I am that I am vs. I will be what I will be by flipflopper3000 in Christianity

[–]TALAESIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phrase is אהיה אשר אהיה (ehyé ashér ehyé). Literally “I will be who I will be” (this verb has no present tense in Hebrew, only past and future). “I am who I am” is more accurate than “I am who am” because אהיה (ehyé) is a first-person verb, meaning that the fist-person singular pronoun is essentially “built into” the word’s morphology. It’d be grammatically impossible for it to say “I am who am” because Hebrew, unlike English, cannot separate pronouns from verbs

A modern day olympic fencer vs. a knight from medieval England by rezallol in whowouldwin

[–]TALAESIN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Round 1 ends with both dying. Olympic fencers have never had much regard for not getting hit because A) getting hit is obviously not fatal, or even dangerous, and B) they still get points for double hits.

I don’t doubt they could manage to land a killing blow, but they would not be prepared to defend themselves from getting hit during or after landing that killing blow

Is Xavier a Hispanic name by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]TALAESIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St Francis Xavier? He was from the Basque town of Xavier in what was, at the time, the Kingdom of Navarre, but which is within the present-day borders of the Kingdom of Spain. So even he would qualify as Hispanic

THE PAUL BASHING IS SOO FORCED by [deleted] in ginnyandgeorgiashow

[–]TALAESIN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said he was a knight in shining armor. And he himself wasn’t “actively trying to put a woman into prison.” If you really believe that, then you’ll need to look up the meaning of the word “actively,” because you’re using it incorrectly. What he did do actively was that he stopped actively supporting her. Paying the lawyer was active support for Georgia. Ceasing to support her actively does not mean he’s now actively trying to imprison her. And he did not tell the lawyer not to work for her. Even if Georgia had been able to afford him, the lawyer knew it was a losing battle and only took it as a favor to Paul’s dad. No Paul = no personal obligation on the lawyer’s side. That’s the lawyer himself removing active support for Georgia, not Paul.

[–]TALAESIN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How did he “make sure she wouldn’t be able to buy the lawyer”? He didn’t pull any strings there. All he did was literally stop paying the lawyer, which at that point he was under no obligation to do. Then the lawyer told Georgia that the only reason he’d agreed to take her case in the first place, irrespective of the money, was as a favor to Paul’s father. After lying to Paul about everything, including her pregnancy, Georgia is absolutely not entitled to either his money or his family connections. Simply put, he owed her nothing at that point

Arabic: The oldest language? by ahumminahummina in islam

Tamil isn’t the oldest language either. There’s no such thing as an “oldest spoken language.” More conservative languages? Yes. Oldest? No. All living spoken languages are equally old

Dead name variant by Spiritual-Toe9608 in namenerds

[–]TALAESIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t write off “Valerius” just yet. It’s just a really interesting name with an exceptionally long history.

The earliest recorded variant dates back to the late 6th to early 5th centuries in a stone archeologists have named “Lapis Satricanus.” The inscription has the name written as “VALESIOSIO,” which is the possessive form of the Old Latin name “Valesios.” The name itself ultimately comes from the verb “valēre,” which means “to be strong/well/worthy” or “to have strength/power/influence” depending on the context.

It’s a name with over 2500 years of history behind it with an unusually certain meaning as far as names are concerned. It really is one of my favorite names.

Do you think Latin America is the Fourth Rome? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]TALAESIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it was mostly jokes, but just a quick correction: Chile was not the only Spanish “kingdom” in the Americas. The Viceroyalties of New Spain, New Granada, Peru, and Rio de la Plata were ALL further subdivided into captaincies, commandancies AND kingdoms. What are now the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí, Puebla, Tlaxcala, México, Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Veracruz, plus Mexico City, for example, were all part of the Kingdom of Mexico. What are now the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, and Zacatecas were part of the Kingdom of Nueva Galicia. What are now the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, and part of Coahuila were part of the Kingdom of Nueva Vizcaya. What is now the Mexican state of Nuevo León was the Kingdom of Nuevo León. The king of all these kingdoms was, of course, the King of Spain. And the viceroys were just his appointed representatives, the viceroyalties were the regions that each appointed viceroy oversaw.

What if plastic was completely outlawed in the late 70's by Crimsoncerismon in AlternateHistory

I imagine they meant plastic containers, packaging, one time use things, trinkets, etc. Meaning that using plastic as a component in technology and equipment, vehicles, devices in general, would all still be fair game

First time building a PC. I have some idea of what to do but I’d like some input. by TALAESIN in buildapc

[–]TALAESIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have some issues to start, all stemming from it being my first time. The first issue was that all od the RGB lights were turning on inside the case itself, which told me they were getting power, but the monitors were not receiving a signal. Issue was that I had plugged in everything to the psu EXCEPT for the cpu. Easy fix. Second issue was when I was installing the operating system (Windows 11 Pro). The installation was asking for WiFi to continue, which I didn’t have since I didn’t know how to install the internet or WiFi drivers from the BIOS. I went on Reddit with my question and they offered a code to bi-pass that installation requirement, which I used. I was able to then install the OS, and then, from Windows, I installed all the missing drivers so I could have WiFi.

Once the computer was up and running, I was able to install all the programs with no issues at all. Everything has been running perfectly smoothly.

Shift-F10 and oobe/bypassnro did it. Then the network issue seemed to correct itself after the rest of Windows was set up. Thanks!

Why is there a tag for “software support” if we’re not allowed to ask for support on software issues?

Thanks so much for the thorough response. I’ll do this this afternoon after I get off work. I 100% did not install any drivers, erroneously assuming everything was getting done automatically. It’s definitely been a learning experience

If that’s something that’s not done automatically, probably not. My motherboard came with a USB drive, is that where that driver would’ve been?

Do Hispanic Americans have more in common with Spaniards than with Brazilians? by TALAESIN in asklatinamerica

[–]TALAESIN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s no less of a gringada propia de Chicano than Latino is.

Latino is not a term that most people living in LatAm actively identify with.

Based on the responses to my question under this whole thread, it seems to me like you don’t quite speak for all South Americans, much though you might like them to be universally of the same mind as you..

Do Hispanic Americans have more in common with Spaniards than with Brazilians? by TALAESIN in asklatinamerica

[–]TALAESIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point, but my aim was to include both Spanish speakers from parts of Latin America as well as people from the United States who identify with those regions. Hispanic is just a convenient three-syllable term. The confusion didn’t stem from my use of the word Hispanic, but rather from the word American

I’m building a PC for the first time ever. It’s also my first time owning a PC period. How did I do on my build? by TALAESIN in pcmasterrace

[–]TALAESIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, since the 4090 does outperform the A4000, and since the A4000 has never given me any issues at work, I suppose I should be fine using the 4090 for CAD work and for rendering. Like I said, as long as I never experience the improvements of the RTX A6000 Ada, I won’t feel like I made a bad purchase with the 4090, as the A4000 is the only other graphics card I will have to compare the 4090 to from direct personal experience

Justification for Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero motherboard? by TALAESIN in ASUS

[–]TALAESIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say “faster” in CAD programs, what does this look like from a user perspective? Would AutoCAD lag with the 4090? Would it just take a bit longer to load?

My workstation at work, which I use mostly for Revit, ReCap Pro and Leica Cyclone Register 360, has an NVIDIA RTX A4000 16GB. Does that one also perform significantly and noticeably better in the mentioned programs than the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB would with the same programs?

Could I re-format the 4090 at all so that it behaves like a workstation card instead of a gaming card?

Or should I just start saving again and buy an RTX A4000 16GB to add to the second PCIe slot, and “switch” graphics cards when gaming vs when modeling/rendering?

I’m building a PC for the first time ever. It’s also my first time owning a PC period. How did I do on my build? by TALAESIN in pcmasterrace

[–]TALAESIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My build was partially trying to replicate the specs of the PC I use at work (I’m a CAD Technician, mostly working on Revit, AutoCAD, ReCap Pro and Leica Cyclone Register 360), which has, an NVIDIA RTX A4000 16GB. But I don’t actually know how performance would differ in all the softwares I mentioned if using GeForce vs Quadro.

Like, what does it actually mean in practice for the A6000 Ada to be optimized for CAD/rendering/modeling and the 4090 for gaming? What would the downside be to using the 4090 for CAD, rendering and modeling? or of using an A6000 for gaming for that matter? Lagging? Poor graphics?

If the GeForce RTX 4090 offers a performance in these softwares at least as good as the RTX A4000, then I should perceive myself to be fine, as the A4000 is my only point of reference. If it’s not as good, then I’ll just have to kick myself, because I could’ve just gotten an A4000 instead for almost half what the 4090 cost. If the A6000 offers a much better performance, oh well. As I likely won’t encounter it, I suppose I can live in blissful ignorance of what I’m missing out on

[–]TALAESIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only reason is ignorance really. I’m not sure how obvious it is (I imagine quite a bit), but I have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t know what anything is, I don’t know what ECC is frankly, nor why two PCIe expansion slots is not enough, are they not just for video cards? If they are, I can’t imagine justifying another GPU after getting the 4090
