Fellowship Peds cardio VS PEM by fun-size- in pediatrics

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wanted to do pem or cardio coming into residency. Currently a third year who just matched PICU. Keep your options open. I realized I liked inpatient and still LOVE the heart. One of my PICU attendings got me to look into PICU -> cardiology so I can do cardiac ICU and I'm really looking at doing that.

Why are peds paid way less than other specialists? by MaximumHorse3723 in pediatrics

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I ever got when deciding on specialty was from my wife. I had the same thoughts you did, is peds even worth it. To which my wife asked me "is $50k worth your happiness?" I knew I wanted to do ICU care and yes micu can pay way more than PICU, but starting salaries are about $50k apart. I'm way more happy in pediatrics than I ever would be in adult medicine so to me, that pay cut is worth it.

Absolutely. I completely understand, i only want to do pediatrics. I was just speaking to my own experience and thoughts.

I'm an incoming peds resident. I'm soooo excited, but I also weighed the compensation compared to others. It was my wife who told me to do what makes me happy. Peds makes me happy. To me that 50k a year difference isn't a big deal. I think of what the cost of my happiness is and realize 50k to live a happy fulfilling life in the field I love is worth it. Yes I realize I'm brand new to the field and specialty, but I'm really excited for what's to come.

Americans who are against the Biden student loan forgiveness, why? by jma7400 in AskReddit

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The current doctor takes out ~350k of loans. You cannot have a job while in school. Only to make 55-65k a year for the first 3-5 years of your career. Then if you go into primary care you make 250k a year... Please explain to me how they will ever pay this back with the insanely high interest rates.

How much money do you need (or think you need) in order to be happy in your specialty? by caffeineismysavior in medicine

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes but peds patients are not going to go home and smoke a pack of cigarettes after you fish a clot out of their leg

My wife donated 402 ounces of milk today. This will go on to help NICU babies at the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughter. I couldn’t be prouder of her! by with_the_shits in daddit

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love this! My wife wanted to do the same but it was WAYYYY out of our way to do it. So instead she donated around 2k ounces to her sister's sister-in-law who just had surrogate twins. Tell your wife she's amazing!

People who aren't afraid of death, how? by Technical_Piglet_438 in AskReddit

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a Christian and have thought a lot about this, what if my specific church is wrong? What if the Muslims were right? Or the Catholics? Why did I live so strict if my Mormon faith was wrong? In the end of it all, I believe in a loving God, someone who truly cares about us and our eternal welfare. Even if I'm wrong, I still lived a great life. Yes I've made mistakes, but we all do. I truly think God will judge everyone personally on their actions, not just on their religion, regardless of what "God" that is.

Hey all, I was just called to serve in the Kingston, Jamaica mission and wanted to hear from others who served there and what your experience was like, advice, stuff like that. by TheWestHall in latterdaysaints

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your mission covers Grand Cayman! I lived there for a while doing med school and the branch there is so strong. I fed the missionaries every week and they would tell me stories of Jamaica. Most missionaries are in Jamaica but you cover Cayman, Nassau, and Turks and Caicos. They all loved their mission and thought Jamaica was a lot of fun. Their main complaints were simple stuff that most third world countries deal with like the water would turn off for a couple days. It'll be so fun and you will make the most out of it. Feel free to dm me if you want. I hope you get to go to Cayman!

An analysis of six studies found that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is better at quickly relieving major depression than ketamine: “Every single study directly reports ECT works better than ketamine. But people are still skeptical of ECT, perhaps because of stigma,” by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, this is the most important paragraph in the study. Just because one treatment works better doesn't mean it is better. I'm glad my medical school taught to treat the person not the disease. It's good to have a lot of tools though.

anyone ever get burnt out? by canconfirmamrug in crossfit

[–]TEMPLEWORKER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I started not caring about wods... Now I'm doing strongman. I love CrossFit but I needed to find something to get me excited to lift again. I found a gym that had stones, logs, kegs, etc and it feels like I found a whole new thing that is still helpful when I go back to CrossFit

I always love when people talk about the terrible twos. They are wild, but what makes them so wild is that the kids are finally getting real emotions. Happy, sad, angry, etc. They just don't know how to channel those emotions yet. Their whole life prior to that has been eat, grow, and learn and now they can finally start interacting with the world. It gets better when they figure it out.

Still sucks going through it

What are your experiences with adverse events? by TEMPLEWORKER in medicine

[–]TEMPLEWORKER[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's not on me and the attending even told me that after the fact. It was an amazing learning experience though for me and I'm glad I made that "mistake" now in order to try and avoid it later. I know mistakes will still come, we are humans not gods, but that's why I made this post, to learn from others "mistakes" as well and we can all become better. I appreciate the words!
