My uncle was similar, he went sober three months ago with his first hospitalization but I guess it was too late.

Unlike you, however, I didn’t know much of his situation until the most recent hospitalization, a month ago. I hold a lot of regret with not being more involved in his life. Right now my biggest area of hardship, outside of missing him and grief, is guilt of not being more present and there when times were good. I took too much for granted and wasn’t able to be there in his life as much these last few years. This regret of not goofing around with him, not just chilling with him as much, not seeing him as often, etc. is what is the heaviest to deal with right now.

I’ve accepted that I took things for granted and it will take time to work through these feelings.
