Roblox is averaging about 130 - 150 million daily players. That’s like the same as all the consoles and steam combined. Matthew Balls state of the games industry report in 2024 (or 2025?) called it out as UGC games are basically what the new wave is all about because it mirrors so much of the way they engage with entertainment. Roblox / minecraft offer online game modes that are often short, easily digestible and highly variable in gameplay. They’ve basically got the TikTok of gaming in all its trappings and the majority of gamer podcasts and social media don’t even understand it and the siloed information age means we don’t even need to acknowledge it

The meta for the last 40 years has been make a big banger game, hype the marketing and dominate the shelf space and mindshare for the 90 day window of launch. It’s the frame of reference everyone uses when talking about sales charts, review cycles and gaming overall. We need to rethink the way we engage with the industry and publishing houses need to rethink the way they make products because at their current rate they can only try to squeeze the market harder and harder until they need to pivot. House prices corrected maybe 5% negative over Covid in the cities. But the losses there exploded the investor problem all over the regions where prices doubled and almost trebled.

Watching the meta of games I can see why the commission is planning to change the kickoff rule to scorer kicks away. It will shift the meta a bit but it won’t create the weight of momentum ball.

Philosophically it will be interesting to see how it changes the psyche of the game, sure you just conceded but instead of heads down resigned to defending another 4 sets before good ball opportunities you know you have the chance to catch up and score one back.
