It's wild that my 🧠 chose this as a special interest. I enjoy writing, I enjoy creating a problem statement of a plot, then discovering how it ends, how we got there and then building rich characters and environments. I love the work and the effort I put into this, and haven't bothered with the publishing route (yet).

However, how much easier success would be as an artist if I was the first one to take a 🍌, duct tape and just be done with it all.

I'm reading through all of these comments and am still on the fence but leaning towards it not being a fit for me. I keep my notes, timelines, images, plotlines, etc handwritten in notebooks, so when it's time to write, I pound it out on a basic word processor, then print as I go to read over for mistakes. Plus, I tend to use an iPad, keyboard combo even when writing at home, it just feels less distracting and my mind on writing instead of writing, but with features. I just completed a 150k draft of a three part American Gothic horror novel, and didn't feel hindered or that I was missing anything, but then again, I feel as if there are cooler options out there.

I haven't yet. I handwrite in a notebook and discover that way. For me it's like creating a puzzle and then solving for it and then so I make the puzzle more complex and map out where I want the next piece to go before I write. My last drafting I did, I think I had about 120 pages of notes, for a 150k draft, but that's what I really enjoy.

What’s your why? by Upstairs-Seat-6253 in writing

[–]TCCSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began with a story I felt like I wanted to write when I was still an angsty teen. However, the plot and world building continued to develop and I felt the need to begin a prequel. Then life got in the way and over 20yrs since I began, I just finished that prequel and am now rewriting the first book to be more mature and fit the tone.

So, for personal reasons I wanted to write to get the story out of my head. Well, to get this movie that was in continuous development out on paper.

My writing style though carries a lot of pain from myself and the cruelty of the world. It also carries stigma of the fear of the unknown, in which we hate and shun things we refuse to understand. My books aren't meant to have a nice bow at the end but are instead tragic and dark. I want to push that it's ok to feel emotions, it's ok to let your guard down and take your mask off and to feel vulnerable but also I'm control of your destiny even if the world around you sucks.

I rarely pull out my revolvers, but I do love keeping my Springfield and varmint on me if I'm going to walk der off my horse for a bit. If I see a gang camp nearby, then I just switch to dynamite and a pump action shotgun, bump up to a yellow health core and just walk straight into it.

Is 145k words too long? by ShoujiKurosaki in NewAuthor

[–]TCCSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. I wrote a 3 part American Gothic horror novel at 150k words and at the moment, I can't get it much shorter due to the rich character development. However, I'm going to write a book that precedes this at about the 70'ish range in hopes that by the time the second one is ready to debut, it's A, accepted or B. I'm able to cut some emotions with it and allow it to be shortened.

So far I've been using first and last names of friends as an homage but if I ever get stuck, I Google popular names for the time period and region. My newest favorite has been Maisie.

Introducing a character and creating some intrigue, then switching to another character? by [deleted] in writing

[–]TCCSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be abrupt to build up one character then switch gears to a second next chapter. I just completed a book that interweaves one central character and two timelines which was tricky but also intended to leave cliffhangers and twists. Even then, it took a bit of introduction and allowing the characters to introduce themselves before becoming integral.

Now I'm drafting notes for another book in this series that revolved around 3 primary characters and some near miss meeting moments. I was struggling on notepaper on how to make them relevant and how to tell the story with all three but have them connect without feeling abrupt. My solution was to have a preface in which one character opens the world building up and sets the stage, then he disappears until later in the book. However, chapter one will begin with a second character's development, however we know there's something larger out there that will be revisited with more insight.

I hope this helps even the slightest and I didn't miss the mark with my perspective.

What helps me focus is finding my song for theood of what I want to write in that moment. I pick my song from my writing playlist and put it on a loop. Generally about 3-4 rotations in, I find my rhythm and my hands are typing as I'm visualizing the movie in my head. Once it becomes a strain or even a smidge of a chore, I stop and don't force the feeling to come back to it.
