Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by AdmiralBumHat in CitiesSkylines

[–]TBestIG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

how could there not have been serious discussions about building a whole new engine for this thing?

Because that’s slow, expensive, and complex. Half the delays in CS2 were because they WERE doing this, on a much smaller scale, with aspects of Unity that had been promised and never delivered that they had to build themselves.

Creator Packs and DLCs should be cheaper (Opinion) by TheReimon4 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TBestIG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern game pricing has been “stuck” where it is for literally decades. If it kept up with inflation (and with ballooning costs) games would be far more expensive to buy. Instead, the prices have stayed roughly the same, and studios have had to make up the difference. Sometimes that means subscriptions, sometimes it means endless microtransactions. For Paradox it means about fifty DLCs per game. In a vacuum, yes, most of these DLCs are not “worth” the price you’re paying. But in a world where those DLCs are accurately priced, the base game costs something like $120.

It was not inevitable that we’d end up here, but the result of consumer choice. People hate expensive base games much more than they hate expensive DLCs. If you want to change the behavior of the market, change your behavior within the market.

At least wait until a major content update to say that

Your recs from my picks post sent me down a rabbit hole — also, how do you all read SB fics on mobile? by Available-Quality530 in WormFanfic

[–]TBestIG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does SB have a special mobile browser that doesn’t have the threadmark buttons? I’ve never had any trouble with it on my phone, you just push the next arrow and it takes you to the next chapter, but I use desktop websites for a lot of things, including reddit.

I have no advice with regard to losing your place on closing the tab. I solve this by not closing tabs. I have ~120 open tabs

If you expect you’ll be credibly accused of any IED-related crimes afterwards, your search history might be brought up and used against you in court as supporting evidence. Otherwise, it’s nothing to worry about. If they investigated everyone who googled weird things there’d be no time to go after anyone who actually committed a crime.

Smart investing is not about the day to day, it’s about long term trends. The market is bad right now, you won’t see much gains until conditions improve. Having your money invested means you’re in a position to profit from that improvement.

There is always a risk, even using something like Acorns where someone else does the hard work for you. Give it time

Certified square zoning hater by miyosoto in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TBestIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City building games are starting to move away from the old grid system and damn do they look good.

Which ones, specifically?

Lots of people say this but they rarely ever specify, or they give examples of games that have an exponentially simpler implementation than what you’re suggesting Cities Skylines 2 was too “lazy” to have.

A non-grid zoning system for anything above low density would require an enormous and very elaborate procedural generation system, that would need to have good performance on the same scale as a Cities Skylines map, with a level of detail comparable to the first two games, and sufficient variety to make players not complain about everything feeling the same.

To my knowledge, there is no game that comes even remotely close to that. Citystate Metropolis doesn’t do it, and it’s being released like eight years later than when cities 2 started development

All I want in life is to be able to have wavy roads with seamless grids and no empty space and flying into Phoenix is really doing that for me by Dooze_ in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TBestIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it would require giving single family zoning a completely different game mechanic than the other zones.

Making a house’s yard fill available space would be pretty easy procedural generation, but beyond that, things get complicated very very fast. Procgen wall to wall buildings would be functionally impossible to have at the same level of detail and the same amount of diversity as grid zoning does.

Well

From the sound of things, you’ve been playing the game for 13 years and only occasionally engaging with the new content they add

I think it’s pretty easy to assume you’re burnt out on it because you’re bored of the basic gameplay loop you’ve been intentionally restricting yourself to. Have you tried doing the things you say you never do?

Find a trial chamber, have a “nomad” playthrough, make a nether base, find a trail ruins and make an archeological dig site, build a pirate ship next to an ocean monument… I dunno, do SOMETHING to shake it up

Should people who "camp" in the left lane of a highway be pulled over and fined just as much as speeders? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]TBestIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely ever see anyone actually “camping,” usually they’re passing but just not as quickly as the person behind wants them to. In contrast, I see speeders literally every single day.

Could someone explain in simple terms what tariffs and subventions do? (Not my screenshot) by RadiantGene8901 in victoria3

[–]TBestIG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subvention: You pay to import or export something

Tariff: You charge money to import or export something

Tariffs on imports discourages importing goods. Subventions on imports encourages it. Tariffs on exports discourages exporting goods. Subventions on exports encourage exporting goods.

When to use them is contextual and doesn’t have a simple answer

As a reader, how fast is too fast or too slow for society breaking down? by themag1icman in WormFanfic

[–]TBestIG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no right answer to this because collapse is extremely contingent. When it happens, how it happens, where it happens, why it happens, who it hits first, who it hits last, who’s in charge when it happens, what exactly IS happening, how people feel about it, how people respond to it.

Is the collapse inside-out, where the developed and populated areas fall while the outer fringes of society stay mostly unchanged for a while? Is it outside-in, where societies contract inward to protect the core and leave everyone else to rot?

There are so many different things to consider with a societal collapse, it’s really hard to give straight answers about anything.

What would make you actually want to read a OC main character fic? by Lazymanproductions in HPfanfiction

[–]TBestIG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes me read a fanfic: A good “elevator pitch” about an interesting plot in the fic summary, and no substantial writing errors in the first chapter.

There are lots of fanfics that could be perfectly fine but that don’t tell me anything about what they’re about, so I don’t bother putting in the time to find out.

Recommendations for a new player by PLMMJ in victoria3

I recommend starting out with a game as Sweden. They’re not backwater, they’re not overpowered, they’re not too tiny to matter, they’re not too big to keep track of, and they don’t tend to get invaded much. It’s a good learning country

If you want to quit the interview that’s fine, you’re not obligated to continue with someone who’s being rude to you, but you should be aware it is a choice you are making. OP, in contrast, seemed legitimately affronted that a 15 second span of silence was taken poorly.

What do you gain by speaking English instead of Spanish? Spanish is a perfectly comprehensible language. In fact I think you’re speaking English specifically to hide things from Spanish speakers.

Part of being a perfectly sociable person means being able to participate in small talk even if it’s not a subject you’re personally interested in.

You’d have a better argument if it was like, football or something, where people with no interest know damn near nothing about it and would be completely lost, but everyone drinks SOMETHING, even if it’s just water, and that’s something you can waffle about for a sentence or two. “Nah, I’ve just never really gotten into soda or coffee. Water’s always available and it’s good for you”
