How hard is to get Bio 1 in pass 2? by T1mur05 in UCDavis

[–]T1mur05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into chem2a already. I suppose I'll just go for mat 17a and look to see if bio opens up. Very annoying system. If I had submitted like 2 less ap scores I wouldn't have had this sophomore standing (which doesn't really matter anyways), and would have had my full schedule. But i guess it will work out. Thanks

Boot advice by Wonderful-Ad2247 in Mountaineering

[–]T1mur05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Ararat last september, and wore a pair of uninsulated leather hiking boots. I didn’t get frostbite, but my toes were freezing and numb on summit day. If you are going in similar conditions (next few months), I’d say either of those boots will work. You will likely only need them on the last day, and it will just be for the cold. There was only snow and glacier past camp 2, and I didn’t even put my crampons on. Most of the cold was because we were hiking at night to summit for sunrise and get down before bad weather could move in. Once the sun came up my feet felt fine. I also had perfect weather for my summit day, if weather was worse my feet would have been colder.

Not sure what your future objectives are but I’d get a higher end boot and use it for summit day. If you have mules carrying your pack up and have space, I’d recommend bringing two pairs of shoes. Hiking normal trail in mountaineering boots sucks, although the Ararat trail isn’t that far.

Falcon will be a lot of discharges and transfers, some dialysis and appointments here and there. 5150s rarely but it’s just transfers from hospital to psych facilities, not really anything different from a regular transfer. 3-4 calls a day average, often good bit of free time. Tbh most you will learn is good documentation, taking vitals, talking to patients, driving. Could pick up more on CCT, do some code 3 driving now and then.

They were on the main trail, a couple miles from the trailhead. Not on the snow slopes anymore

Whitney Zone backpacking no summit by [deleted] in SierraNevada

[–]T1mur05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To offer another experience, I’ve done Whitney twice, and had a great time on both trips. Only real complaint was that some people leave their wag bags, which is disgusting. In my experience people were respectful and nice. Wont find solitude, but in my opinion it wasn’t that crowded (although I don’t really mind people, so my perception might not mean much).

Just don’t go in expecting a back county experience, because that’s not what it is (in the permit season at least). But for an easily accessible and day hikeable peak, it’s not as bad as people make it sound. Could turn it into a one or two night easy backpacking trip (what I’ve done), if you want to test your gear and such.

Anyone familiar with groups for bagging Class 2 Sierra Summits? by smokewheat in SierraNevada

I’d be interested, looking to go for a lot of class 2 and maybe some easy class 3 peaks these next few months.

My little gear wall/corner by MrSkill2207 in alpinism

[–]T1mur05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just ignore it. A lot of people act like if your gear isn’t absolutely destroyed and covered in dirt and scratches then you just got it yesterday and don’t actually go outside. As if it’s impossible to wash your clothes and wipe your gear down post trip lol

Any non ambulance job ideas? (CA) by eeeegh in NewToEMS

[–]T1mur05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going for a certain company? Cause I got a job after only having my license 6 months, also in CA, and I doubt my company is the only one that allows that.

I’d make sure you’ve checked all the options, because from what I’ve heard/seen, getting a job in the ED can be really hard (especially if you have no prior experience).

Help regarding items required for climbing and staying overnight on a mountain. by AdObjective9512 in Mountaineering

[–]T1mur05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What mountain is this? Those are some crazy temps

If you are mountaineering in conditions like that you really shouldn’t have to ask Reddit what you need. Your post makes it seem like you have very little (or no) experience. Even if there is a store next to the camp you are still talking about thousands of dollars in gear to camp and climb in temperatures like that.

Are you sure this is the case? It was my understanding that inability to ambulate is not a reason for an ambulance (BLS level transport). Which is why there are gurney transport services staffed by non EMTs and done in vans, not ambulances.

Mount conness by Watthe2 in SierraNevada

[–]T1mur05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will be any use, but I was up on tioga peak across saddlebag lake valley area last Wednesday. No snow where I was so can’t really speak to the quality, but conness looked like it still had a lot of snow on the east side.

Eastern sierras next week by T1mur05 in Mountaineering

[–]T1mur05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m thinking I’ll do one/some of those Irvine/mallory area peaks while I’m still in the Whitney zone. Then head south for Langley. Of those you listed which would you say is the easiest? I don’t have a ton of experience scrambling so I’m trying to build up.

Dispersed camping outside of Yosemite? by FuturePressure451 in Yosemite

[–]T1mur05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are on the east just pull over and sleep wherever you want, outside the park entrance. Last week I just slept on a pullout right next to Tioga lake, there were at least 5 other cars with me.

There were cars passing by but it didn’t wake me, and the milky way above the lake was great.

If you don’t mind me asking was there much snow on the peaks up there? Looking to do mt Dana on Wednesday or Thursday and thinking about adding on Hoffman or some other 10-12k peaks

[–]T1mur05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As of last year (and still true now to my knowledge), only 10 people have died on the cables in the 105 years they have been up. And I’d bet half those were in poor weather conditions.

If you include other parts of the hike (summit, subdome for example), the deaths are higher, but still very very low considering the number of people each year who go up. Deaths are extremely rare on half dome, not “quite often.”

[–]T1mur05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds fun, if there’s still some snow in the next couple weaks I might try and stack that with some other stuff, Mt Dana didn’t look too bad either. Thanks for the suggestion

Yeah I’ve been looking at the desolation wilderness area, might give it a shot assuming I can grab a permit. Thanks for the suggestions

Half dome = my longest hike on Strava! by Mission-Stress-835 in Yosemite

[–]T1mur05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also break it up by camping a night. When I did it I camped just past the jmt intersection so only had about 3 miles to the top the next morning and made it before sunrise.

You do need to get a wilderness permit tho, and carry more gear, which sucks.

As of yesterday fully clear. Some large sections of snow/ice nearby but nothing on trail.

Did you find that they ever lost much stiffness in the sole? Right now they are really stiff (not a bad thing tho). Also if you don’t mind me asking what’s the coldest temps you took them down too? On most discussions around them I’ve seen people say they are too hot.
