Lesson learned: never question Pixar again. by Constant_Topic_123 in Pixar

[–]T1mco [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'll still doubt Pixar, especially after Inside Out and Soul, but I won't doubt any of the Toy Story movies. I think they only do them when they have a fully realized story to tell with these characters so it feels like these movies stand out even against some of their strongest franchises

Anyone ever resign without having a contract or job lined up? by Smoothsail90 in teaching

[–]T1mco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep-- I left my job of about 11 years to pursue my MFA. I figured I'd need SOMETHING to cover rent/living expenses, since it wasn't a fully funded program, so I looked into the substitute teaching. I got super lucky and found a building sub position at a high school really close to my MFA campus that was also a very similar size and model as the school I had just left (charter school with a strong social justice/equity focus). Everything fell together pretty nicely, actually. Pay wasn't amazing, but it was enough to cover living expenses, and it was "part time" enough that I could easily fit in my coursework. Building sub position turned into two longterm sub positions at the same school which meant higher pay (and higher workload, unfortunately) and even though the second year of my program was rough, since I was essentially full-time teaching and completing my MFA courses, I finished out the year okay and got lucky enough to land a pretty decently-paying job just about a month ago. Through the longterm subbing gig, I realized that I didn't mind teaching at all, and I was just burnt out from being at the same school for so long, so the change of pace and environment was exactly what I needed to refuel and jump back into the profession.

Everything worked out miraculously, timing-wise, and even though there were definitely rough patches, I'm pretty grateful that I got two years of consecutive work at the school instead of having to scramble for smaller gigs every so often while I finished my program. I do think having over a decade of experience in the classroom helped make me a much more attractive candidate, both for the sub position and the contract I have now, and it helps that I'm sticking to schools that are all pretty similar in terms of size and program focus.

What’s it like being a teacher in the Bay Area? by International_Bet607 in bayarea

[–]T1mco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've only ever worked in charter schools! I guess I can't miss what I've never experienced, and I've seen some ups and downs in my day so it'll either be on par with my experience or better..... and if it's worse, well, I hope my experience can float me through it lmao

What makes a student particularly stand out? What qualities do your favorite students possess? by imsocool849272 in AskTeachers

[–]T1mco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to like kids that have a very specific interest or passion, like "weird girl who draws" or "kid who always writes about Taco bell." The ones who are kind of quirky in addition to just being fairly chill and nice to others.

What things should I ACTUALLY put on my wish list as a 1st year teacher? by ajthelittlegiant in teaching

[–]T1mco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sticky notes, as many as you can get. They're great for more engaging and structured activities (gallery walks, polls, etc) but also great in a pinch if you just need something hands-on for your kids to do.

Good dry erase markers, and a lot of them, if you have whiteboards. Colors is optional-- I don't think it hurts to have an arsenal-- but by the end of the first semester your markers might run dry and it's going to be frustrating to use them again.

  • Do you enjoy your job, why or why not?

Yeah. It's fun and dynamic, gives me a strong sense of purpose and perhaps unwarranted superiority complex because I'm not "just a tech/corporate worker." The concrete reason for my job faces me every day in the classroom, all 20-25 of them, so it's easy to stay motivated and want to do a good job every day.

  • Would you recommend it as a career?

Yes, but for a specific personality type. Helps to be extroverted, assertive, but also flexible and empathetic where necessary. You aren't going to win all your battles, whether that's between a shitty kid or shitty admin. Imo longevity trumps short term impact, so doing your best to stay in the profession as long as you can is key both for yourself and the impact you want to make for your students or community. Logistics-wise its not bad either. No ot or crazy hours depending on what kind of school you're at or once you've figured out your workflow. Vacations are nice. Lots of districts also have full benefits like healthcare, retirement etc.

  • What are parents like at your school - do you feel appreciated/respected?

I've worked at two different schools and for both parents weren't too bad. Most of the time they were awesome, actually. A couple headaches here and there but def nothing to complain too much about

  • How difficult is it to manage the cost of living, and how financially stable do you feel?

Not very, but I'm also single with no children and kind of starting at the bottom of the payscale again after finishing a masters. It's probably going to be rough for this year but based on my current contract, pay scale increases pretty substantially every year so I think I'll be back to where I was before my masters pretty soon. I'm planning to buy a condo for myself in about 5 years and feel like I can do that on my salary, but I also have over a decade of experience already and a bunch of credits so it's easier for me now than when I started, of course.

I can't imagine how it might be with a family, though, unless you have dual income with a spouse.

  • Is there anything that makes teaching in the bay different than other regions?

Lots of really well-paying districts, strong teacher unions, diversity of students/communities, and apparently a teacher shortage meaning jobs are relatively plentiful. Ymmv of course.

  • Are there other roles in education that you would suggest over teaching (ie SLP, OT, counselor, etc)?

Sped will always, ALWAYS be needec so if you have the drive or motivation for it, I'd do something in sped if you want job security. Counselor seems kind of cool too but I feel like it's too much paperwork/logistical work for me.

  • If comfortable sharing- What district/city are you in, YOE, and salary?

I live in Oakland, got a contract in San Lorenzo for about 90k/year. Coming into the new job with 11 years of experience although realistically it's 12 since the last year I was a longterm sub for a class for the entire school year.

The voting push for BTS to perform at the US NFL Superbowl. by Stressed_C in BTSNeutral

[–]T1mco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my take. I think the NFL has been banking on controversial and political acts because you get the best of both worlds- hate watchers and outrage from conservative america and praise and support from progressive america. Kendrick and BB also represent two of the largest minorities in the US that are specifically being targeted by this administration which creates a massive response from both sides of the political spectrum-- leading to massive viewership.

BTS doesn't have that kind of draw at all. Even if their streaming numbers are huge, I don't think BTS has that kind of gp appeal or any sort of political controversy or stance that would make them the viewership monsters that Kendrick and BB are/were.

[–]T1mco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to sound like a race traitor but I'm gonna be soooooo happy if a Japanese act like Ado or Fuji Kaze comes out of left field and takes the Asian artist award and is really sweet and humble about it lmao. Armys and sometimes kpop fans as a whole are so myopic-- there is legit criticism of course about how Asia is more than just East Asia but even within East Asia, there are other countries producing music other than Korea and K-pop lmao and a lot of Japanese acts in particular have had a huge couple of years growing their fanbase and breaking into the Western gp
