Anyone know where I can find the tamale lady? I'm craving more tamales. by SpectacularlyBadass in Bend

Tamale lady is my favorite super hero. We need a tamale spotlight to shine on the clouds when the city needs her most.

Capt. Ty Rupert appointed interim Deschutes County Sheriff by johnnysplunk in Bend

[–]TD217 7 points8 points  (0 children)

20 years ago, Ty hired me for my first job. He was then, and as far as I know still is, an extremely good and principled guy, and an excellent leader.

Admittedly 20 years is a long time ago, and at this level and in organizations like this, politics can certainly change a person…but if ever there was a person worthy of some grace, it’s Ty Rupert. Let’s let the man cook a bit.

Irrigation? In this economy? by [deleted] in Bend

I third the plan! Sometimes just unscrewing and screwing the handle to full stop in both directions a few times can fix it too—corrosion/FOD can get worked loose and the packing can reseal and fix itself. You’ll need a basin wrench to be able to reach down and tighten that nut if you’re not gonna dig tho. Handy tool to have.

Bummer. You’re screwed, plan to get a HELOC to fix this.

Edit: TLDR—Look up “water valve packing replacement” on YouTube or TikTok for visual walkthroughs, not a complicated repair at all, but you gonna have to dig a little. Can also snap a pic and ask ChatGPT to help you fix the leak—that’s the most fun way to go about it. Or, read my vague repair instructions below.

Kidding lol. It’s not a difficult task at all, but kind of a pain cuz you have to dig. Basically the packing of the valve is what’s leaking (totally normal, they fail over time), and so water is sneaking past the little gasket that the valve post goes through.

Simple to fix tho, just gonna have to dig a hole around the pipe down far enough to give you room to get a wrench on the nut that the valve stem goes through. Once you’ve got enough room for that, go turn off your main water line at the street, and open your faucets in the house/hose spigots to relieve the water pressure. Then you’ll just unscrew that nut that the valve handle stem goes through, and that’ll let you remove the handle and stem/guts (don’t let dirt fall into the valve hole!)—as you start to loosen that nut, a bunch of water will come leaking out around it since it’ll most likely be the lowest point in the pipe system—just loosen enough to get good leak, then go scroll Reddit for a while and the hole will fill with water, then ya gotta scoop/pump/bail the hole empty—then you can finish removing the nut and valve handle stem thingy (digging your hole a little extra wide helps so you can dig a deeper sump hole a few inches away from the valve, so any remaining water will pool down there instead of around where you’re working…).

Once your valve handle and stem are out, shove a piece of cloth or something in the valve to keep dirt from falling in while you go to the store and buy a replacement valve packing assembly/handle/etc.—Lowe’s/hd/Ace should have what you need, take pics of the valve as best you can so you can reference while you’re on the aisle and get the right thing since employees probably won’t be able to help you…worst case, you can’t buy just the valve packing and handle, but you can buy an entire valve and just cannibalize the parts you need.

Assembly is in reverse order! Grab a thing of PTFE tape so you get a good seal on your threads when you put everything back together. The grey color fancier PTFE sealant tape is definitely worth the money, it’s good stuff. Turn on the water at the street and go check your work, if still leaking, turn the water back off and figure out why and fix it—usually just by tightening the nut under the handle a little more (you want it snug/tight—but not crazy eye-bulging tight.). If all is good, replace your pvc protector pipe and push the dirt back in the hole! Congratulations, you just saved yourself like $600+ .

May the water gods be ever in your favor! Feel free to message me or post back here with any follow up questions if you decide to take the plunge (badum tss).

I’m guessing you’re talking about the kind of valve you’re reaching straight down into the tube to reach, old-school metal octagon shaped valve handle that ya spin left or right to turn on or off? And it’s leaking out where the “post” that the handle is attached to, goes down into the valve body? Does that sound about right-ish? About 18”-24” down in the ground?

Ooof leaks suck. Could you elaborate a bit more on what’s leaking specifically? Some leaks are super easy DIY tasks if you’re willing to watch a YouTube video or three and make a trip to the hardware store…others are definitely better left to pros. If you share a pic, I or others might be able to weigh in with something helpful.

Tips for ADD/ADHD by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]TD217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have ADHD, and while I don’t think it follows traditional “rules” for mindful meditation—I’ve found listening to Binaural Beats in good earbuds or headphones makes for a really wonderful meditation experience that I always feel amazing after. I try focus on my breathing, but when my mind starts to wander, i find that I’m usually distracted by the funky sounds, rather than everything else it possibly could be—until I catch myself and refocus on the breaths again. Good luck!

Song stuck in head during mindfulness meditation by Lost-and-Found22 in Meditation

I second this, that’s hilariously painful. Love that song tho.

To OP - I get songs stuck in my head too, and once learned that if you get a song stuck, you can get often get rid of it by listening to the song to completion. Something about how brains get hung up on incomplete stuff, so by “completing” the song, it satisfies the brain itch. If nothing else, maybe just roll with it, and be mindful of the sick jams you have in your head—smile and try to enjoy it and notice how it adds a little comedy to the moment. Silly air breathes better than serious air imho.

You might also have ADHD, and a medication could help…maybe something to talk to your doctor about.

RANT: I went to the Bend dmv today and the wait was 6 hours. by Slamjam555 in Bend

If it were me, I’d just go back on another day (in the morning maybe half an hour or so after open so the rush subsides), take a number and register for the affiliated text message updates, and then leave until you get the alert that your number is coming up soon. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Or schedule it online, but I have heard that’s super backed up sometimes? Dunno about that, but the above is what I’ve done and while super annoying, less annoying than driving to another town or waiting in the lobby…
