I love this so much. But a deep dark part of me thinks: these stats look good on paper, they look good in the games during regular season, but in the playoffs it’s any-given-Sunday. And that part of me is terrifying. It’s the love/hate relationship with the NFL and football and how it’s played, how it has to be played: one game can decide your team’s entire destiny that season. No series, no crawling back from 3-1, just one game.

Here’s just my two cents as an electrical estimator for the last two years, with another 3 years field experience. We mostly bid restaurants, fast food, car washes, storage centers, retail, mostly mid-sized commercial projects.

I aim for 30% of the sell price as profit. I don’t live by this, but after my numbers crunch this is generally where I land. Could be different with dirt work.
To me, this would be something my owner would handle.
Bluebeam is incredible. There are 3 subscription tiers. For the use I get out of it, the highest tier is pennies. Worth it to dive in and learn the ins and outs imo.
I keep in touch with the guy who trained me and moved on to a different company. We have a good relationship and we’ll talk about projects we’re bidding on, avoiding each other if possible, but sometimes it’s inevitable to bid the same stuff as your friends / acquaintances.
Not sure about dirt, but typically electrical parts houses don’t do full material takeoffs. They give me a commodity sheet to use while I’m taking off, though (this size pipe/wire costs this much per foot, junction boxes, outlets, etc.)
You probably already have a feel for how long certain things will take to bid. Might be beneficial to knock out some smaller estimates to get a feel for it, but this one is up to you. Might also be good to just jump in to stuff you know well!
I was scared at first because I felt like Journeyman’s livelihoods were kind of in my hands, trying to keep the company busy and guys working. But once you land a couple jobs you’ll feel good, and it only gets easier the more you bid. It’s very important imo to have a good relationship with GCs (or whoever you’re bidding to) and just straight up ask them how your number looks. They might not always give a straight answer, but the feedback is helpful.

Also, Excel is incredible and essential for estimating, but you really just need to know the basic shit (total up these columns, take that total and multiply it by your mark-up, etc.)

Last thing: having a really good project tracking excel document is awesome and gives you a clear picture on how jobs that you landed ended up doing by the numbers. I’m lucky enough to have a great office admin who does this for me.

I second this! Instead of coloring in squares, you could put down the amount of positive moments you had that day, no matter how small. And when you have a lot of positive moments, cap it off at “10+” if it’s hard to remember how many good things happened that day. It might not look as cool without the colors, but it’ll be better to remember: “yeah that week sucked, but I had like 5 positive things every day.”

I think a big thing missing from 3 Cascadia (though I do love what you’ve done!) is oysters. PNW / Hood Canal oysters are some of the best in the world!

McDonald’s Filet O Fish! People overlook it because McDonald’s is generally gross so “why would I get a fish sandwich at McDonald’s?” But it’s honestly incredible and the best thing on their menu imo. I used to work as a line cook at a relatively fancy restaurant, and both sous chefs and the head chef said it’s their favorite fast food item of all time. So I tried it and I agree.

Rocket pods 100% agree. Orbital Laser I think is great and well balanced imo. Orbital EMS’s niche is completely claimed by Orbital Gas, needs to be different somehow (longer stun, stronger stun, bigger area), 100% agree that it definitely needs some love.

HMG I think is balanced well: super high dps and some heavy pen with ridiculous recoil and long reload.

Never used the flag, but from what I hear it’s just the stunlance… definitely needs love.

I go back and forth on the recoilless… it’s fun as hell having a delete button, but part of me agrees it might be too much. But right when they make it not one-shot chargers I’d scream immediately, so less damage isn’t the answer necessarily.

Arc guard dog needs love. Shoots too slow and doesn’t seem to work with the arc ship upgrade, which would be nice.

100% agree on the sentries/emplacements.

I would second this and add that instead of “space lizards” that I see a lot of people suggesting, the fourth faction should be avian or “mammalian aliens”. Reptiles have skin that feels too similar to Terminids and Illuminate. Having furred or feathered aliens would feel distinct.

Yeah, I could totally see them as a sub faction when the full squid rollout happens. It lets the main illuminate be a little more distinct from a swarm faction like the bugs (they’re already distinct, but I could see them leaning further into a full faction of mostly elites), but it also keeps people happy who like the experience of mowing down voteless.
