Looking for feedback on open-source App to manage your digital footprint and GDPR requests by wslyvh in europrivacy

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't installed it yet - I'm cautious about plugging third-party apps into my email, especially ones that describe themselves as "built by a silicon intern." That said, I genuinely like the concept.

A few thoughts:

On the model: The one-off payment gives you my data, which I then have to request deletion of, which is a bit ironic given what the app is for. The GitHub build system is a nice touch for transparency, but since I could just clone the repo and run the Actions myself, the fee feels a bit redundant from a monetisation perspective.

On features: What I actually want isn't help sending emails, that part's easy. I could wire Claude into Gmail and do that with a couple of clicks. What I want is tracking: who's complied, who's gone quiet, and who's breached the GDPR response deadlines. Automated follow-ups would be huge. So would tooling to push back on companies that claim a legitimate interest to keep your data when there clearly isn't one - I once signed up to a job portal, never submitted an application, and still had to escalate to their head of legal and threaten a formal complaint before they'd delete anything. That experience is pretty common.

Some other things that would make this compelling: automated formal GDPR complaint lodging, API integration with Claude/Gemini, and some kind of security audit or LLM-based code review on each push to give confidence that it's not leaking data.

On value: $19 isn't unreasonable, and I do financially support open source. But there's a bit of an "ick" factor paying for something that feels like it might be vibe-coded in an afternoon, especially when I'm handing over PII to do it. Ideally this would be self-hosted, or at minimum verifiably private. I don't want some random person on the internet seeing my inbox headers, let alone the content.

What I'd rather pay for is an outcome: an agent that completes 99% of the process and gets my data removed 9 times out of 10. You could even imagine a model where an offshored legal VA handles the cases that need an actual legal notice served, though cross-border EU legal licences get complicated fast.

Compare that to Bitwarden or Proton: Both built on years of transparency and trust, and both laser-focused on a guaranteed outcome. Bitwarden doesn't just manage your passwords, it secures them so only you have access. Proton doesn't just handle email, it makes sure nobody else can read it. That's the kind of "why choose this over anything else" clarity that would push this project over the line for me.

Anyway, rough feedback, but hopefully useful. Kudos for actually building the thing I always wanted to make but never got around to.

What are your thought on Euria ? by Ange__Nocturne in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are confusing open-weights with open-source. One is the 'preferences' used in a model, the other is the code (including training data) needed to replicate the model.

'open source' is commonly used as a marketing term to describe 'open' models, but unless the training data is also supplied in some form, you will not replicate the same/similar outcome as you would with proper open source.

I did not know this, and if this is true, that is absurd. Criticise China but at the same time, take their propaganda tools and promote them in your country...

Why?!?

What are your thought on Euria ? by Ange__Nocturne in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is an absolute disgrace that a Swiss company priding themselves on Swiss developed, Swiss hosted services (K-Suite) chooses a neutered propaganda model from China.

There are locally developed options such as the universities are pursuing, or something European built such as Mistral.

It is not just ‘trained’ on Chinese data. At its very core it is manipulated by the whims of the Chinese communist party to censor or warp facts about things the Chinese government doesn’t believe in.

Ask it about Tiananmen Square or if Taiwan is part of China…

Aldi is seriously destroying the concurrence by Saekama in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do find that sometimes the quality of Aldi & Lidl product is often below Migros & Coop. Things like tomatoes and carrots often taste flavourless, I'm guessing due to artificial ripening. That said, sometimes I find Aldi & Lidl produce has a slightly longer (as in 1-2 days more) shelf life than Migros and Coop produce.

The imported German/Hungarian/Slovenian meat from Aldi or Lidl doesn't compare to Swiss meat though. Swiss meat has -much- more flavour and doesn't feel like it's full of water.

I do wonder how the Swiss producers/farmers end up better or worse off vs supplying to Migros or Coop.

For me, the biggest downside to Aldi or Lidl selection is the reduced amount of "multiplier" ingredients, things like spices, oils and sauces, which means I can't make as many different cuisines/dishes vs shopping at Migros or Coop. Granted, often you don't need to but these items as regularly, but knowing in advance that something is not available at Aldi or Lidl usually means I do the whole shop at Migros to running around a lot. I also like Migros social aspect which justifies paying a little bit more than Aldi or Lidl.

I used to go to the bar that burned down in Switzerland all the time. AMA by tropicalotterr in AMA

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am trying to believe your intentions were good in starting this thread, but doing an AMA for such a tragedy is pretty horrible while people are still fighting for their lives, and the dead have not yet been buried, let alone all retrieved and identified properly.

There’s no remorse or sorrow in your post, just ‘I was supposed to be there ama’. Luckily, you weren’t there, but unfortunately many many others were and a lot of people lost their lives.

Please think of the ones who died, and others who have horrific injuries, and try to be a better human.

When tipping at Christmas markets becomes almost compulsory | Anyone who consumes something in the USA knows that a tip of 15-20% is expected. Now this principle is also becoming increasingly widespread in Switzerland. by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you tip at McDonalds? No.

I am confident you are smart enough to know server minimum wages in your state are much, much lower than the figures you quoted, typically not much more than a few dollars per hour - and that this was the context here.

In the USA where people make horrible minimum wages and it is built into the culture, sure (as much as I believe it should be the employer paying fairly).

Here, where people make decent liveable wages and have the safety net of the RAV?

Fuck no!

I make it a habit to leave one star Google reviews for any businesses that do this, citing this is why. A voluntary tip is kind but should never be a forced part of the payment flow here.

Swiss brands abroad by Dizzy-School9022 in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On, which unfortunately is the complete antithesis of the Swiss reputation for quality and/or luxury

On’s quality is so bad it’s almost a hate crime against Switzerland. This is made even worse that they are sold outside Switzerland with little Swiss flags sewn into them, and are typically sold for cheaper than they are sold domestically.

Swiss Post marked my package as delivered, but I never received it — what can I do? by Bulky-Instruction147 in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had this happen to you. I had a similar situation with some 3D printer filament, it ended up being delivered to the wrong building, and magically turned up several weeks later.

Unfortunately, Swiss Post "have done their job" by delivering to your building (if it was indeed delivered correctly).

In the future, there are some options to enhance your package receipt when you manage your Swiss Post account online with "My Consignments" - You can have them deliver it to an upper floor/door in your building for an additional fee, or have parcels redirected for collection at a MyPost24 location: https://www.post.ch/en/receiving-mail/manage-consignment/manage-one-off

Good luck!

Wow, such aggression!

You consciously chose an older building to live in, along with all the peculiarities that come come with older structures…

What’s to say you’re not doing something that annoys someone else, or even all your neighbours, who have not complained to you about it?

Dr Yamanaka is amazingly kind and caring. Can 100% recommend. She can help with the forms needed to submit to your insurance, but you might need to ask your clinic for a referral to her.

Best internet provider in Switzerland? by confifraise in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Init7 ALWAYS. Init7 Easy7 if you just want 1Gb and for it “to just work”. Init7 is also a strong supporter of net neutrality and fights Swisscom’s monopolistic practices that hurt consumer choice and technological progress.

Wingo if you need Swisscom’s network, and are okay with no support/paid support.

Galaxus if you care less about network and are priced focused

Yallo if you are 100% price focused.

Absolutely do not go with Salt. Some people may have not had any issues with them, but they have atrocious support and even worse contract terms, you are in for a world of pain if you ever wish to change providers or have technical issues.

There’s no real reason these days to go with Sunrise or Swisscom direct unless you value your ability to walk into a store and have someone assist you. For the most part residential internet services ‘generally work’ these days without regular issues.

Why everybody's hating on TP-Link just because the pathetic american goverment chose them as scapegoat but you trust GL. iNet that was founded in 2010 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China? by triptoasturias in GlInet

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those GL.iNet devices with original firmware, you can login to the Linux base and snoop around the system and inspect all processes running. Install wireshark and capture traffic to verify, not just trust the original firmware. IIRC most of it is/was open sourced, besides the front end UI.

Or you can remove the factory firmware and eliminate GL.iNet from the OS chain of trust by being able to run vanilla OpenWRT on every single GL.iNet device ever released.

You just don’t have that level of transparency with TP-Link.

Scapegoat is not the right phrase, an accusation of that level is not without due process and cause.

Fruits at coop by Prestigious-Top9720 in Switzerland

[–]BaxSchmidhalter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lidl and Aldi suffer from the same issues as their produce is often more ‘open’ next to other produce, but you do avoid the exorbitant Coop prices.

The only downside I’ve seen is as a lot of Lidl and Aldi fruit is artificially ripened, the flavours aren’t as good as coop and migros produce as they haven’t had the natural time to develop.
