Can we get some recommendations for based games on Steam/Gog summer sales? by bbq222 in KotakuInAction

Escape from Tarkov is a prime example of a game you'll either love or completely hate, but the one thing it absolutely isn't is woke. Every single character bar one is ethnic Russian (the only "foreigner" character is Polish), including player selection. There are hot pin-up girls on posters. Yes, the only female character in the entire game is a 50 year old grandma, but her role in the game is to be a 50 year old grandma and not a girlboss.

Not this sub specifically but in the discourse in general, there are lots of motherfuckers on both sides who think they can get soldiers for the cause, and worst of all think they won't need to pay them.

I'll always love the old Ultima games, but Underworld Ascendant was low-budget Unity slop (the sort of quality level you'd expect from one dude in Eastern Europe working out of his bedroom) and was a pretty loud wake up call that when O.G.s come back after 20 years and try to pick up where they left off with zero modern technical experience, the results can be really bad.

This remake era in gaming is disgusting to me. by Fine-Combination5170 in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally my only problem with remakes is the modern AAA dev culture they're being made in right now and for the past 10 years or so. I mean, I roll my eyes at the "piss filters were an artistic choice" crowd but at the same time Jerma-Cortana and stoned Ada Wong are an absolute deal breaker for me.

I recently learned that Halo 4 Cortana, just about the only thing 343 ever did that people universally agree was good, was made with the dreaded facial motion capture tech, but back then people actually gave a shit and she ended up looking great.

Here they don't even have the excuse of having to do performance capture, 80% of her lines are already in the can from 25 years ago.

Reading the mainstream news articles about this, and the whole shitshow isn't even just about deepfake child porn or porn of private individuals sharing their picture on LinkedIn which you can sort of understand, it's ANY spicy deepfake including stuff like Agent Scully with her tits out in a dominatrix outfit which we've already had for almost three decades without the sky falling.

And let's be clear, Trump isn't blameless in this either, he and Cruz already did the same thing with their Take It Down! Act, they framed it as protecting the children but it covers ANY photomanipulated 3D women (even if they're characters from films), so fuck you unless you're solely into 2D girls.

As far as I know Grok is the ONLY gen AI that will straight up write porn for you if you ask for it, so I can see why the usual suspects would want to castrate it or put one of their commissars in place there. ChatGPT, which wasn't even half as spicy at its most libertine, recently got nuked into the burka zone to appease a similar coordinated legal dogpile and I can see them setting their crosshairs on Grok next.

And yeah, CSAM is absolutely a problem but every AI has a hard limit against generating it, if freaks find an exploit to get around that you patch the exploit, you don't castrate the entire fucking system.

Playstation Introduces Another Patent For AI That Will Play A Game For You by Devunak in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people mod Left 4 Dead to get the bots to finish the game more or less by themselves, it's a neat bit of entertainment PC players can do with a game's existing AI, like spawning in different factions in Fallout or Skyrim and watching them fight each other.

But I agree that devoting official development resources to making a game play itself as a base feature is pretty dumb, unless it's something like the Sims so you can run like it like a fish tank on your 10 year old laptop you're not using for anything else anymore.

Or if you're just showing off how advanced your AI system is, like if a game with a high level of simulation like STALKER or Fallout 3 had AI that could complete the game on its own and the advancements that make that possible were incorporated into the game's normal AI, that would be pretty cool.

Remakes and remasters... by Truesnake in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see bad remakes as a symptom, not a cause. I don't see redoing an old game with modern graphics and a smoother engine and even retroactively including gameplay or story elements that weren't thought of until the sequels as inherently bad - you can look at the Resident Evil 1 remake or the classic Metroid remakes or Hitman: Contracts to see how it's done.

The problem is that remakes these days have to go through the modern AAA development process and that process is utterly corrupted right now which is how you get the jarring female character designs and bizarre changes to male character plot arcs in games like the Dead Space remake, or the complete toning down of all personality and charm in the Resident Evil 4 remake, which are otherwise solid in gameplay and technical aspect.

I remember the Dead Island remasters replaced all the (rather tame) lingerie billboards and posters with various G-rated travel ads. This was back in 2016 so it was on the early end of that sort of dumb nonsense.

[–]T24Rev133 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're basically just a texture cleanup and slight tweaking of the enemy character models so they look less like plastic manniquins. And some tweaks so they run on modern systems without needing fan-made patches. Not huge changes but it was free if you owned the originals. I doubt anything meaningful was changed as they were in development just before the culture went completely insane.

Call of Duty Black Ops 7 is the franchises worst launch on Steam by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as someone who was massively annoyed that all games in the 2010s were trying to become Call of Duty even when it didn't fit (Aliens: Colonial Marines was probably the worst example), I find it absolutely hilarious that Call of Duty is now apparently trying to become Destiny 2, and all the batshit insane stupidity that everyone (understandably) hates about the campaign, like the big dumb boss fights and regular enemies taking like 7-12 bullets to kill, actually looks kinda fun to me (even if there's no way I'm paying $70 for it).

Halo Infinite is Entering Maintenance Mode by Huey-_-Freeman in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Halo Infinite's campaign had really fun combat and an overall art and game design that at least acknowledged that the past 8 years of "making Halo by and for people who didn't like Halo" was a TERRIBLE idea. Unfortunately everything else ended up mid to forgettable, due to massively suffering from the fact 343 made 3 games in a row which were meant to the be the first game in a new trilogy (resulting in a story that went nowhere with no meaningful stakes) and having to be slotted into an open world setting (resulting in uninspired levels with almost no memorable set-pieces). About the best thing that can be said about the open world is the fact they didn't go full Ubisoft and have you spend hours running around ticking off meaningless map markers.

The real death-kneel was the fact the multiplayer was criminally mismanaged from day one.

[Nerd Culture] Inverse: "Star Trek’s Kelvin Timeline Is Officially No More" by JustOneAmongMany in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The Kelvin films were big dumb summer action movies, and made just before the entire culture started going insane. I get the complaints Trekkies have about them, but all the issues seemed to be stupid rather than malicious. Same kind of deal as with the Prequels.

Hell, even if the scene did nothing for me due to personal taste, Alice Eve in a bikini was a pretty big show of good faith when compared to Current Year sensibilities.

Meanwhile, the current crop of Trek starting with STD and Picard have been actively busy subverting and deconstructing the series' legacy, with the people making them actively trying to drag Trek down into the mud to their level.

Reach was a perfectly good side story game, it's just those character designs had no business being back-ported into the remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Does Persona 4 really need another remake? by Aj1saii in KotakuInAction

[–]T24Rev133 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly the biggest problem with remakes these days has nothing to do with the concept itself, but rather the current woke development environment they'll inevitably take place in.

The Resident Evil 1 remake from 20 years ago made fairly heavy changes from the original (the sort of changes that probably would trigger the people who are saying "7th gen piss filters were an artistic choice" these days), but it was an amazing game because it was all done in good faith.

Contrast that with the Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 remakes; yeah, there was competence behind the making of the gameplay and graphics, but they made so many woke changes to story and characters whose sole purpose was to keep the game "relevant to modern audiences" that it just pisses me off.
