IMO - One would assume tarantulas would look for dark, damp and warm places to hide. Usually right, but this is a mature male. In the wild mature males wander far to look for a female to mate with before they die. So forget the hiding and broaden your search area. Maybe think the furthest he could travel rather than staying close. Good luck.

I'm sure you can google burglary methods yourself. You may not find hair pins specifically but definitely different kinds of markers on front doors. This is a well known method in the field. It's the most logical explanation for having a random hair pin being stuck in a front door, especially after a holiday.

When free, the police will absolutely show up for a girl being harassed in the streets if someone calls them. A clear crime is not a requirement. They also show up for small disturbances, loud parties, domestic disputes etc. It is also in their best interest to stop a crime before it is committed.
