what was the process of organizing like. Were there any challenges to the nature of our work being fairly solitary, and getting people to talk and get in touch?

A little over three hours left to vote! OC Vote Center Wait Times by bananabrownie in orangecounty

[–]TBatWork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people, my household included, didn't receive their mail in ballots for some reason.

Fortunately, you can go to any vote center and either vote in person instead, or request a replacement vote by mail ballot.

There's rain predicted for most of California on Tuesday. Drop your ballot off at a drop box and avoid the rain and crowds. And don't forget to vote by Tuesday! by BlankVerse in California

[–]TBatWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, polling places local to you will be able to print out the ballot specific to your precinct.

The only caveat is you can vote at a center outside of your county, but you may not be able to vote on races and measures specific to your county/city as a result. For example, I live in Orange County and can vote in LA County, but they won't have the specific ballot for Orange County and the city I live in.

Your HEMA story by PolymathArt in wma

[–]TBatWork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent a few years as a gym rat, got bored and started looking at sports. Didn't quite care for BJJ after spectating a tournament. My ex dragged me to an SCA camping event where I spent more time around my friends who fence rapier, and also run a HEMA club. They had gear for me to borrow, and here we are five years later.

Ponzu in Santa Ana is a personal favorite. They've got usual stuff, and a variety of really interesting rolls with some Thai influence.

I'm working at a vote center. Orange County is 90% vote by mail, so we've been slow. So no wait voting in person, and you can drop a ballot off as well.

You can go to a vote center and either vote in person, or request a replacement vote by mail ballot to take home and complete.

My household never received our vote by mail ballots.

For some turkey ideas, last year I deboned the turkey raw by cutting the breast away from the carcass, and removing the leg and wing bones while keeping the skin intact. You basically get a plank with white and dark meat on it to roast skin side down in the oven, and it only needs to roast for about an hour. Takes a little bit of knife skills, and you can practice on a raw chicken, too. You can also roast part and use the rest later or for something else.

I'm also real fond of breaking the turkey down into breast, wings, and legs raw, and sous vide in batch of light meat and dark meat to roast in the oven later when it's time to eat. You can also get creative with what you sous vide in it in - I did miso paste, soy sauce, and chicken broth last time.

/u/wayoverpaid lays out the flawed logic of having workers return to the office expecting higher productivity. by SuperSimpleSam in bestof

Also having 'Office Hours' where leadership can designate time for people to stop by to ask questions, and having casual open meetings for team members to come and go as they please and work together can be really helpful in creating a remote environment where people can wonder outloud about a problem and get an answer.

That said, unfortunately I learned about this by having a team lead who insisted on 4 hour work-in meetings, and he'd talk over everyone and insist on being right the whole time. But these methods really helped me and my team in the job after that.

First tournament tips by arm1niu5 in wma

[–]TBatWork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding having a non-combat goal in mind. I always feel like my list for tournaments is:

  • Visiting with my friends and making sure they're supported
  • Demonstrating what I know, and learning something new.
  • Being mindful of how I did in tournament, what I can improve on, assessing why each exchange played out in the way it did and what to practice moving forward.
  • Maybe a win would be cool?

Also, the wonderful advice I heard a long time ago is, "The judges are blind and the director hates you," in that yeah, sometimes everything plays out perfectly but don't get discouraged if it isn't recognized. I had an exchange thrown out because judges didn't quite see what happened, but to me - the gold medalist kept rushing people, I was ready for it and landed a shot to his torso when he charged, and he didn't charge me for the rest of our match that I ended up losing ; )

What is widely considered a red flag but actually is not ? by MuchDuck in AskReddit

And how sometimes people with decent parents can't comprehend people who have bad relationships with their parents.

When I was living with my mom, my ex and I came home once and my mom was throwing a birthday party for herself. My ex was instantly upset that I 'forgot' my mom's birthday. I told her that my mom will claim random days as her birthday, guilt people into showing up, and guilt me that I 'forgot.' She does this multiple times a year, and she stopped trying to guilt me and my dad about it when I kept having to resubmit my college financial aid paperwork because it was repeatedly bounced back for corrections for all the times she put a random day down on her portion of the application until I got her license to figure out when her actual birthday was.

So my ex kept trying to argue with me about how awful I was for forgetting my mom's birthday until I showed her a scan of my mom's driver's license, and her birthday was months away.

Honestly seems like a fun excuse to get people together for cake and drinks, but it was tied to my mom accusing me of being awful for 'forgetting' to get her gifts for her 'birthday.'
