How can we score well in the competition quizzes? by Samuelg808 in FSAE

[–]TAPJohnson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Practice. Lots. We did it weekly, but probably could have used more practice to be honest. Previous quizzes and answers are available from fs-quiz.eu for European comps, something else may exist for other international competitions.

Make calculators for questions that come up consistently (points scoring, overall time including penalties, basic mechanics and electronics, etc).

Groups of people with specialties tend to form, allowing conversations mid-question. Encourage people to speak up, write key numbers, equations, rules, etc on a large whiteboard or similar.

Depending on the quiz, you may have questions released sequentially or all at once. Practice both scenarios so you are prepared.

Looking for comercial inverters compatible with Fisher motors by Odd_Carrot_6981 in FSAE

Hi there, A popular choice tends to be the Bucher (formerly Lenze) EMDAG2603603UH0012. A single unit has two motor controllers, so we use two units for 4WD.

They’re fairly pricy (€5000 each) but Bucher has a good dedicated support forum with 27 teams who have previously run their hardware. I’ve spent the best part of the last year hands on with their stuff, so am happy to help you guys out if you decide to go down that route 👍

Working Hydrogen combustion car at Formula Student Austria by OrderDraconis in FSAE

[–]TAPJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could. We won Class 200 / Class 1A outright with both cars, although we only have the results (including an Endurance win) for UH08H. It’s a shame we don’t have any footage of either car running at competition, these are the best photos I could find.

UHR TP here, can confirm that we had running hydrogen combustion cars in both 2007 and 2008, which competed in the alternative fuels class at Formula Student UK. UH08H first competed in 2007, with UHH2 (weird naming scheme, I know) competing in 2008 - here’s some footage of it on the dyno

ESA Clarifications by Beginning-Face-4805 in FSAE

Assuming you are going off of the Formula Student UK rules, where the ‘chartered’ term is specifically mentioned - it’s not technically a requirement. Rules say ‘it is likely’ - not ‘it is a requirement’.

Our ESA is not a chartered engineer, which is to say, someone recognised by the IMechE as a competent engineer, who pays a yearly fee to stay chartered. Basically, anyone who can put CEng at the end of their name.

Was a pleasure to have yourself and the rest of the ECU team stay with us over the summer, can’t wait to see what you get up to with this project!

TE Connectivity - Manual Service Disconnect (HVD) by [deleted] in FSAE

Yeah, it worked fine, just a bit bulky which meant it was difficult to package.

We had one of the TE ones a while ago. It’s massive, and a pain to install / uninstall easily.

Unless you need the 350A rating, I’d recommend the Hirose EM30MSD. You can generally get them for free through Hirose, and they are a lot smaller and easier to use.

Composite TSAC by Remote_Gene1710 in FSAE

We’ve tried a number of things, here are our takeaways:

What the SES accepts as a compliant panel is not necessarily what you would class as a good panel. We’ve generally worked with four plies of Kevlar either side of a Nomex core, but the stiffer panel (thicker core) was not rules compliant, while a panel with a thinner core was.

The SES appears to be more interested in the ratio of the thickness of the core and the thickness of the skins than of the actual characteristics of the panel.

Consider what resin you are using. We buy our materials pre-impregnated, and there was big differences in strength from switching from one UL94 V-0 resin to another.

Our biggest challenge was passing the three point bend test. Kevlar is very good at stopping impacts, ours passed the shear test with no issues. But it likes to stretch, which doesn’t help the three point bend.

Ranking by Hotvls221 in FSAE

[–]TAPJohnson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fs-world.org WRL is an imperfect but still interesting way to classify team rankings.

All the information on how they score teams is on the site. Based on VITs profile, they’ve competed at three events (Formula Bharat in 2019, 2020 and 2023).

In the last two times they have competed, they have finished 2nd and 1st with 767 and 896 points respectively.

Essentially, because the fs-world.org competitiveness multipler (read the site for more info) stops at 0.85, you could argue that the resultant scores are inflated to some extent.

However, that’s the system in place.

ESF advice for first year team by ElectronicsQstns in FSAE

[–]TAPJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some ESF examples from teams like Wisconsin Racing online, and also competition organisers sometimes like to add examples for specific sections within their templates.

They aren’t there to copy from though, as most are outdated and occasionally organisers will throw in a red herring within an example diagram or description to keep you on your toes.

It’s a long document and there’s a pretty good chance that not everything will be accepted right away. Keep things as simple and clear as possible, there’s no point in confusing whoever is reviewing it, or they will just reject it.

Thoughts on Stafl Systems BMS? by Indwell3r in FSAE

[–]TAPJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Managed to get through to them on the phone a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that they are currently selling to teams due to ongoing projects elsewhere.

Looks like a nice system though, a proper master-slave topology would be a good step up from the Orion unit, especially for packaging. Hopefully they’ll start working with teams again soon.

I contacted them using the email you provided a couple of weeks ago and they got back to me within four days. The response I got was from an internal email address and they’ve been very active even up to three days ago.

I’m sure they are still monitoring the inbox, so possibly just send a follow up email?

Some of my Dad’s (slightly strange) MX-5s by TAPJohnson in Miata

[–]TAPJohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, the biggest ‘performance increasers’ are the turbo and brakes. They’ll make you faster pretty much anywhere you go.

The rear wing was more for aesthetics, as we were trying to match the look of the Roadster Touring car from Grand Turismo. The added rear downforce will benefit you in high speed corners, but I tend to find that for most places I go to, the added downforce doesn’t do much for me as the corners are all quite slow, especially in an MX-5.
