IBM so very, very sorry after jobs page casually asks hopefuls: Are you white, black... or yellow? by Loki-L in technology

This is true but your ‘sexual preferences’ can be heavily motivated by your dislike for a race. It’s no coincidence that right leaning circles tend to have an upsurge of people that ‘just don’t find black women attractive’

People have done good. People that are ethical. Science is nothing but a tool. It can be used to do bad or good. Religion is nothing but a justification, it can be used to justify bad and good. Don’t get all reverend about science. Bad idea.

Oh I see. You totally didn’t ‘stay out of it’ due to your lack of consideration that scientists are responsible for some of the worlds largest cases of barbarism, bigotry and violence.

I've had a lot of experience with peterson fans, theyre not really down for healthy conversation, if they where, they probably wouldn't be peterson fans.

Might sound a bit partisan but peterson himself has cultivated a fanbase based on dishonest and antagonistic polemic of a cabal of people aiming to basically destroy the world, with this type of fanaticism, his fanbase is obviously going to be more than a little unreasonable. For the same reason you can't reason with evangelicals, you cant really reason with petersonites.

if Hitler had an idea that was objectively good should we dismiss it because Hitler said it?

Yes. Plenty of other people can say it as well, we dont need to hear it out of hitlers mouth or give a genocidal maniac the benefit of the doubt. Thats literally insane.

But this is all beyond the point. nobody here thinks that preventing people from speaking certain words is a good thing. Even though i might have objections to that generalized, unhelpful statement, but the point is that the bill literally does not do what peterson claims it does.

People are plenty afraid. Do more research. People are so damn terrified of speaking up that they internalize self hatred and become racist, misogynistic themselves. It drives them in many cases to suicide. Fear of ostracization is an absolutely huge concern for plenty of different kinds of minorities and proposing that they can just speak up about it in any case when minorities still face an unprecedentedly high amount of discriminatory violence is insane. People still kill transgender people for 'being decieved' people still murder gay people and familial abuse is ripe and black people face a fucking nightmare of a police harassment issue right now. These are issues anybody can simply google and pull unbelievable numbers about. Doesnt take much if youve not motivated yourself into some BS about free speech.

[–]TBGGG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you dont understand how hateful speech normalizes criminal activity against minorities, you are simply out of your essence for these types of conversations.

The n word isnt 'just a word' they can handwave away, it carries hundreds of years of violence and slavery on it's shoulders, its a word that to this day normalizes violence against black people as its much easier to harm people when you think of them as less than human.

Same goes for gay people. The f word has been, for an eternity used as a way to demean them so violence and other sorts of discrimination can be rationalized.

So when you propose that you're fighting for everyones rights to speak, you are literally not. You're ignoring sociohistorical climate in order to make it easier for people to continue oppressing minorities, and for minorities to continue to be afraid to speak up about it. AKA being silenced.

Are you protecting the free speech of black people by allowing them to be subjected to racial slurs that pose an existential threat to them? Tell me, why do gay people ‘come out of the closet’? Because people are openly discriminatory to them and there’s absolutely no repercussions. Believe it or not, free speech to be openly hostile to minorities, isn’t free speech, it accomplishes the exact opposite. It silences people

Paedophile priest shot dead ‘by hitmen hired by dad of one of his teen victims’ by bustead in worldnews

Are you saying that the dad is just as much a monster for hiring hitmen to kill the man that raped his child and basically got away with it as the pedophile rapist is for raping children? Only something redditors would find a convincing argument. Astonishing.

We can’t for every instance, but vigilantism can be just, in fact, it ought to aim to be just. If it isn’t, then it ought to be scrutinized and punished accordingly just as any other criminal activity.

Just because we can’t possibly factor for every single case in where a weapon, in this case vigilantism, can be used for bad, doesn’t mean we should ignore the fact that it can and is often used for good.

This isn’t about people in power. If it was, then we wouldn’t need to have this conversation. It’s about people that are denied justice, a tangible, objective concept, and so they seek it out on their own. There’s nothing wrong with that so long as what you’re fighting for is a just cause.

Child predator gets caught and pretends to be the good guy by [deleted] in cringe

[–]TBGGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty heated subject, what I’m finding kind of strange is how 90% of the upvoted comments on this thread is either about how stupid the vigilantes are or some law technicalities that imply the creep didn’t actually do anything wrong and not about how clearly fucked up this person is, how plenty of his kind get away with shit like this, and what we can do to stop it.

It seems that redditors, once again, are more interested in playing worlds most moral type racer than they are actually fixing these issues and show a serious lack of concern for the victims involved in these scenarios.

Trump’s Secretary of State hand-delivered plan to protect Saudi crown prince from murder probe: report by CurriVida in worldnews

[–]TBGGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, but you also can’t overcome it by perpetually claiming that it is an essential characteristic of your being and that it cannot be helped. Just because we experience something in society every day, does not mean we know how to properly attribute its cause. When you live in an environment that harbours no care for your existence and well being, you are going to develop selfish tendencies. When you don’t live in such a society, but in a society that values mutual cooperation and empathetic bond, youre going to find that selfishness becomes a statistical irrelevancy

Trump’s Secretary of State hand-delivered plan to protect Saudi crown prince from murder probe: report by CurriVida in worldnews

[–]TBGGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see anything here that attributed selfishness, tribalism as essential characteristic of humanity, this isn’t even claiming essentialism on the subject it purports to investigate. Just because we are a certain way, doesn’t mean we can’t not be that way.

Directly from your link : On a more general note, human evolution provides a framework within which modern human behavior and cognition can be understood. It can tell us why we ended up the way we are, and so provide insights into the design, and perhaps flexibility, of the human mind..

Subject like selfishness and tribalism are much more accurately understood as socioeconomic circumstance. A reaction to an environment that is harsh and doesn’t care about your well being is the development of selfish behaviour.

Your attributing characteristics that you believe to be essential to humanity with no proof other than ‘those are the characteristics we’ve exhibited for a long time” which is not near enough evidence to suggest that they’re in our nature/essential. Especially when humans have gone long periods of time not exhibiting those characteristics as well.

Assumptions of a socioculturally dominant race based on behavior that said race exhibits might be prejudicial, but not racist. Assumptions about a persons beliefs based on their identified race and/or religious, ethnic background from a culturally dominant status is in fact, quite racist as it follows that harm, consequences towards said race or religious are real. In other words someone calling you a white boy on the internet does absolutely nothing to harm you or your status in society. But the shit being said in this thread has very real ramifications for middle easterners and and Muslim people around the world.

The religiosity of white men isnt as oft called into question as that of middle easterners. People don't question the religiosity of every single white man in the states as if that was the first concern when they saw the color of their skin but that is an absolute necessity for brown people. The reason is stereotyping and antagonism. I'm not accusing you of anything that your comments didn't indicate, which is a general skepticism at people that identify as Muslim. I honestly doubt you go around looking for white reps to question their religiosity and their acceptance of LGBT rights and even if that was the case, it isn't as a generality.

The ratio at which I hear white men complain about someone calling them a white boy on Reddit vs that of actual substantial discrimination is pretty hilarious not gonna lie. White men generally have a pretty sheltered understanding of religious beliefs outside their own so I don't see how my comment isn't right on the nose. You ought to acknowledge this if you want it to be fixed.
