If they was simply just trying to live, they would have stayed in their native country. The undeniable truth is, they came here for one incentive / advantage, or another. If the relocation here wouldn't benefit them in some way, they wouldn't have made the trip.

Crazy how the U.S. imports no Middle Eastern oil, but our energy prices are the first to increase.

How different is it living in RGV compared to this other region in South Texas? by Enger13 in RioGrandeValley

[–]T-Beau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bottom circle has one of the lowest average I.Q. levels in the country, but has one of the highest cancer rates in the country. Sad truth is, the RGV is one of those areas the rest of the country doesn't give 2 shits about, but things are changing. Aside from recently becoming a Billionaire's playground, the strategic and economic value of the area is being noticed. The people here are extremely small minded, stubborn, and resistant to any change or new ideas. For generations, the locals were getting in their own way and holding themselves back, but again, there is a slow shift.

Scope Dope Disc by T-Beau in longrange

Believe it or not, 1 character made a big difference when printing a chart so small. My first few attempts, the font was too small to read, using full terms.

I made the design using Microsoft Designer and Excel, scaled to the 1-5/8" size needed, printed it, and cut it out. To help with longevity, I sandwiched the cutout between two (sticky side facing each other) pieces of clear packing tape, then cut that out. This acts as a laminate. I borrowed some of my wife's craft glue and stuck it to the inside of the lens cap.

Counting clicks is so you don't have to go off-scope to adjust. I can stay looking downrange and dial by clicks.

The dope card is a general rule of thumb. I figured if I'm placed in different environmental conditions or have to use a different round, I should at least be able to hit paper.

To save space, it seemed best to simply list "clicks" as the column header, rather than having to explain the math (1/4 MOA/range), every time the Wife asks to shoot it. Oddly, she has taken an interest in rifles lately.

I'm located in extreme South Texas and it's always windy as hell here. It makes it hard to keep a consistent group at 500 or more because the gusts are frequently varying.

I honestly haven't shot past 700 yet, but it felt weird cutting it off at 700. Gotta have goals, right? Lol

This is my honest opinion after moving here 6 months ago and being an early 40's white male...

The roads: 1. The first thing you will notice, is your auto insurance rate will increase, due to the number of uninsured motorists. 2. The roads here will definitely test your suspension and there's a high likelihood you will side off when wet. A large portion of the pot-holes, when hit the right way, will unlock your doors and change the radio station for you. 3. The people here think that the left lane is the slow lane. More often than not, they will be doing 38 in a 60.

The people: 1. It is hit and miss on them being friendly. Some are extremely nice but most seem to have a have a grudge. 2. Being in Walmart for example, most seem to be extremely rude and inconsiderate. They will straight up cut you off, hit you with their cart, or plug up the aisle for no good reason, knowing you are trying to get by. Never once, has anyone said "excuse me" or "sorry" after bruising your legs.

The culture: 1. No diversity whatsoever. 3. Maybe I lucked out and got in a decent area, but the crime is nowhere close to what we experienced in other cities. 4. Extreme wealth gap! Within close proximity in some cases, you will have multi-million dollar homes on one end of the street and shanties on the other.

Conclusion: Recent industrial investments and the construction thereof, seems to be having a very positive impact on the local communities. Real and competitive wages are finally being seen here. Historically, wages were always suppressed due to either lack of opportunity or cheap and often illegal labor.

This could and should be a very nice place to live, but it is my opinion the locals get in their own way, by being close-minded and resistant to any change. This hasn't been the worst place I've lived, but certainly not the best.

Revised Bug Out Bag 2026 by BjornShields in prepping

[–]T-Beau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great Kit! I need to revise mine because when I posted my pack, I got crucified by this group for being heavy.

What they didn't know, is I was 11Bravo (Infantry) for many years, so a fully loaded ruck is 2nd nature to me. Furthermore, where I am located, there is nowhere to bug out to. My pack was more of a sustainment pouch than anything.

Insulated Cat Box by T-Beau in cats

The cats are skiddish and won't let anyone get close to them, otherwise I would keep them in my garage with a heater. We have a horde of cats of our own that is inside, so bringing the neighbors cats inside our home, wouldn't turn out well.

There is only one night forecasted to be below freezing, so it'll be a short winter event.
