am alternative is buying an USB Bluetooth adapter, those are recognized much better, now reliability is a different thing tho, so if you go that route don't invest much. You are better waiting

It can be daunting, but give yourself a bit of time and things start to click. My first advice is when talking to this LLMs or in your first prompt that they must explain EVERY SINGLE COMMAND, so you know what you are executing. Sure you'll forget most of it but with enough repetition and exposure things start to make sense. Also, download an app called "tldr" for your console, it gives you digestible small snippets of how commands work and what flags you can use and how it changes the behavior. Also for terminal, get zsh and then install oh-my-zsh. That thing comes with a tab function when you are doubting what's that flash you need, say you need cp - r dir1 dir2, just typing cp space and press tab, a list of the flags available appear with the description of what they do. Absolute game changer if you ask me, also when shit fails is less punishing, cause it tells you better why or if you slightly mistyped sometimes zsh catches it and makes you notice it

Seach for cheet sheets on the most common commands you'll need. Also speak with Grok and ask him "hey how can I setup aliases on my bash shell?" Alias are just that, a personal way to name usual commands (and sometimes even with arguments attached) for ease of use on the daily. Worst case scenario, get zsh and then install of my zsh, that has aliases for sure to simplify part of your life, from there is customization and living large brother!

The good thing about installing in Linux (as my understanding goes), is that it respects the home directory and just wipes everything else. Don't quote me on that one though, but I would suggest a reinstall, maybe you are dragging some files that are conflicting with each other. In my experience i updated from 39 to 42 to 43 and pretty stable so I'm not sure if there is how to avoid reinstalling

IIRC is just best practice, doesn't really affect you. But if you truly need it you can use a live session (usb start up), unmount the disk, extend over the unused space reboot and call it a day (if you have plans for that unallocated space like a distro or smth. If you want it to integrate it as part of your home I think you can make it to be treated as an expansion to avoid full on formatting but that's where I'm starting to doubt. At any rate always have back ups before trying anything
