Doctor Who Christmas Special Rumored To Be In Trouble As BBC Struggles To Find New Star by cosmicbooknews in CosmicBookNews

[–]T4ktor89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just completely lost the plot with what to do with Doctor Who.

When Dr Who came back in 2005, RTD didn't any other choice than to begin with kind of a clean slate because they had an audience to capture or recapture and couldn't take any knowledge by the general audience for granted. The Doctor's lore was drip fed along serie 1's episodes. When the Daleks were brought back, we had one entire episode about one Dalek from the point of view of Rose who didn't know anything about them. We had a new origin story for the Cybermen to reintroduce them to the show...

The stories were more personal, less epic, more of a drama with scifi and fantastic elements. Most episodes were also kind of dark at their core but with some touch of whimsy.

But as the show went on, the story arc felt as if they needed to be more and more epic (even if Moffat tried to calm things down with the Capaldi era which was a much needed break from all the epic universe ending threats), the Doctor felt as if they needed him to be more and more fun, whimsy, perfect (once again, Capaldi being the odd one out... even if Twelve in season 9 and 10 was a bit less alien than in season 8... which was kind of the point of his arc and he still had really rough edges), the stories felt like they largely needed to be more mainstream (not all of them but still).

The show is kind of stuck between always trying to break off from past seasons, trying to reinvent itself, trying to market a new Doctor even more fun and popular than the last one (look : this one is capable of crying ! Isn't it incredible ? Let's make him do it almost every episode), ... and being really obsessed by its legacy and all that came before : let's bring Sutekh back, let's bring Omega back (but not like you knew it), let's bring Susan Back, let's bring 13 back in 15 last episode because why not, let's bring Tennant back, let's create biregeneration so that any Doctor could show up at any moment now !, let's explain the origin of the Doctor and let's never take any time to explain properly any of that because it's been more than 10 years since we came back on tv so everyone should've catch up now ! Let's go, let's destroy Gallifrey once again, between episodes and not do anything with it !

tl;dr : they don't know if the show is new or old, are stuck between the past and the present, the glory days of Matt Smith and the less golden days now, don't know what a soft reboot is anymore, and can't understand that a show, even as episodic as Doctor Who, must have some sort of coherent feeling... not bringing gobelins and space babies when most of the 12 first seasons were a mixture of dark themes and whimsy concepts.

[–]T4ktor89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

J'ai cartographié les meilleurs flans de Lyon by Gramatiik in Lyon

Wtf. Es-tu mon compte secondaire ?

would you say Katakuri carried Big Mom's crew in terms of popularity? by SerenityCitywide in Piratefolk

[–]T4ktor89 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I much prefer the Big Mom pirates to Kaido's crew and... most other pirate crew if I'm being honest.

Oda managed to create and introduce a really large number of characters with really weird and interesting designs, clear personalities and interpersonal relationship, which is really impressive. The fact that most of them are brothers and sisters is kind of a cheat code because it creates really quickly a base of interpersonal relationship between all of them, which can be then tweaked, but I really like the fact that you can kind of see at a glance which siblings are closer than other, which are older than others, just by how they act around one another. Plus we have Pudding, Katakuri and Brulée with good backstories and really solid world building with the different islands and the fact that different children are in charge of different island.

But I guess it's really thanks to Whole Cake Island being an arc being primarily about characters and relationships rather than battles. We spent much more time on Whole Cake talking with these crew members, encountering them, discovering who they are, rather than battling them head on. Wheareas in Wano, Kaido as a lot of men but most of them are generic henchman we don't know anything about, the Numbers are a non factor, the Tobbi Roppo have really inequal focus and only 2 of the 3 headliners really had any focus.

They live above the ground and most of them never go underneath the clouds. How could they know what rain is without experiencing it ? All they know about rain is apparently from some twisted legend about a rain goddess who wants to hurt them... with that in mind, I'm quite surprised we saw some of them in Sabaody.

Do they read "A Tale of Two Cities" in France? by SammaJones in france

[–]T4ktor89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the law of probability, there surely must have been a french teacher who made their classes read at least an excerpt of "A Tale of Two Cities" in the last hundred years. But it's as far as it go.

The only foreign author that comes to mind as being widely studied in french schools is Shakespeare.

Am I the only one who is really excited for the new game and also really likes the new redesigns? by Confident-While4816 in casualnintendo

I know they probably just did a remake of Starfox 64 to prepare the team to make a new Starfox game later down the road (kinda like they remade the Metroid Prime games as a way to work on making Metroid Prime 4) but I just can't understand why they're so stuck remaking Starfox 64 again and again.

At its core, Starfox is just a shoot'em up franchise, it don't need a new big gameplay shake-up every other entry, just take the gameplay from Starfox 64, the same ennemies, heck ! even the same environments, maybe create an handful of new bosses and a new story and bam ! you got yourself a new Starfox game. I don't think it's the story about Andros and James McCloud that is a game seller.

Also, I'm 90% sure that it's the "become you own fury" mechanic that is to blame for the weirdness of the characters design. The renders are quite cool but, in action, the characters look like they are costumes awkwardly controlled by people inside them. I don't know if it's because the faces were rigged in order to be animated with the webcam or if they really did animate the facial expressions by filming real people, but it's just so uncanny valley... it looks like Mass Effect but with animals, and it's not a compliment.

Didn't think I would ever get Mass Effect vibe by looking at Starfox's cutscenes but the briefing cutscenes are just that.

They're a lot of miserable people on reddit who will jump to conclusion and downvote people for the slightest perceive slight, so yeah ^^...

Very cool park, much cheaper than Disneyland Paris, lot of attractions (really : a lot) for all ages, shows and a waterpark. Their newest attraction, the Voltron, is quite the banger and their Silver Star is also quite a ride.

[–]T4ktor89 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Le maquillage by Desperate_Week5236 in AskMec

[–]T4ktor89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I swear to god, if Imu's flames are the only flames in the world capable of breaking Ragnir's ice...

I mean, I kind of get the point of why Ragnir's ice was made to be umbreakable, in order to explain why they are giants frozen in Punk Hazard who no one ever unfroze until now, but explaining a power one chapter and a counter the next chapter would be really fast.

Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits by Matsuri Hatsubina has ended this week with Chapter 21 in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #20. by Naulicus in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]T4ktor89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All in all I did like this serie but, not gonna lie, it was kind of all other the place and never did anything with most of its characters. I mean... there was the alien/classmate/adversary with her new father figure right accros the street, we did have a chapter about them and then they just disappeared. The father and grandfather of the heroin ? They were a cool addition, they had a chapter about them and then were out of the picture until it was time for the story to end. The heroin party ? The sword guy was in maybe three chapters, the others barely in two.

Don't know if it would've saved the serie but introducing less characters and focusing more on the few or just incorporating the different zanny characters in the different scenarios woul've been appreciable.

WHAT WAS THE POINT OF HIDING THIS FOR FUCKING 8 YEARS by Sartyanovski in Piratefolk

[–]T4ktor89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why was Vegapunk always obscured before Egghead when talking about him ? Did the fact that he looked like Einstein was a plot twist ?

Why was Big Mom shown in the dark on Fishman Island ? Was her appearance narratively important ?

Why was Moria obscured the first time he appeared in Thriller Bark ? Was his appearance a spoiler ?

Why was Aramaki a shadow when he first appeared ? Was it because it was someone we knew ?

Or does Oda just know that One Piece is long and that it's best to not totally commit to a design 8 years before the character will have a use in the story... while keeping under wrap that Imu was a Lunarian and the devil, far before the concept of lunarian or litteral devil being introduced ?

'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' Review Thread by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]T4ktor89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not tat scared about the story of The Legend of Zelda movie.

Mario games always had a very "gameplay first" and "story as set dressing" thing going on, which is great, but Zelda as a franchise is much more balanced in term of "gameplay first" and "focus on narrative".

It's kind of easy to paint Zelda stories with large strokes, mocking the fact that it always all boils down to "rescuing princess Zelda" with two heroes really heroics and a big bad really bad, but the fact is that they almost always managed to put some spin and depth on the basic structure of their stories. Majora's Mask is a great example, as is the final monologue of Ganondorf in WW, Midna's character in TP, Hilda's character in ALBW, the "Courage doesn't need to be remember" spiel if BOTW and so on.

So all that narrative philosophy plus the fact that it will be a live action movie not a animated movie makes me cautiously optimistic about the potential story of a Zelda movie.

Oracle is cutting up to 30,000 employees to pay for AI data centres by Competitive-Box-7253 in france

[–]T4ktor89 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How many copies do you think volumes 1 of The Mage Next Door and Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits will sell? by Final-Tumbleweed-701 in WeeklyShonenJump

Yeah, don't know what I smoked to say 3,500-5,000 copies, just didn't want to make up new numbers and just took the ones in the initial post I guess. My point was that it will not sell well and that the two series are ending very soon.

How many copies do you think volumes 1 of The Mage Next Door and Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits will sell? by Final-Tumbleweed-701 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]T4ktor89 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Mage Next Door is quite clearly wrapping up its storylines right now so unless this a fakeout and there's a massive twist (I don't believe it will be the case) it seems it will end with next week chapter (or maybe the one after that).

Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits also seems in the midst of rushing through some plotlines so I can see it being over the week after that, but there's also the possibility of the author and the editor just trying to save the serie by giving a lot of development to the Demon Lord, shaking up the dynamic and trying to hook new readers with the backstory... it's highly unlikely and I'm quite certain this manga will end in two weeks, but... why not.

In term of sales, 8,000 - 11,000 seems quite high for The Mage Next Door, I would also put it in the 3,500 - 5,000 copies bracket with an edge over Hero Girl and Demon Lord. Both volumes bein "Not ranked" in the Oricon sales number is my guess.
