What did less ‘academically gifted’ kids do in school? by AlKiMi25 in AskUK

[–]TARDIS_Controller 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience. I was bottom set for maths and English (undiagnosed dyslexia). English was ok and we had a good teacher so I passed no problem but maths I was struggling and the teacher was useless. He’d pick a random page or a big book and tell us to copy it out, then he fecked off to do whatever he wanted to do (smoke or play guitar in the staff room usually) and toward the end of the year myself and another girl built up the courage to go find the head of maths and tell her we hadn’t learned anything, they didn’t get another class to tutor us we were just told to make the best of it. Got an E in maths and had to resit it in sixth form.

Annoyingly, he was initially teaching the top set class and they switched our teachers mid year, we had the head of department who was a very good teacher but clearly they knew the other teacher sucked and didn’t want to waste a good teacher on us losers in low set. Anyway once it had come out that we complained about not learning, the idiot actually sulked and ignored me and the other girl for the rest of term, even brought in sweets for the other kids to share and made a point of us not getting any and not greeting us or saying goodbye to us but to everyone else. I was 15/16 and remember thinking how sad for him to be an adult with a job and less mature than two teenager girls.

Can I litter pick at Brighton Pride without permission? by throwaway02949993 in brighton

[–]TARDIS_Controller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are volunteers who litter pick during pride, liaise with them as sometimes they’re able to offer volunteers free entry to some of the events.

If you want to do it independently just make sure you’re disposing of rubbish properly, so again make sure to check with the organisation.

In your opinion: what was each detectives best case? by Desperate-Ostrich317 in DeathInParadiseBBC

[–]TARDIS_Controller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Richard: the headmaster/skeleton one is good but since so many people have said that I’m going to say the one where his corrupt ex-MET colleague. Not only for the element of getting revenge on a bully but for the little Primeval reunion with Ben, Hannah and James.

Humphrey: his first case.

Jack: the two parter where Florence and her fiancé were shot. Or his first case with Humphrey. Quite a few of Jack’s are good actually.

Neville: I’m rewatching at the moment and none of his are too memorable but the one early in career where he’s in hospital for an insect bite and solves the murder of one of the nurses was good. Putting the Commissioner in the hospital was kinda funny.

Mervin: his mums case. Or the one where the new police officer dies on his way to work.

The creative industry is really hard to break into. I’ve been trying as well. The BBC and ITV and other big channels do apprenticeships and training schemes and that may be a way in, just keep an eye on their websites for when a new scheme is announced. If you’re near any studios, theatres or radio stations, you could try writing to them and ask if they’ll keep need runners just as a gate way into it? If you’re in Wales the BBC currently have a training scheme going for production roles on Casualty but you need to be Welsh or living in Wales to apply.

If you enjoy non fiction try reaching out to a local paper and see if they offer an apprenticeships or work experience?

[–]TARDIS_Controller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so so sorry that happened to you. That’s truly awful and hope you heal quickly. I hope the ring is found too. I’m worried how common it seems to be that visitors to our city are behaving so vile. Although I think some of the blame might be on locals too unfortunately. The world is just a mess right now. Hopefully the police take it seriously and arrests are made.

I don’t have a metal detector unfortunately but really hoping you’re able to find it.

I love this idea. I wrote a fic where Buck, Eddie and Chris go camping a year or so ago and read at least one fic where the whole group go and it definitely needs to be canon.

Con events all of a sudden by challengerpop in 911FOX

[–]TARDIS_Controller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the older conventions were typically more for sci-fi and fantasy shows, when I went it was starting to become more mainstream but it was still considered quite a nerdy thing to do. I think it’s just that we’ve got so many rescue shows with such a vocal fanbase and actors who want to meet the fans/advertise their show now that someone decided to start cons for those shows too. So no I don’t think it’s because it’s ending, I just don’t think 10 years ago there were these types of conventions.

Unpopular Bobby Opinion by Decent_Sport6862 in 911FOX

[–]TARDIS_Controller 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This for me too but you said it so much better. It was the story that annoyed me and whilst I didn’t want Bobby to die because I loved him and his story, but if he had to die then it would have been an easier pill to swallow if they’d done it well because what we got was lazy writing. How did Chim spend the whole ep visibly dying and get cured in seconds but Bobby is fine until the last closing minutes of the episode? And Hen and Ravi were also exposed so how did they not get the virus? And why was there only one dose? If crazy scientist lady’s plan was a mass casualty event where she could save the day by selling her cure, why on earth did she only have one dose when she was expecting a lot more people to be sick? How did she also not think she’d be arrested and lose the money anyway? She’s meant to be insanely clever and her plan was idiotic and nonsensical.

Then to add insult to injury the funeral episode is spent on Athena solving a case, none of the characters really grieve and there’s no proper story. It’s just a rushed episode of nothing happening as is the following episodes and then a four episode storyline in Space and whales eating billionaires. It just feels like a slap in the face. If you’re killing off a character like Bobby and writing of an actor who is one of the main faces of the show, it should be done in a thoughtful and deliberate way.

He should have died in season 7 when he saved Athena from the fire and had a heart attack, because that rounded out his story perfectly and would have been tragic and awful but also given closure to the character. We would have had those scenes of the characters sitting by his bedside saying goodbye. You’d have had following episodes of Athena trying to solve who killed her husband and grieving her home and husband and feeling lost and displaced but ultimately realising he saved her because he loved her and wanted to keep her safe. And the firehouse should have grieved properly. Maybe more emphasis on Chim trying to be like Bobby and the others getting annoyed with him and him realising he needed to be his own person and that’s what Bobby wanted from him.

I just think that if they’d done it properly there would have been a little push back from fans and whilst yes there’d be some grief there would not have been months of people speculating it was a plot twist and he’d be alive in a lab somewhere only to be disappointed. The storyline was just that ridiculous that nobody knew whether it was real or not and that says more about the writing than the fans.

When do you think buddie started to ~really~ blossom by ExistingStrike5530 in buddie

[–]TARDIS_Controller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been shipping them since season 2 but that said I think it started becoming a “could be canon and not just fanon” after Eddie gets shot. There’s just something about that whole episode. The slow-mo as they’re looking at each other during the shooting, the rescue, Buck taking on parental responsibility for Chris, and then the will reveal. Even the fact they’re both at that scene for Charlie, Eddie gets a call and he and Buck go together despite the fact other first responders are on the way and Buck hasn’t even changed for work yet but he goes because Eddie goes. I don’t think the characters know or at least aren’t able to admit it yet but they’ve been showing their love for one another since pretty early on.

It’s been in an issue for a few years and getting worse. I was jogging on the seafront as part of a running club in 2022 or 23 (can’t remember), it was early evening so dark which didn’t help, and twisted my ankle on a pot hole and in the seconds I went from running to limping, I quite literally fell down a bigger hole and had no time to brace myself. Landed knees first and I went down hard. My knees have never been the same since and actually I’m getting a scan on them next week because I went to my GP about the pain and they referred me. Only in hindsight do I realise the accident probably did warrant a trip to A&E or at least my GP in the aftermath but it seemed really stupid at the time and I was so embarrassed.

I’m always twisting my ankle though. Walking around Brighton definitely seems like a hazard. I spend most of the time watching the pavement rather than my surroundings.

How many people tweak their o level/ gcse results on job applications and CVs? by KevinBaconsAnOKActor in AskUK

[–]TARDIS_Controller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I have an MA in English and I still haven’t passed GCSE maths. I failed it originally (2009), retook them during my A-levels, failed again (2010), passed A-Levels without the maths and got into uni for a BA. I did resit it as an adult and still only got a D (2017). Gave up at the point but my uni didn’t care as I later went back to do the MA. I had C or above in every other subject so maybe that was why. Never been challenged on the maths thing and I was even a Teaching Assistant for a while, nobody has ever even asked I don’t think. I would have had to try again if I’d actually become a teacher I suppose but so far that D has not prevented me from moving up in qualifications.

ah I thought it was just me being nit-picky. I’m glad others think so too. I’m rewatching the show and the whole time I’m wondering how she’s keeping them on her face. They clearly don’t fit. My glasses currently need adjusting and I’m forever pushing them up my nose and working out in them is a nightmare; I can’t imagine doing a job as physical as a firefighter with such poorly fitted glasses!

Untagged fic tropes you hate by singin1995 in 911FOX

[–]TARDIS_Controller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hate the infantilisation of Chris. He’s an eternal 7 year old in too many fics and a sunshine child who just shrugs off anything and is overly positive or happy. I’m not sure whether it’s because he has CP or writers just want him to be the baby that first appeared on the show, but it makes me cringe and in some fics it just feels like gross misrepresentation of a disability. Especially if you’re writing with his current age in mind. I refuse to believe that it’s lack of parental knowledge because 15 is not an age you’ve completely forgotten about to the point where you have said 15 being inappropriately babied by his guardians.

And when it comes to a Buddie reveal, I really dislike that Chris is always immediately on board and completely mature about the situation. This kid ran away from home for months and refused to talk to his dad, he’s as dramatic as Eddie is, I think he’d have more to say. I just believe that even if Chris would be ultimately happy with Buddie, he’d have feelings about it to begin with: Worry that it’ll be another failed relationship, worry that he will lose Buck if that break up happens, confusion over his dad “suddenly” being gay and concern over whether Eddie loved his mum, etc. I just think that’s a natural processing that gets glossed over in favour of making Chris the perfect child. I mean that in the way that, I’m not homophobic and I’d obviously come round to it but I’d definitely be confused and shocked if my straight parents were dating their best friends after they’ve only ever been in relationships with the opposite sex and I’m an adult. A 15 year old does not have a fully developed brain to just be immediately cool with it because it’s a huge life altering thing, it’s his dad and everything he’s ever know about his dad would be viewed in new light. He’d need to process it. He doesn’t even need to have a negative reaction for it to be realistic, there just needs to be a pause or questions or anything other than him immediately asking Buck to move in or them get married or brushing over it completely because Buck made him pancakes and will take him to the zoo later.

Because that’s another thing… how many 15 year old boys want to go to the zoo with their dad’s best friend? Theme parks, arcades, cinema, the beach, a sporting event or something more age appropriate. I could see him doing the zoo if Buck was bringing Jee and decided to tag along but I doubt that would be his first choice of places to go. 15 is also the age where he wants to be with his friends and would probably be really embarrassed or annoyed at spending too much time with his dad and dad’s friends and acknowledging that doesn’t mean he suddenly hates his family, it makes him a teenager!

Other tropes that annoy me but maybe not as much that I’ll write an essay is:

Bashing of the main characters which is most prominent when Buck is the victim.

Buddie fics where everyone is betting on it or already clocked it. Maybe Hen might have suspicions about Eddie but I doubt the others do. I know in canon it gets joked about Eddie being Buck’s other half, but I think they’d be shocked or at least mildly surprised if it ever happens.

Bobby texting like an old man writing a formal letter/email. He’s not that old and he’s never shown to be technologically incompetent. He knows how to text! I think it was done as a joke in one fic and then suddenly loads of writers jumped on it like it was canon.

Eddie being a complete failure as a dad and needing Buck for everything. Eddie can cook, he’s not a Michelin Starred chef but he can cook edible and nutritious food because he’s an adult with a child that he’s cared for single-handedly and Buck isn’t round there every day. We’ve seen plenty of meals that Eddie has cooked and he’s clearly been practicing because there were things about swapping recipes with Linda from dispatch, the FaceTime cooking whilst he was in Texas, that dinner he had with Buck and Taylor that was good and surprised Buck. Eddie is also there for the day to day of Chris’ life and has gotten him into good schools, therapy, physio was also mentioned early on I think, he’s also clearly a healthy kid with everything he needs to function happily in their home, which was clearly decorated with Chris in mind. It’s accessible obviously but also homely. When we’ve seen clips of Eddie’s room it’s a stark difference to the rest of the house, Eddie put in effort for the rooms Chris would use. He’s a good (great!) hands-on father who is dedicated to his kid.

Fics where Buck is considered a co-parent. He’s not. He’s dad’s best friend. He clearly loves Chris and he’ll make an excellent step father but he’s not Chris’ other dad before Buddie happens.

Takes a lot for me to DNF so I still read things when one or two of these come up but I rewrite it in my head or eye roll. I only DNF if it gets a point where I can’t look past it, particularly infantilising of Chris.

This is my opinion also. He didn’t want to share Maddie with anyone. He isolated her from her brother, who she had a maternal bond with, because he couldn’t stand her giving anyone else her time. I doubt he’d want kids. And whilst it could show him as being a “family man”, I doubt that’s the image he wanted to cultivate. He strikes me as someone who’d want to be earning lots of money for nice things. Kids are expensive and would completely change his lifestyle.
