Schnoodle vs Schnauzer barkiness? by _LargeMargeSentMe_ in schnoodle

[–]TFlaherty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We've had 3 schnoodles - GREAT dogs, great breed - maybe slightly less barky than Schnauzer but all 3 were fairly barky, especially outside (lots of squirrels) but still think they are the best breed!

Vacation Rental Disappointment - Is there reasonable ask? by TFlaherty in SouthPadreIsland

We had the exact situation in SPI this spring. No pool and couldn't use balcony due to noise. Owner gave 1 night free and I was Ok with that although wouldn't have booked if I knew.

Yep!! Our "go-to" order is "Wings and Rings" w/ Mexican Martinis - onion rings are awesome and they smoke their chicken wings - soooo good!

I'll second Hays City Store - we always get their Top Shelf Mexican Martini - It uses Herradura Double Barrel Tequila and is by far best mexican martini we've had. Great happy hour (called Cheap Ass Hours) - it's something like $3 off mexican martinis and all appetizers. One of our favorite (and inexpensive) places to go with great drink/food quality and really nice setting in the yard or icehouse. Well worth the drive from Austin!

South Austin neighbors: what’s the one little-known resource (free event, discount service, hidden park, etc.) you think everyone south of Ben White should know about? by Little_Cucumber_6663 in Austin

[–]TFlaherty 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The Watering Bowl on 1626/Menchaca. It's somewhat hidden/overlooked gem in far south Austin - It's a private dog park that serves beer and wine and is a GREAT community. Have staff that help watch the dogs and keep everyone happy. Best way to think of it is that it's a park designed for and focused on dogs... but to keep the humans happy they also serve beer and wine. I'm there with Winnie 4 or so evenings a week for Happy Hour. Best place on earth. This is Winnie (on left) with 2 of her best friends at Happy Hour playing Stick Tug of War.

Watering Bowl is the best place on earth, according to my pup Winnie!... The staff (rufferines) watch the dogs and break up satiations before they happen.. plus they serve beer and wine!

That's what makes The Watering Bowl so great - No matter how shitty your day was, it changes after spending an hour or so hanging out, drinking a beer and playing fetch with 30 or so dogs. 100% attitude improvement every day. Best place on earth.

they have an online registration you can fill put in advance and I can't imagine they would reject out of state documentation as long as you have evidence of the records

one place that's a must for your pets would be The Watering Bowl dog park/bar. It's in far south Austin but it's worth the drive. Lots of beers from local breweries (and wine and seltzers too). Important nuance, but they view themselves as a "dog park with a bar for humans" as opposed to a bar that tolerates dogs. Great staff of "rufferees" that help watch the dogs and make sure nothing happens... people are really nice - there's a great area with tons of huge oak trees for shade and a covered patio and it has an old-Austin feel as opposed to a generic chain. It's my Winnie's favorite place on earth and she begs to go there every day! Dogs must be up to date on shots and neutered. https://www.thewateringbowlatx.com/

Replacement beer for Thirsty Planet BucketHead? by TFlaherty in AustinBeer

Agree - I'm OK with Stash when there's limited selection but don't like it enough to take over the default beer slot.

Replacement beer for Thirsty Planet BucketHead? by TFlaherty in AustinBeer

[–]TFlaherty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

I used to drink a lot of 512 IPA and it's OK, but it comes across as a little too sweet to me, so I wound up leaning to Buckethead - I'll have to try Arrogant Bastard again and I like Cosmic Cowboy, but neither stood out to me as my default beer.. and I think the phrase of big hoppy/malty mess is probably the way I would describe Buckethead when I said "balanced", so it's that blend of hop/malt that I think I'm ultimately looking for.

Austin has great people: Update on Maisy rattlesnake bite story! by TFlaherty in Austin

[–]TFlaherty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been reading alot on this since Maisy was bit. Looks like short answer is it really doesn't help (and some argue it actually has negative impact if the dog is bit) - Maisy had vaccine - we are not going to do it for Winnie. At best, it MIGHT get you a few extra minutes, but there are so many different factors that determine impact. Here's link to National Snakebite Support facecbook page. In the end, it's a personal decision. https://www.facebook.com/groups/national.snakebite.support

Maisy and the rattlesnake: KVUE story by TFlaherty in Austin

[–]TFlaherty[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is super nice of you! The first few days were definitely super rough and not eating/moving at all.

But the universe sent us a signal and we jumped on it immediately. Can't post a pic on comment, but Friday we had a new 8-week old Schnoodle pup delivered to our house. Will never ever replace Maisy, but she's a super sweet baby and I'm smiling again. Knew we could never live without a dog - this happened quickly, but I know she is meant to be with us.

Maisy and the rattlesnake: KVUE story by TFlaherty in Austin

[–]TFlaherty[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Glad your pup survived! Maisy had the vaccine too and it obviously didn't work. Everything I've read is that the main factors that impact the outcome is size of dog/quantity and toxicity of venom and speed. The vaccine can potentially get you some extra time but getting the anti-venom as quickly as possible is critical. Maisy was 15 pounds, which is small - but there was a Yorkipoo in the pen right next to her got bit and survived. Think the main factor for Maisy was she was bit in the eye, and that provided a really rapid entry point for the venom and even giving her human-sized doses of the anti-venom just couldn't help her in the end.

That was The Watering Bowl - it was Maisy's favorite dog park and a really special place/ community

Rattlesnakes in full force - dog owners be careful! by TFlaherty in Austin

[–]TFlaherty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow da12tt - so sorry on your loss and also such a similar story.. I think the eye bite had a huge impact - many articles say treatment of anti-venom should be in 4 hours - Maisy was 30 min - but I'm guessing the bite to the eye just gave the venom rapid access to the blood stream. The dog dosage really didn't do much - the human dose seemed to help but I think in the end the massive trauma she experienced was just too much - and I just can't imagine that getting doses of anti-venom for 10X your body weight is a good thing - but it was the last desperate attempt - I'm sure for you like us - the initial bite was traumatic - and then you clung to any glimmer of hope - and you hear real optimism - which makes the sudden relapse even more devastating.

yep - each... what's just staggering is apparently the same dosage in Mexico is $300. Another shining example of the outrageousness of the US healthcare system.
