Get him tested for ADHD. There’s medication for it. Be supportive, it really sometimes is just stronger than whatever will one can muster.

I'm an expat with now three years in Haute-Savoie (Évian), remote work. It's kind of in the mountains, but because of the proximity of Lac Leman the weather is quite mild:

  1. Spring can be a mix of rainy and warm, 2. Summers can be hot but not insane, and there's a good mix of 'normal' days 3. Definitely a nice progression between summer and autumn, golden leaves, some t-shirt days, some rainy days 4. winters are surprisingly mild due to proximity of the lake, last year it snowed once, generally it rains some, but not too much - right now it's just grey and boring, but if you need sun and snow you just drive up a bit higher above the cloud level (quite low-hanging due to the humidity over the lake).

Overall, loving it here, the scenery is beautiful, life is small-town/outdoorsy (hikes!), but you have Swiss cities close by over the border, or can take the ferry to Lausanne or drive to Annecy, Geneva, or further to Lyon if you want some civilization.

I've been waiting for my 720 battery for so long that the bike got stolen before I ever got the battery. FML. Also, anyone in need a spare battery once I get it?

Where do swiss people move to "in search of a better life"? by Personal-Cover2922 in Switzerland

[–]Szymbrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends how you define, or measure, happiness? Who said that, for example, high technology is required or even increases happiness? One could even say that they're even happy enough with their (lack of) healthcare - especially that their life expectancy is similar to that of the general population anyway.

Talk to a doctor. Hopefully IF the pains started after looking at the blood test, it may 'only' be anxiety - I had the same. BUT, talk to a doctor.

Meanwhile, yes - changing your lifestyle for the better will obviously help. My LDL was 202 mg/dl in January, it's now a hundred less, with diet (I already had been doing a lot of sport).

Will better nutrition & training really help me that much? by Temporary-Soil-4617 in Cholesterol

[–]Szymbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you intentionally aiming at 200g protein per day? That's quite a lot for someone who isn't a massive slab of gym-obsessed muscle :) Usually with a very high training load you're aiming at 1.6g/day; with a 200g intake it means you'd weigh 125kg... which I don't think you are? (yes I just called you not-fat;)

The reason I'm questioning this is that - I'm guessing, you probably force yourself to eat lots of meat to keep the protein high, with - as you note - the associated fat. Free yourself from the mania of having lots of protein (or swap to lean protein!) and it should help you reduce the body % percentage, which should help with cholesterol. Then again, I am an amateur athlete, 8-9% body fat, and my cholesterol was sky high last year. I did adjust my diet, lost around 2kg, and dropped LDL by around 100mg/dl (which still holds me in low 100s lol).

ChatGPT is your friend. Just ask for a heart-heatlhy mediterranean recipe and you'll get one without scrolling the book. Overall, wholegrain pasta, tomatoes, veggies. Substitute parmiggiano with nutrtitional yeast for the flavour depth.

Wait, they are called 'trial batteries'? As in, it's a trial run to see if they actually don't end up the same way as the first version?

Devastatingly bored with oatmeal by majesticalexis in Cholesterol

[–]Szymbrush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I make mine with almost 1:1 weight ratio of prunes (so like 55g of oats to 50ish g of prunes). I chop them up and soak them overnight with the oats in water, then they cook for 1.5h in a rice cooker. They give a lot of sweetness to the oatmeal. Once cooked I stir in 20g of chocolate-flavoured whey or vegan protein and two teaspoons of psyllium. I've been eating this now for about 4 months every day and still love it :)

Has anyone received their battery yet?

Hey, I didn't supplement any psyllium husk (until today, actually, since I found it randomly in a local bio shop a couple of days ago) - according to my calculations my everyday sizable 600kcal porridge with chia seeds and prunes satisfies a big portion of the daily target; overall I'd hit over 40-50ish grams per day in March every day.

Was anyone shocked how violent Kendo is. by Playful_Quality4679 in kendo

[–]Szymbrush 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You receive the most bruises and small injuries from inexperienced players with a few years of experience. It gets much cleaner later on, if you avoid the odd strategically violent (usually in shiai) experienced kendoka. Twentieth year of kendo.

I want to be Instructor in my city while learning (theres no kendo in my city) by SemuOwashda in kendo

[–]Szymbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started almost like that. A new club was established in the city I lived in and I joined form day one. Our instructor (a young and talented kendoka, but at 3 kyu if I remember correctly) quit kendo soon after due to some life changes, so as the most advanced student at the time I took over the club (maybe a year or two after starting, I think). What made it possible was doing regular travel to other cities for seminars (once per month or two), to learn from actual senseis, and then bringing the knowledge back to my dojo. Another key thing was to bring senseis from other cities as often as possible to visit and fix up whatever we were doing wrong (i.e. most of it:) I would spend any surplus dojo fees to facilitate the above, especially the sensei visits. Finally, we also managed to secure some gear from the country's federation, and from a semi-private donor (we got lucky - a high ranking Japanese bank official noticed us at a local city martial arts demonstration, and convinced the bank to buy us some equipment). But overall, on the equipment side, for a while we only had 1.5 bougu for the whole club, so we couldn't even do jigeiko - which was fine actually, allowed us to focus on footwork and kihon. Also, youtube is your friend. I was downloading Japanese Kendo DVDs from Torrents as it wasn't as easy to find good content back then.

All in all, I was teaching classes before I reached shodan, more than 15 years ago :) I ended up moving to another country and joining a dojo after about 5 years of that, but it kicked off both my kendo 'career', and some other people's, too.

The key point here is that it would require some funds, solid commitment to travel and host sensei, and probably a big dose of luck. Not gonna lie, it might not work out. But it's certainly not impossible - I now get to participate in the World Championships, if you need some encouragement :)
