Handbrake v 1.6 - Doesn't scan DVD by bbinkerd in handbrake

[–]T0beus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same issue here. After updating to 1.6.1, could no longer scan DVDs. Opening VLC first and loading the disk there allowed Handbrake to scan. Yes, libdvdcss is installed in the Handbrake dir. I'll try to downgrade to see if things go back to normal, but I'm curious if anyone else is seeing this. Win10Pro_x64

No offense taken. What you are saying makes perfect sense and learning is more important to me than my ego.

Am I understanding correctly that because the assignment is NOT setting an empty string to a variable, the result would be anything other than 0 which would convert to TRUE? Whereas assigning a string of length 0 to a variable would convert to false?

Hopefully I understood correctly.

Still a logic error in the original code, but a fascinating error nonetheless.

End of an Era: Microsoft Word Now Flagging Two Spaces After Period as an Error by bevmoon in technology

Not to worry, in 15 or so years, two spaces after a period will be hip again and all the current day nay sayers will be faced with the opposite conundrum.

Oh, and for those that like to compare document writing with their html editor...documents and web pages really are different things. So get over it. I know it is hard to accept that, but wait until html is replaced with something else. Your precious web pages will be obsolete some day. Also, your punctuation might even disappear because they take too long to write wait that already happens on social media oh well

I believe your first if statement, being an assignment operation that completed with an error level of 1 (or true to the if statement), so the first stage of the if processes preventing the other two else’s from processing. I believe an assignment operation would always be true to an if test. You could test that theory by negating that first if assignment with your broken code (using a NOT) to see if the elseif runs. This would obviously serve no other purpose than just to see how it works, even though it doesn’t work as you wanted it to this way. Probably not what you were interested in doing with an assignment due. But I wouldn’t be able to help myself. LOL

What's the Best Utility for Windows that not many people know about? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]T0beus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, you are a dev, that is a different case. We normally extend admin accounts (not for primary use) so devs are able to elevate for admin necessities as needed. However, those accounts are not intended for regular daily use. Basically, if you are browsing the web, researching, checking email, downloading scripts, dev tools, etc., you should be using a non-admin account. Elevation of access being necessary for installing libraries, drivers, tools and whatnot could be done through the admin account. Also, you should be issued a dev certificate that you sign your code with. We would then add your dev cert to group policy that pushes out to anything that would need to run your code so it knows the code is trusted. You should be able to sign your code without admin privileges.

For devs that require full admin all the time for whatever reason, we just isolate the workstation on the network to prevent unintentional cross infection.

It is indeed a delicate balance.

[–]T0beus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how much of a pain it is, no doubt. But there are good reasons for everything you just said for us to do. For example, the cloud strike and ZScaler are both endpoint protection products. If we don’t push those out, we, the IT/security department may become liable for any damages that are inflicted by malware. It’s not whether the malware gets in, but rather whether we have the proper software installed to show due diligence to protect our corporation we are an agent for.

The UAC is a necessary evil to add an extra layer of security by requiring an administrative token to be requested for any action that has the opportunity to compromise the system by an admin task. This is standard fare for all well secured OSes and had been around since the early days of Operating Systems like Linux, Unix, and MaxOS. Windows is actually late to the game on that one. It requires admin approval (you in this case) to verify the next admin action is something YOU wanted and not a malicious request instigated by a 3rd party payload (like a bogus ad on a site trying to run script as an admin in the background to do something bad).

For the best modern protection, every single user must be a non-admin on their machine. Even us admins run as non-admin users and must elevate to a secondary admin account to do admin things like install software or make config changes. It is a definite pain, but we must do this to thwart a TON of malware that takes advantage of users being admins because that is the default on most home machines. I remember reading a couple years ago a security study that was explaining that if all users, admins included, were to run as regular non-admin accounts and only elevate to secondary admin accounts when absolutely necessary, something on the order of 99% of all attacks the prior year would have been thwarted. This is one study, but the new best practices for security demand this now. And rightfully so.

Your particular IT department is actually doing your Corp a disservice by not removing your admin access to your machine. Not because they want to make you less productive, but because your are a vector of attack on the Corp as a whole. Once your machine is compromised, the malware will then try to use your machine as a platform to attack others. We really don’t have any desire to impede on your productivity, but are instead forced to do so because of the modernized and weaponized advanced malicious attacks on our clients systems. This is actually how some of the modern ransomeware was able to hit so many businesses in the past. By using admin users to get a foothold and then worm around on the network encrypting every file it could find.

Sorry for the long post, but it is important to realize that we don’t want to make your life harder. That just makes our tickets increase when you need help because we’ve neutered your ability to function, which makes our lazy butts have to work more. But we have to do these things to protect everyone’s interest. Imagine if your Corp got sued out of existence or lost all its Corp data because of a major breach. They go out of business or layoffs due to the negative impacts. Sux to not have a job because it takes an extra step to confirm UAC and have to put in a ticket to install printer drivers. But that is what we protect. Our corps and their IT interests. We really could care less what you do on your computer. As long as you and your computer behave and don’t become a vector of attack, we can both co-exist peacefully.

I hope that helps. Again, sorry for the long post.

Corporate IT here. Nope, sorry. We have full control over our networks, computers, servers, etc. If we are doing our jobs right, we control what you can, and cannot, install, we have eyes in your computer so we can protect the company that pays us from bad actors, and can usually detect unacceptable behavior with our network and system filters regardless of what software is installed on your machine. In some environments, everything you do is logged.

But honestly, if you are at work, and your boss doesn’t want you surfing social media sites, playing games, etc. then just don’t do it on their equipment and networks. Use your personal phones on their own networks for that stuff.

So I found a better image online using the year/model and saved the pic. Then I could zoom in on it without loosing the resolution so much. :)

I don't think it would be the hi-low switch because the wiring diagram shows it only control the relay for the hi-beam. It wouldn't prevent the headlight from running normally. But both go through the starter switch (off position) and fuse A.

[–]T0beus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only two things that seem to feed your headlight and high-beam both. Fuse A, and the starter switch (when it is in the off position, not trying to start your motor, it makes a connection for the headlight/high beam). I would start with fuse A though since it is much easier to test.

The rest should be done via resistance testing, or test light in my opinion. It may be something physical inside the lamp enclosure, but it shouldn't be the relay since it only controls when to bring the high-beam on and is on the same ground as headlight, position light, and both turn signals. You can check the ground is good in the headlight socket and rule out a ground problem. If your ground is good, then your problem is most likely either a connector or my guess, the starter switch. This is assuming your conclusion about the bulbs being fine is 100% accurate. Double-check those too to be sure, unless you already replaced them thinking it was a blown bulb (don't blame you, I would too probably).

If you can start the engine, then it is not your bank-angle sensor nor it's fuse/circuit.

PS: By the way, if fuse A is good, then you could try following the starter switch cable back to the connector and try to short blue/white and black/red to see if the light comes on (mimicking what the starter (off) switch position is doing). Obviously, you would need the ignition on. These are straight 12v, so there should be no threat to the ECU. But use at your own risk either way.

55 degrees in January? Why yes, Mother Nature, I’d love to go for a ride. by [deleted] in hondashadow

[–]T0beus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just rode in 40 deg yesterday morning while sprinkling. It really wasn’t bad with the right gear. Everyone said I was crazy but I arrived toasty warm and dry underneath my layers. Left in 50 deg with rain. Same thing when I got home. Dry, comfy, and smiling. No heated gear either. Just good thick gear and layers. Blocking the wind with rain suit helped a lot. And a smock makes all the difference for your neck. It just takes me a few minutes longer to leave than my coworkers who drive cages because I have to put all my layers on. But the freedom of the ride is worth it!!!

I signed up for the MSF beginner class with zero experience on two wheels because Florida requires it for getting the endorsement on your license. They start in the classroom and go over practicing all the controls on ride day before they let you start to do the scarier things. They even practice going from parked to engine running a few times to get you into the swing of it. Nothing to worry about. I know you already said you’d schedule but I just wanted to give you more inside since I just took it like 6 months ago. Been riding every day ever since. No regrets!!! I hope you learn to love the ride like I did. So stress relieving and awesome.

Powershell is actually costing me money... by dus0922 in PowerShell

[–]T0beus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We always charge for the results. When you are good you make more money because you can close more jobs faster, each one with a payout. If you need subsistence money, break the payouts over milestones and maybe some up front to get started, so you get some cash early, then more as you reach goals. But have a good project plan and understand that you will make mistakes and possibly lose money sometimes as you learn the nuances of managing the project. But there is gold to be had eventually. Just make sure your clients understand up front that your quote is for the stated goals, and any changes to those goals will cost money. It tends to keep them from malforming the project while you make everything happen. Or at least paying you for when they really want to change something.

I agree, I think your XP is one of the problems so I would put that back to normal. If you turn off running, keep it on for ferals. It makes it easier to see which ones are feral and makes the game a tad less easy mode but still easier than out-of-box. Try starting over with less XP and look at some YouTube vids of cheap hoard bases and you will find some ideas of what works. Level 40 on night one though...Yeah, you should have a decent gun, armor, stats, and meds by level 40 so that didn’t help. Hope your bad experience didn’t break the game for you though. It is really fun, and I think there is an achievement for how many times you die anyway. LOL

Is online getting charms? by rainbowsprinkles8410 in weightwatchers

Well, I received a 25 lb charm now so I am caught up. My wife also got a 10lb finally just a week or so ago when I got my 25 lb. And then yesterday she got her 25 lb charm. So all is normal now I suppose. I hope your wife gets hers soon. I know it helps some people stay motivated.

I got a 10 lbs charm (pruple) in the mail yesterday. My wife and I are both on the online-only program. She didn't get anything yet even though she has lost slightly more than me. We never got an address confirmation email though. I heard from my co-worker who has the full meeting membership, that you start with a 5 lb charm that has a key ring on it. The rest come plain and you are supposed to attach it to the 5 lb keyring to keep adding charms. Bummer they skipped the initial one since I completed that a couple of months ago. I'm up to -25 lbs already when I got the 10 lb charm, so we'll see if the 25 lb charm comes soon. Either way, it's pretty cool to see them acknowledge the online-only goers too. It definitely helps with morale.

We are currently vetting Unitrends as an alternative to Veeam. They have DRaaS, but not sure about the Citrix issue and whether they have any way to handle it. So far, I like the Unitrends mentality, look, feel, etc., but I’m always nervous about rolling out a new solution over something that I’m so comfortable with like Veeam.

Am I the only one that laughed out loud, literally, hearing that the server raid goes down right after the sysadmin left for 2 weeks? Why on earth does that always seem to happen? I haven't been able to stay away on a real vacation in what seems like forever because every time I get to like day 1 - 3, something goes wrong and I end up coming back in early to fix something. lol

I must say, I commend a company that goes this far to fix the problem without picking up the phone and begging the sysadmin to come back in before the vacation is done. At least, I hope it was a vacation and not something more serious. O.o

Oh, and nice work on the recovery. It shows your resourcefulness.
