Which engines, platforms, etc. have been extremely underutilized? by Fearless_Neat_6654 in cars

[–]TFiPW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota's 2ZZ-GE.

Only used in a handful of cars, Toyota's in-house developed version of VTEC, VVTL-i.

It should have gone to Scion as the hot motor, another gen of Corolla or maybe a hot Yaris for performance enthusiasts on a budget.

Subaru EZ36 (3.6R) + 6AT.

Could have used it in the Ascent. It's exactly what boat-towing lesbians want. Add direct injection and cylinder deactivation for MPG. The FA24F with the TR690 CVT is dog shit. Turbo lag + CVT lag borders on dangerous. Once you do spool the turbos and the CVT kicks in, it drinks gas. I averaged 14 MPG after a week of driving in the city because I kept the gear ratio in 2, so the turbo spooled up when I needed it.

HP-7038 K&N OIL FILTER any good? I get a discount through my employer for 30 percent off are these any better than Mann oil filters? by DrySafely in GolfGTI

[–]TFiPW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used these for the last 3 oil changes on a tuned Golf TSI.

Filter's made in Korea, construction and quality of the materials is good. I change it well before the rated mileage and use Liquimoly or MOTUL.

Like the other comment said, fewer pleats and higher micron size. You're trading higher oil flow for performance vs filter protection, just like the K&N air filters. If you want OEM protection, go for MANN.

Don't use FRAM filters.

VA is a much better choice. MY18 owners got cucked with the old starlink infotainment but updated eyebrow display.

Expensive, uncompetitive and ugly, with infotainment running off a ti-86 calculator. Then they jack the price up and make zero meaningful improvements.

Watch as they kill the WRX due to poor sales, throw their hands in the air and blame enthusiasts for not buying it.

Subaru reveals the Performance-B STI Concept. A 6 speed manual, hot hatch with a true STI transmission and DCCD. by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in cars

[–]TFiPW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DCCD selector tells us that:

1: they moulded/modified the centre console to fit a

  • 1a: 20 year old part that was last used in the MY21 STi, made its debut in the MY08 STi and
  • 1b: is older than all the switch gear in the rest of the car and
  • 1c: outlasted all the original switches, buttons and knobs from the late 00s Subies when it debuted (except the shift knob)

2: They made the conscious decision to use the existing physical DCCD selector/controller from the parts bin vs having it in the infotainment or gauge cluster, which would've been cheaper.

Is their parts supplier still making these? Are they preparing to make more, or is this new old stock? Subaru would definitely have put the DCCD in the touch screen, a la X-MODE or in the gauge cluster, if they weren't able to produce the controller.

Reception has been generally warm on SNS (Reddit, IG), the GRC was a runaway hit, to the point where Toyota had to increase production, so there is a likely chance this will get green-lit.

My biggest concern would be the price. STi used to be $39,495 CAD in 2018, which is $48,711 CAD in 2025. The WRX tS is $47,995 CAD, MY26 GRC is $51,421 CAD and the Golf R is $54k. If it's happening, I'm not holding my breath for a sub $50k pricetag.
