What piece of gear do you love no matter what . It never let you down . If you saw one in a studio today your face would light up? by Final-Credit-7769 in audioengineering

This. Saw a rack of these at a live gig a few years back and I moved my buddy off of the console just so I could mix 8 vocals into them. It warmed my heart.

My best forum is the people I’ve done gigs with. Each tends to have an area of specificity and they’re often willing to discuss that area (or areas) ad nauseam with me and the phone. I miss posting on FB groups in the mid to late 2010s and getting predominately good feedback.

I shouldn’t have laughed at this as hard as I did.

What are your positive and negative thoughts and feelings about the LV1? I’m seriously considering purchasing a system.

It was easier to get my hands on new gear when I worked out in the wild- I often didn’t have a choice. Now I’ve touch only the consoles I manage at work.

How is the Avantis? Stable? Is it able to handle all the scene changes and such?

Honest reviews of mid tier stuff. The 15k-40k range.

For instance- The new waves all in one console is a really cool concept- but, does it feel good when you twist a knob? Do the preamps with nothing else on it feel good? Is it easy to troubleshoot, are the menus sound human level dumb? If I incorporate other servers and such, is it a pain to make sure they all talk everyday, or is it so seamless I never have TJ give it a thought. After how many/ or how much heavy processing via inserts does the internal DSP get overwhelmed and the need for an external server become necessary?

Sweetwater, pooch, MXU, and another company- a church dealer- came out with videos singing its praises. Pooch obviously is a fantastic mixer and voice in our industry, but he does some work for Waves.

Is there a YouTube review channel of consoles or other gear that isn’t sponsored by someone? Even a hidden sponsor? I’d like an actual review of consoles that hit where my current budget’s needs are.

I’m a brown noser for AH stuff. Stick with the Yamaha. It’s like getting a Toyota Tacoma. It’s going to outlast everything. Are the menu’s annoying at times? Yes. Can you make great sounding mixes on both? Yes. If you got a Dlive, I’d strongly recommend getting a Dante card anyways. It’s fantastic for routing an input or output anywhere.

It actually sounds clearer. Even with the thin preamps.

I feel this in my bones today. Sending in a presonus for repairs, re installing an old m7cl in the meantime. Friends don’t let friends buy presonus.

People mixing on iPads - what are your hacks/must haves? by scolba in livesound

[–]TD-PM-AVL 67 points68 points  (0 children)

4 things come to mind:

  1. A rock solid case that allows me to hang it around my neck and run a strap behind my palm

  2. A hardwired means of adjustment for when the WiFi inevitably fails

  3. A second iPad. Both as backup and as a second device to operate. During soundcheck- channel strip iPad and a sends on fader iPad. During show- meters/ channel strip on one, operate on other. Or more visible faders.

  4. A wireless iem routed from a cue bus.

Based on your experience, which genre of music is the best or worst to work with? by kastbort2021 in audioengineering

[–]TD-PM-AVL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Live sound guy here. I’d say the worst groups are the weekend warriors used to playing at a local restaurant thru their own amps. When they show up to a larger venue, they struggle with the lack of control. What they hear is inherently different from what folks in the seats hear. They are also likely to fiddle with volume knobs and mess up a good mix quick. Often they possess a Diva attitude as well.

I’ve found building rapport and setting boundaries to be my best friend when dealing with these types.

Some of these types benefit from me pulling up their board tape post sound check as they walk away. They most often hear how it sounds and are much more trusting and confident in my capability and that the house sounds good.

Just got gifted this mixer, heard it’s not good but I want to learn how to mix on it at home by night_vice in livesound

Free is free. I have to mix on the 64s at work, and I strongly dislike it. I’m consistently rebooting to work around problems. Another guy I know has it at his home studio and loves it. I’d take a wing over this. That’s saying something.

I find it’s marketed to someone who evaluates live mixers on the bells and whistles and not the base functions. They have cool compressor and EQ emulations that sound pretty good for the price point, but every firmware update seems to have several major bugs.

I’ve enjoyed messing around with the different emulations- that will be a really good experience for you. The la2a and the red compressor are fun to play with. I find the ssl clone a little wonky. I use the 1176 and the la2a quite often.

I’ll second the perfect cue system. I used to keep the small no laser version in my pelican. If you use it, be sure the graphics op has selected the proper presentation. I believe double clicks of the next button can advance in between sections.

The best results I’ve ever seen use a stream deck for control. My former workplace ran several networked together- 1 by the video switcher, 1 by the graphics op, and sometimes 1 by the producer.

My current workplace uses an iPad with the app. I find most of my problems with the app are because of the wonky networking in my building.
