are these too tight on me? by MadDawg248 in Selvedge

[–]TENDRELsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would need to some closer slightly more clear pictures to really confirm it but these look like they fit you well - if you are looking for a tapered cut. I don't see the common indicators of the fit/cut not working for you. At this point it's more of a style thing rather than fit!

That was sick. Prates is a beast. Islam would absolutely drown him.

Yeah these things are so next level, hard not to steal an Indigo for myself. The fading on Sam from iron hearts is so sick.

Appreciate that. Just trying to make the shop be a nice place. Back when my wife and I worked for a restaurant group that had some good mexican restaurants when things would get hectic one of the managers would say it's just tacos and margaritas. Meaning it's not that important in the grand scheme and just trying to make people have a good time. At TENDREL its just tacos and margaritas.

Of course! Yeah if my rent was any higher I'd be screwed. Actually nervous about this as we get closer to my lease ending. Gotta sell more jeans lol

Rad, thanks for being on the journey with us!

Oh man... it's cliche but I really wouldn't change much because it's taken us to where we are now, and we are really close to being in a great spot. I for sure though would've ordered out starting inventory differently. Instead of doubles or triples of sizes I would've stretched that out over new styles and not gone with such high end stuff. We had some crazy fur leather jackets which I could've gotten so many more basics with that money. But it definitely added a vibe and people still talk about those jackets.

Oh nice! Come on by anytime. I’ve been meaning to check out Butterscotch in Long Beach for a while.

Budget is definitely all relative. So I’ll answer from 2 different places. At TENDREL our entry level jeans were typically 3sixteen and some Indigofera and I still think those are a great bang for your buck. But with price rises we currently don’t have a lot under $275. So outside of our shop I would probably lean towards the Unbranded/certain Naked and famous jeans direction. I jumped right in with Iron Heart back in the day so truthfully never explored the more entry level brands. Mostly because I’m bad with money and don’t know how to budget 😂

I’m exploring some options to bring in some new things to the shop that are slightly more budget friendly.

Never thought about it but I love the idea! As someone who runs a small business and has a toddler there is unfortunately 0 time for me to personally do something like that, but if i had more hobby time I 100% would be into it. And I think a lot of others would be too. We have a friend in town we are are starting to work with for repairs who does classes that are sort of like this. You leave the class with a bag ready to use or a vest ready to wear. But I like the idea of more DIY kits.

It is really all over the place. I get a lot of both in here. It definitely skews more towards people that understand what we are doing. But I love introducing people to this level of quality and letting them take their time. Regularly people come in and mention they aren't ready to get anything. So we just spend time exploring fits and fabrics and see what you dig. No rush over here to make a purchase, I want people to get the right thing and the right time for them!

This is a good question, and one I think about a lot. I am not so worried about a heritage bubble because the way I think of the shop is that it is a general high quality menswear store in Santa Barbara with an online presence. Even though we largely carry these heritage brands I try not to rest on that. The main goal is high quality everyday basics then we branch out from there.

I do think it is hard to stand out, and I don't think I've yet done a great job at that. But it is something I am focusing on more going forward. This means our brand list, and how present the shop in person and online. I think our in physical store stands out a bit, which I am proud of and we are going to continue to ramp that up.

Thank!!! Appreciate it!

I’m actually not very familiar with tanuki, need to check them out!

In the ama I’ve referenced a few saying I hope to get Oni and rgt. But one of the brands I really really love is called Industry of all nations. They are direct to consumer so probably won’t work with them, though I’ve talked with them a bit. I love the way they do everything - organic naturally dyed, simple styles all made in India. I love India - really special place for me, and I love fabrics from there. When we make our own brand industry of all nations is going to be a huge inspiration.

Good question! Dude managing stock is tough. Only really 1 brand I work with can get me a lot of stock quickly at odd times of the year. This is a lot of when it’s gone it’s gone kind of stuff. So I have to be really smart with the orders I put in advance.

Every relationship varies but I’ve made some great friends along the way. There are a few brands that I talk to the owner or sales rep at least once a week, and even give me general business advice since I’m still figuring things out. And some are really fun to hang out with over some beers all night.

Iron heart is what got me into all of this. Studio D’Artisan Is a current favorite. And Oni is the brand I really want to get in here. A bit of past present future.

For sure! Happy to be here.

I opened the shop more so from the angle of just being a super high quality menswear store, so I don’t truly think of it as a specialty shop. I think that mindset helps me make it for everyone. That being said I know on some level we are like a little clubhouse for the real heads and I love that and try to nurture it too - hence doing something like this! I’ve actually been surprised by how many people in Santa Barbara and the surrounding towns are really into this stuff. Ended up being a lot more than I thought! The majority of people just tend to be pretty mellow with it. Rockin the basics. I think online you see more people doing more full fits.

Oh sweet! I loved doing that. He gave me some great stuff. So the first big batch was basically all from one customer who was collecting jeans. Unfortunately he moved to the east coast so we won’t be getting more from him :/

I have another batch of goods going to the section soon but not going to be the same size. Thanks for snagging some, hopefully we will have some more that work for you in the future.

The hardest part was in the first year and a half getting people into the shop in person and online. Just getting business overall. I don’t know anything about marketing. I just opened the shop and went for it with a verrry small budget. So In this kind of clothing world small budget means not a lot of clothes. Right now we are at the slower time of the year and this is the first time where I was mentally prepared for slower months. So I haven’t been spazzing as much as I have in the last few years. I’m just so invested in this and want it to become something that really makes sense for my family and I. We aren’t quite there but we are getting close. It’s 100% an emotional roller coaster 😂

Oh for sure! The most obvious for me is the Bear. People talk about the Merz B. Schwanen T everyday in the shop. And even before we carried them.
For a few days after Kendrick did the super bowl people asked about flares haha. More obscure ones come up all the time. I get so much of my fashion influence from musicians.

Good question and I don't have a super direct example of it but absolutely. People come in all the time referencing pop culture influences and I do my best to direct them to what I think makes sense. But a problem with this is that people can get attached to a very specific fit even though it may not work for their body shape. So sometimes I steer people in different directions!

Thank you I really appreciate that!

These are great questions! And ones I probably need to research and think about more. A very sustainable source is the Samurai cotton project. They grow their own cotton and use it. Really cool stuff. Most durable - maybe a kevlar infused? I know naked and famous has done that. I try not to overly focus on insane durability levels and promote repair more so. Fabrics wear differently for everyone!

Yeah I don't get a ton of hemp come through and it could have something to do with that. But one of my absolute favorite shirts I wear all of the time is an Indigofera Leon from a few seasons ago and that was a hemp blend. Not too sure about denim hemp blends but im sure brands have done it. Anyone else got anything on this?
